Best prime rib?
Mancinis doesn't offer prime rib. Kozlak's in Shorview is another option though.

NYC Hound looking for what MSP does better
I can remember going to Boca Chica back in the 70s thinking I would get some "authentic" Mexican after returning from spending 6 months in Mexico. I thought it was bad back then. I actually think Taco Bell is as good as the Boca Chica food I remember.
Soul Daddy
They just pulled the plug on Soul Daddy. http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/taste/blogs/124736829.html
Twin Cities best onion rings?
Mannings on Como Ave in SE Mpls. Their burgers are good, too.
Restaurants in Grand Marais [Moved from Minneapolis-St. Paul Board]
I agree that the New Scenic Cafe is excellent. We tried to stop at the Rustic Cafe for breakfast around 9:30 am, but they weren't open yet. It seems they sometimes operate by their own timing because their web site says they open at 8am.

Restaurants in Grand Marais [Moved from Minneapolis-St. Paul Board]
I was in Grand Marais last month. The Crooked Spoon was terrific and Chez Jude was nothing special food-wise or service-wise. I'd try the Angry Trout before returning to Chez Jude, and I'd return to the Crooked Spoon in a heartbeat.

Kadejan's website says their chickens are free range, but grain fed.

Eat Wild is a web site that lists farms that raise pastured animals. Besides a listing of all qualifying farms in Minnesota, there is a link for farms that will ship products as well.

Better or OK Chinese Lunch in Bloomington/Richfield
Thanks. I prefer Szechuan, but a friend is coming from Brainerd and wants some good American Chinese for lunch.
Better or OK Chinese Lunch in Bloomington/Richfield
What are some of the best Chinese restaurants for lunches in the Bloomington/Richfield area of the Twin Cities - preferably leaning toward the east side. I haven't seen any recent posts on the question, so would like input.
How is Jun Bo for lunch? How about Mandarin Kitchen? Others?

MSP - House of Coates: Coates, MN
From everything I've heard, they're homemade. I'm not sure the type of batter - it's like a beer batter/could be a beer batter - they're not breaded. The onions are soft and piping hot when they get to the table. They're also not cut really thick.

If you're looking for something closer within the Cities, Mannings on Como Ave. in southeast Mpls serves good, hand-formed burgers and good battered onion rings.
No Mas - Jfood gives up on Chinese in MSP
I think House of Wong in Roseville is very similar to what the Nankin was. Egg Fu Yung, Chow Mein, etc. It's still drawing large numbers of older customers, and I'm sure that's because it is "safe" ethnic for many Minnesotans.

MSP--- Big Daddy's this Weekend...?
With out-of-town family passing through on their way home, I decided on Big Daddy's BBQ and Mississippi Market's salads for a meal. I was shocked when we got to Big Daddy's that their last day at their location is October 18th - ONLY TWO WEEKENDS LEFT!!!!
St. Paul, is going to need extra help for the wonderful, small, family owned businesses to survive 5 YEARS of lightrail building. Big Daddy's is looking for a "short term" lease to use in the duration, but they are also worried about how many families will be wiped out due to construction etc.
This is kind of a plea to all to head to University Ave. in St. Paul and show solidarity and loyalty to those wonderful restaurants that operate along the way (and may I add - at your best price point for quality!!!!)
If you have NEVER had Big Daddy's before, it's smoked and grilled without sauce, and the sauce is added later. I'm not a connoisseur, and I never made the bbq tasting put on by the MSP group a couple years ago, but I LOVE Big Daddy's and so does my family and all I introduce it to!!
We considered Brasa for "SIDES", but knew the salt content was way too much for two of the eaters. So, instead, we just drove up Dale St . and pulled into Mississippi Market and picked up a couple salads and a squash. All three items, the portobello pasta bowtie salad was as good as the quinoa salad - and the butternut squash (we baked whole ) were all great!!!
Brasa on Grand in St.Paul is GREAT!! But...more importantly, University Ave is in need of visits and focus. I encourage others to visit Big Daddy's in the next two weeks, and I encourage EVERYONE to visit Little Schezhuan, Saigon, Ngon, just to name three....but there are many, many, many more that will die if not noted and frequented!!
The bad thing is....they "SAY" they'll do it in sections, but apparently, there are massive utility issues that will impact all, at the same time, for updates to be installed.
Local/Regional Flavor - MSP
For me, Ngon works wonders! However, this is for a bunch of people from different parts of the country - and there is a desire to promote cuisine from Minnesota - think wild rice soup, (good) walley, and since it's the middle of September, maybe some local squash ravioli?...Any "LOCAL" sourcing place that comes to mind for anyone that can produce for a crowd or 30-50??? (I originally suggest the State Fair, but that is not an option.)
MSP-Entree salad?
I love salads all year long. I have never found the perfect cobb, but I think babaoriley was right in his suggestion to try Bun (vietnamese salads - Saigon on University has great ones without cilantro, but with mint). Another thing to try at Saigon is the grilled pork spring roll - wonderful! (and in the winter, you can't go wrong with their pho!)
Another place that is not a chain, but is within a chain, is the Greek salad at the Split Rock Grille in the Raddison (water park) hotel by the airport. They serve it either full or as a starter - I usually get the starter version with a cup of wild rice chicken soup.
They make it with a light vinagrette-type dressing. It's got mixed greens - spring, romaine etc., usually grape tomatoes, black olives, feta, shaved carrots and beets, and I forget all else right now...I like it so much I don't remember all the good things about it.
They also make a good chicken pizza there.
Jfood Initial Feedback on Ice Cream (MSP)
I agree with mngal - don't forget Grand Ole Creamery. My sis and I did a taste test a couple years ago and we like Grand Ole Creamery over Izzy's - firm decision, but can't remember the details. Personally, I think it is more like the Punch Pizza vs. Pizza Nea argument, and comes down to personal choice. At the same time, it's really worth a stop, I think.
Local/Regional Flavor - MSP
I need some suggestions. If you were going to host a group of 30-50 people from all over the country and wanted to host a meal at some restaurant in either St. Paul or Mpls that was reasonably priced and paid for by attendees for "per diem" meal budgets for a typical conference (I'm guessing in the $25-35 range w/o drinks), where would you suggest if you wanted to show them some Minnesota/Regional flavor? If you list some that are higher in cost, please include the higher estimates.
Also welcome are suggestions where conference per diem allotments would cover a meal, but there are only a few things on the menu that could be suggested to attendees as truly regional, and list the items you'd order.
Thanks in advance for any input.
MSP - Day Old Bread - Organic??
I "could" do that, but it would be cheaper for me to start up a double batch of "no-knead" bread now, and bake it, dry it, and use that.
I'm simply looking for an outlet that sells day-old organic bread for cheaper prices.
MSP - Day Old Bread - Organic??
I want to make dressing/stuffing from scratch since all the commercial stuff has GM soy lecithin, high fructose corn syrup, and/or other unwanted stuff in it, yet I don't want to pay $3 for a 12 oz. bag for commercial "organic" stuffing either. If I can find a source of day-old organic bread I can use to make my own stuffing/dressing, that would be great. I simply can't see myself baking up batches of bread just to let good, freshly made bread go to waste for stuffing/dressing - yet. However, if there are no good "go-to's", I'll use my quick, no-knead recipes, and maybe chip in a "regular" one to boot.
All I really want is a decent supplier of day-old organic bread that I can use. Is there such a place in town? HELP!!!
