Laguna Beach Recommendations - Healthy Eating

Glad I could help you out. Hope he enjoys the gift card!!

chapter one in santa ana ?

Thought the food wasn't that great at Chapter One nor was it bad. I did like the space and the drinks. Also enjoyed the desserts there too.

Laguna Beach Recommendations - Healthy Eating

Not in Laguna Beach but True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach which is a short drive over might work. Zinc Cafe in both Laguna Beach and Corona Del Mar is a vegetarian cafe. Happy birthday to your vegetarian and hipster brother.

Sitting at the Sushi Bar - Question

My wife loves sushi. I don't eat seafood. I don't know if there is any actual etiquette but I would think most places would prefer you to sit at a table if both parties are not going to order sushi from the itamae. You are taking up valuable real estate at the sushi bar if you aren't planning to actually order sushi.

I feel bad for my wife though because often times when sitting at the table you get your omakase on a platter instead of piece by piece at the sushi bar. Although there are some places that do piece by piece even when sitting at a table.

Doesn't hurt to ask the restaurant anyways.

Restaurant suggestions for SF weekend 1/27 - 1/29

tomotsu - Thanks for the rec on the raviolo filled with egg yolk. Sounds like pure richness. Will definitely get some bread with that. Funny you mentioned the pork chop, I was already eyeing it on the menu.

Robert - We might just have to order a pizza just to try it out. Thanks!

Awesome!! I love a good gnocchi. Thanks!

Made reservations to Cotogna and NOPA.

Any must order items?

Thanks to all who helped with input. I will report back when I get a chance.

That was going to be my next question. Thanks for the answer. So the main differences are the food is simpler and ambiance more casual? Prices seem to be a tad cheaper at Barbacco too.

Which one would you guys choose?

Civil Bear - Nopa was on my list of places to go too. Thanks for the reinforcement.

Jim - I will check out the menu. Thanks!

Decisions. Decisions. So many places to eat with so little time.

Restaurant suggestions for SF weekend 1/27 - 1/29

bbulkow - I would love to do all of those you mentioned. A bit out of budget for the group we are going with on this trip. Looking for entrees in the high teens to mid 20's. Dying to try out the Chef's table at Saison.

I have been wanting to go to Plum or Camino and check out some Oakland restaurants too. Could be a possibility, but was looking to stay in SF.

lexdevil - Kim was at a restaurant in Sausalito before that right?

Restaurant suggestions for SF weekend 1/27 - 1/29

Wolfe - Thanks for the rec but Bix looks a little more old school SF than what I was looking for.
Like the style of foreign cinema, bar tartine, range, and bar crudo to give you some examples.
But like I said food more important that ambiance, but both would be nice.

Restaurant suggestions for SF weekend 1/27 - 1/29

mdg - La Ciccia has been on my go to list for quite some time since reading all the great reviews here, but we will be saving that for another trip. Thanks for the rec though.

Robert - Haven't been to Cotogna or Barbacco. I was considering those as well.

Looking for a restaurant with a cool SF style for lack of better words. We are a mix of early 30's and early 40's. Food is more important though.

Restaurant suggestions for SF weekend 1/27 - 1/29

Hi SF'ers,

LA / OC'ers Heading back up to SF again for our annual trip with some friends, late January 1/27 for two nights. I am looking for a few suggestions for dinner for Friday and Saturday night.

The wife and I go to SF annually and have over the years have tried many of fantastic dining destinations that SF has to offer. Zuni Cafe, Aziza, Bar Tartine, Slanted Door, Flour + Water, SPQR, A16, Bar Crudo, Commonwealth, Foreign Cinema, Range, Delfina, Canteen, and a few others.

We are all fairly adventurous eaters and open to mostly any cuisine. Although we are not looking for Asian cuisine. Asian influenced is fine though. Not looking for restaurants in the $$$$ range, more like $$ to $$$ which to me means entrees in the high teens to $20's.

Saw an article on SF Eater about new restaurants and was intrigued by a few of them. What are you thoughts on these Parellel37 and AQ Restaurant? The article mentioned that Bar Tartine has been re-invented as well. Last time we went we enjoyed it but didn't love it.

Any other recommendations?

We will be at the Ferry Market building on Saturday morning and the Tomales Bay Oyster Farm in the afternoon. Tartine Bakery our favorite Sunday morning before going home spot.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Visiting San Francisco in December

Since you are planning to go to Bi - Rite on 18th Street and looking for a food street, I would say the block on 18th between Guerrero and Dolores is a food street. You have Tartine Bakery (a must visit on every SF trip for me), Delfina, and Delfina Pizzeria and Bi - Rite.

Mexican in Orange County

Not the most appetizing picture, but I am sure it's delicious!!

Mexican in Orange County

OC Weekly fairly recently did a 10 best tacos spot article.

Might help with what you are looking for.

http://blogs.ocweekly.com/stickaforkinit/2011/10/10_great_tacos_in_orange_count.php

Of the list I have been to Taqueria Zamora and Alibrije's (this is a semi-permanent food truck and not a restaurant). Both places make their tacos with handmade tortillas.

need to hire a food truck for a party

Burnt Truck from Orange County has some of the best sliders in my opinion. They only do sliders.
A few of their sliders include the Fried Chicken Slider, Cheeseburger, Sloppy Joe, Pork Belly, Spam and Egg slider, Meatball, PB&J, Vietnamese Pork, and a bunch more on rotation.

Check them out on Yelp.

Bold Flavors in OC

How about Anqi? More specifically the molecular menu. Priced at $160.

Maybe the textures and taste will be something that might be appealing to you. The menu looks very interesting. Worth checking it out.

I have never eaten there myself but read positive things about it. You could even email the chef and let him know of your current aversion to carbs and spicy food.

Bold Flavors in OC

Mil Jugos is indeed delicious. I think the aji sauce will be way to spicy for ocshooter. He is looking for bold flavors but with minimal spice and no starchy carbs.

If you have enjoyed Tabu in the past, I would say go with the tried and true and stick with it. +3 on the Marche Moderne recommendation.

Have you thought about contacting the restaurants that you are most fond of and ask them to possibly create a few dishes for you. I am sure a few chefs would welcome the challenge.

1 Night in SF - Restaurant that can't be missed? Looking for a different experience... Any $$$

Benu would fit what you are looking for. Minus the SF institution part.

Asian, modern, fusion, and French (kind of). Chef was chef de cuisine at The French Laundry.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

thes007 - Great video! Thanks for sharing.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

Thanks again Cowboyardee and Chemicalkinetics with the clarification and thoughts on those knives. You guys are awesome!!

Japanese knife question - Rusting

Hi Chemical - I just purchased the two Victorinox knives that you recommended. The paring and the serrated edge knife.

What are you thoughts on the Tojiro Gyuto and the JCK that you recommended? Would you highly recommend one over the other? There is about a $25 difference which isn't much, but if the lesser priced knife is equally as good, I might as well go with that one.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

I am definitely going to keep this knife. Special gift from great friends.

Thanks for the links to the messermeister knives. They do look nice as well.

Decisions...decisions...

Thanks again for all your valuable help.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

I think I would use the chefs knife about 90% of the time, so it makes more sense for me at the moment to get an inexpensive paring knife and inexpensive serrated bread knife and buy a higher quality chefs knife. My wife could use one of them. She isn't terribly comfortable with the somewhat higher maintenance with the current santoku knife.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

Awesome investigative work. I was trying to find the box that it came in and that is exactly who the maker of the knife is. I am thoroughly impressed. That is on some Magnum PI level stuff right there.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

I see. Thanks. Learn something new everyday.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

chemicalkinetics - Thank you again for your valuable advice on knives. I will look into those.

What makes my particular knife a santoku? I always thougth santoku's were the the knives with the gills or slits on the side.

Japanese knife question - Rusting

I was wondering if you all would help me with a few other knife choices. I didn't want to start another knife thread.

I am looking to get another chefs knife (8" or 10"), pairing knife, and a serrated edge knife.

I have a pretty small budget of about $150 for all three knives. Would any of you be able to recommend a couple of knives that might fit within that budget but are fantastic knives in your opinions?

Thanks again! You all are the best and a great source of information.
