BEST PLACE FOR CHICKEN OR LAMB BIRYANI IN OR AROUND TORONTO?

Best biriyani IMO is Thalapattaku, 3950 Finch rear plaza. Chicken and lamb biriyani only, lineups always for takeout, call first and order food even if eating at one of the six tables. They use special small grained rice from Tamil Nadu which absorbs spices and gravy beautifully. Every chicken also includes an extra homemade tandoori leg which is extremely tasty. Always found biryani rather dry until I went here. About 10.00 an order with spicy hot raita and egg. Their chai is the best I've had since India.

Any indian buffets actually worthwhile?

Best Indian buffet hands down Brar at Islington and Albion, vegetarian and first rate and the Sweet Palace, 1098 Peter Robertson Blvd., Brampton. Only place that satisfies and we live downtown.

Biriyani Heaven

Have been to a new (for me) restaurant at 3850 Finch E called Thalappakattu in the rear of the plaza. Biriyani has not been a great favourite of mine but we have driven there twice from downtown Toronto in the past week as the two dishes they make are fantastic, chicken or lamb biriyani. Small place, only 4 or 5 tables but very busy. Often lineups and we had to call our order in by phone each time. Very moist, spicy interesting flavours with a homemade tandoori drumstick accompanying each order. The best masala chai since being in India. Each dish served with fiery hot red onion and green chile small salad. They use Seeraga Samba Rice, a very small grain type Basmati that soaks up the spice and flavors beautifully. I prefer the chicken biryani as the lamb is a little too fiery for me. The cooking style is Tamil I think (?) and like a chain of southern Indian restaurants called Dindigal Thalappakattu. Fantastic!!!

Honest Weight-Great seafood and lunch

Went to Honest Weight to check it out this week and found a spot selling fresh and smoked seafood as well as serving lunch. Smallish space, 8 tables or so, few seats at the counter. Very knowledgeable staff and great simple cooking. We shared an order of limpet clams, Rockfish sandwich and small red shrimps on hominy grit with greens. Terrific! As was the cappuccino. Bought some clam chowder to take home and some eels in wine, smoked mackerel and barbecued eel. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, can't wait to return. On Dundas at the Junction a block east of Keele on north side.

Surprisingly different food at Forget Me Not Vietnamese Restaurant

Went to Forget Me Not Vietnamese Restaurant with friends and had a wonderful meal. Freshest chicken mango salad ever, spicy pork sesame rolls and a very different pho, spicy but not burning, loads of flavour and full of tender beef. Each of us had pho and shared the other orders. $40.00 for three. Beautiful restaurant, warm friendly service and unusual, beautifully prepared Vietnamese food. 803 Wilson.

Adega Restaurant

Love Adega!! We enjoy eating out and try all kinds of food in Toronto. Adega is a restaurant we come back again and again. The Octopus and the Cataplano?(not sure of the name) but it is a bouillabaisse type dish are both absolutely splendid. Service is discreet and classy, surroundings are comfortable and not ostentatious, prices are fairly moderate. Adega has been around for a long time with good reason.

'Chuan Yu-Home' - Some AWESOME tasting Sichuan food!!

Went yesterday to Chuan Yu for dim sum and really enjoyed it!!

Had the best "green onion pancake" I've ever tasted, filled with a thick layer of chives and then quickly and lightly deep fried. Amazingly good. Handmade noodles in shredded pork and pickle came in a large bowl perfect for sharing-the noodles were chewy and excellent and the broth tasty. The star attraction was the pork dumplings, the best I've tasted outside homemade-juicy and bursting with flavour. We also had a glutinous green dumpling like item filled with very flavourful minced pork. The hot sauce provided was very different from what we normally see as well.

As you mentioned the menu was truly splendid. Great pictures and a menu that we are going back to investigate this weekend with two friends. Service was friendly, efficient and bill was 21.00 before tip. What a great find Charles, thanks so very much. It seems new Chinese food restaurants have been scarce lately.

Korean Dumpling and Noodle House

Four of us were looking for something open New Years' Day in north York and found ourselves in Korean Dumpling and Noodle House, 6068 Yonge St. Small, 8 to 10 tables, home-style restaurant specializing in handmade noodles and dumplings in soups as well as Korean pancake and a few other dishes. The restaurant was crowded with diners mostly eating soups. We ordered two dumpling with noodle soups and two dumpling only soups. Dumplings were large, 3 to 4 times the normal size, one meat, one very interesting veg combo. Broth was wonderful, silky and noodles were different than any I have tasted in other Korean restaurants-kinky, chewy and very delicious. We shared the pancake which was delicious, lots of what I thought was octopus although it may have been small pinkish squid and very fresh veg.

No one spoke English and we felt as though we had stumbled into someone's kitchen. Accompanying small dishes were kimchi (very very fresh), a simple cabbage one and crunchy daikon with spicy sauce. I believe they have a liquor licence but was only able to obtain a print out from their opening day flyer which was all in Korean. I think they are open until 4 A.M.

A very interesting, surprising find and one to which we will return very soon.

Sultan of Samosas new Regent Park location

picked up a dozen mixed veggie boxing day for appetizers. So happy no need to trek out to Vic Park and Eglinton for samosas any longer They were delicious-crispy, great spicing. Been waiting for them to open for months. Worth the wait.

new Chowfind Under the Table in Cabbagetown

Three of us went back again today for lunch. Shaved beef sandwich with Red Pea soup was the so economical special and two of us shared an avocado, chicken, and b.l.t. sandwich with the same wonderful fries. Gotta love this place. We took out two orders of Spaghetti Bolognese for dinner and just finished it for supper. This was so amazingly good - wonderful pasta and the sauce was pure heaven. Thank goodness this place is in our neighbourhood as we can hardly wait to go back.

new Chowfind Under the Table in Cabbagetown

Want to highly recommend a great new restaurant on Parliament St. just south of Wellesley on the west side. Six of us ate there 2 days ago(including a six year and three year old) and enjoyed the food and the restaurant atmosphere greatly.

Adult orders were Ackee and salt fish with Rice and Peas, Meatloaf and Oxtails. Kids had burgers with fries. First of all the owner Kim is so attentive and ready to find a way to make you comfortable and your meal a memorable one. All the entrees were excellent. The ackee and salt fish was wonderful, just the right balance between the slightly creamy texture of the fish and the slight crunch of the peas and rice. The meatloaf was amazing, moist and tender, the standout in my opinion. The oxtails were also great, wonderful flavour.

The kids burgers were just the right size and perfectly done with the best fries I have tasted for a long time. Kids meal prices too.

I was told about the restaurant by a friend who buys their takeout Spaghetti Bolognese and can't get enough of it.

A great meal with excellent food, surprisingly homey atmosphere and was enjoyed by all-especially the two kids!

Can't do better than that I think. Try Under the Table, you'll be glad you did.

Citron

I buy citron every holiday season in Kensington Market from a place on Baldwin Street west of 190 and on the same side of the street. They have it in large containers and it's quite soft and fresh tasting. Right beside the woman who sells all the dried fruit.

Bought what I considered baby turnips, about one to two inches in width, at Loblaws Maple Leaf Gardens shortly before Christmas. They called them Japanese turnips but were like the white turnips in taste.

The Dumpling House on Gerrard

Great addition to Gerrard and Broadview area, east of Broadview half a block, south side, the Dumpling House no relation to Spadina place.

Had both fried and steamed dumplings, very good. Hot sour soup and cumin with lamb was also good. Very affordable. Northeast Chinese food. Nice decor, good service but only one waitress.

Merry Christmas to us all and enjoy the dumplings!
