Trader Joe's Holiday Items - 2011
I didn't get any kind of Thanksgiving meal this year, but was craving stuffing. This weekend I bought the premade stuffing and scalloped potatoes. The stuffing had chicken sausage and sage and was divine!! I will be buying more of that, for sure. It was so tasty and had a good texture.
The potaotes were a little bland to me. Even though they have 4 cheeses, I found it lacking salt and flavor. I added salt, pepper and hot sauce to get some flavor going.
I had a ribeye from The Dollar Tree,
They also now have Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner w/ bleach. That sells for almost $4 in other stores. You better believe I bought 6 bottles.
On the food topic, I get some really great and interesting foods at The Ninety Nine, as we call it. Kraft sour cream, Hormel lunch meat, Kraft string cheese, the list goes on.
Hi, my name is _______ and I'm addicted to ________ .(food only please!)
My name is Jelly and I am addicted to mayo. There is almost nothing I won't put it on. I love them all. Hellman's, Duke's, Japanese mayo...bring it on.
Hi, my name is _______ and I'm addicted to ________ .(food only please!)
Same here. I bought one of those small travel size bottles that you get at the drugstore to hold shampoo. I filled mine with Rooster Sauce and carry it in my purse at all times. That and Tapatio packets.
Recommendation for casual dinner in SF Valley or Hollywood area?
There is some amazing Mexican food near you. I am especially fond of a place on Tampa and Roscoe called Las Calaveras. They make their own tortillas and they are amazing!!

Chipotle steps in it again
I have been eating the veg bowl at Chipotle for years. It's the only thing I order. I ask for pinto beans. Without fail, every single time, the employee tells me that the pinto beans have pork in it. So, I don't get why you think this info was being withheld. And this happens at multiple locations.
And can't you taste the pork in the pinto beans? I sure can, and that's why I prefer them over black beans.
What does all this have to do with ShopHouse?
Teh Dorito Taco!?
And....you just killed it for me. I had a spectacular underage drinking incident years ago involving Cool Ranch Doritos and Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill wine. To this day, just the smell of Cool Ranch makes me queasy.
Teh Dorito Taco!?
Will I be voted off the island if I tell you all that I want to eat my body weight in those?
I am powerless against the Dorito. It's a sickness.
Denny's Jumps the Shark
Honestly, I am a little disappointed in them. They should have gone all out and battered and deep fried that bad boy. And drizzled cheese sauce over that. THEN I would be impressed.
Chowtastic Recs for Tarzana/Reseda
Las Calaveras on Tampa/Roscoe is excellent Mexican food. Their fried corn quesadilla is perfect. Not too cheesy, but just enough. And they make their own tortillas. It is a sit down restaurant, but not at all expensive. Very affordable, actually, especially given the quality.

great tostada
Also, the family just opened another restaurant on Reseda Blvd called Senor Sol. Same great food, and tostadas.
Chipotle....What's Good Here?
Chipotle has a lot of haters on this board, so I am sure they will pipe up soon. So I wanted to post before that happens.
But I really like the place. It's not Mexican food by any stretch, but just a good, solid "Americanized" version.
That said, I get the bowl. Those tortillas have an insane amount of calories and not much flavor. I get the rice, pinto beans (that's key because they are cooked in pork and you can totally taste it.), roasted corn salsa, cheese, sour cream and guacamole.
If I feel like eating meat, I get the chicken. But that's rare.
The roasted corn salsa is amazing and that flavor combined with the porkiness of the beans is what keeps me coming back.
THRIFTY ICE CREAM (still kickin' at RITE AID)
The Rite Aid on Saticoy between Balboa and White Oak still has the half gallons. I recently got a hankering for it, and I hadn't had it for about 20 years. The Black Cherry still tastes exactly as I remembered it and had huge cherries in it.

My favorite nachos in Los Angeles are at (wait for it) ... Tinga! And yours?
I LOVE Salsa & Beer's nachos. I get it to go and they fill that box up. They use their usual, awesome chips and all the toppings are good. And they use real cheese, not the glowing neon cheez goop. It's one of my fave comfort food dinners.

The dream has died
I recently went in search of a childhood taste memory and was delighted to find that it tasted exactly as I remembered it.
It was Thrifty brand ice cream in the black cherry flavor. My grandfather used to take my brother and me there every Sunday and buy us a cone. I almost always chose black cherry. I was missing him bad a few weeks ago and got to thinking about the ice cream. Went and bought some and was very happy to discover that it still tastes like love.
Mexican (especially huevos rancheros) or Dim Sum off 101 between Burbank and Thousand Oaks?
For Mexican food, if you take the Reseda Blvd exit, you can get to Melody's or Las Fuentes. They are owned by the same people, and the food is the same. Las Fuentes is just a little bigger and has more tables.

Chick Fil A Coming to Northridge!
Someone mentioned in another thread that it is opening in the Costco block. Right across the street from Marie Callender's, I think.
Chick Fil A Coming to Northridge!
Tampa Ave is becoming quite the little food hub for me. It already has Las Calaveras and Tampa Garden Chinese Delight. Now we will have this and 5 Guys, which I am excited to finally be able to try.
I have had CFA in TX and MS, and enjoyed it for what it is. A decent fast food chicken sandwich and fries. It will be nice to have a new option when I am out running errands on Saturdays and need a quick meal.

Do you like cold french fries?
I used to work with a woman who ate the butter packets from McDonald's. She would order a biscuit w/ extra butter and eat about 5 or 6 of those packets in one sitting. It was like watching a horror movie.
Guilty Pleasures - Foods you shouldn't eat, but eat them anyways
I, too, am powerless over the CCF at the Hat. The only upside is that they are only edible for the first 30 minutes or so. After that, they harden into a bizarre, inedible mass. And they DO NOT reheat well at home.
So, I eat what I can in those 20-25 minutes and toss the rest. And then feel virtuous because I "didn't eat them all."
Question about Hot Dog on a Stick
Cheese = Dairy = Calcium = Strong bones
I can justify any and all junk food consumption. It's my calling.
Question about Hot Dog on a Stick
I don't have any inside track info, but it might be for health reasons. They alos offer a lot of sugar free lemonade. Plus, if I recall, they are based totally here in SoCal, right? If that's the case, there is a lot more requests for healthier items here than there is in the South, for example. (And please don't anyone jump on me for that. I have been to a lot of places all over the South and am just using that as an example of a place where "Gardenburger" appears to be a foreign concept.)
Just my thoughts.
Capri Eagle Rock-post Kitchen Nightmares
It was so uncomfortable to watch. I love trainwreck tv, but this was unsettling. I grew up in that area and we never ate there. It was just always known to have icky food. We went to Julio's. That being said, I hope this revamp turns things around for them. It would be great to see them become successful.
And the fact that it is my brother's fave restaurant is enough for me to know that I never wanted to set foot in there. I really don't understand how he and I are related.
Least healthy store bought product
Sometimes I like to terrify myself by reading the nutritional info on the Hungry Man frozen dinners. It's like a mini horror movie for me.
Fast Food Fries That Actually Taste Good?
Del Taco has the best, IMO. they are krinkle cut and when they are fresh out of the fryer, they are heaven.
i do not like the new Wendy's fry. i have tried it twice and it is just so bad.
Wonderful food in places off Chowhound radar? Lynwood, for example.
The chicken flautas at Sabrosos are great! The chicken is never dry and it is mixed with a little bit green chili for flavor. They are fried very well and not greasy. It is one of my go-to meals when I am out and running errands on a
Saturday.
Their chips are very meh, though. I wish they were better and worthy of their salsas. They taste like bagged chips that are just slightly warmed. If they had better better chips, I would be there a lot more often.
Wonderful food in places off Chowhound radar? Lynwood, for example.
It has been awhile since I have had one, since my mom snatches it out of my hands as soon as I walk thru the door, but if memory serves... the meat tastes like a very well mixed combo of beef and maybe sausage, based on the fennel taste that comes thru. The meatballs are huge, but not at all dry. The ball is uniformly moist and tasty. Mom loves a meatball sub and this is her all time fave, for whatever that is worth.
I usually get myself the cappicola sub, because, omg, spiced pork. Everything I have gotten there has been A+. The lasagna is a touch watery if you get it to go, but I can drain it easily enough and enjoy it reheated at home.
Seeking Quality Prepared Foods for Soft Foods Diet
The Ralph's/Kroger in house brand of refried beans are mashed very thoroughly and could easily be considered a soft food.
In the meat section, they sell tubs of premade mashed potatoes that are good. I think it's from Country Crock, but am not 100% sure. But it is with the tubs of pulled pork, rice casserole, mac and cheese, etc...
