LA Cheap Eats Food Tour--The Aftermath...
I bow to you, Madame or Sir. I would kiss the hem of your garment...especially if it had garlic sauce on it...
Non-casserole entree liked by adults and kids
Thanks to everyone! I think I'll go with the taco party idea; it's the most well-suited to this crowd at the moment.
Your ideas are great, and I'll keep all of them in mind...
Non-casserole entree liked by adults and kids
Thanks for the wonderful ideas! More, please!
I thought about including more details, but there really aren't many that would narrow the field. The dish doesn't need to be prepared ahead; everyone is an omnivore; spicy's out for the children; any type of cuisine is welcome.
You're great, Chowpeople!
Non-casserole entree liked by adults and kids
Hello, 'hounds!
I'd like to make an entree for three adults and two 10-year-old kids. The children are in a "no-casserole" phase now, which I gather means anything in a baking dish served in squares. The adults are all foodies; the kids were too, once upon a time. Now they prefer KFC and McD to just about anything. (Oh, for the days when they knocked back smoked salmon with abandon...)
I'm an adventurous cook, although my skills aren't quite as advanced as I'd like. Ideas, please, from any and all of you lovely people. Thank you!
Visiting from NYC - what's the "best" of the things that aren't great here?
It's certainly true that Cinco de Mayo is treated by some as simply an opportunity to get smashed, but that's not all that happens. Please take a look at this site: http://golosangeles.about.com/od/fairsandfestivals/tp/Cinco-de-Mayo-LA.htm
Of course, there are other sites as well.
I hope you all have a marvelous trip to our lovely city!
Help Me Teach My Cousin How to Cook
Hello! I agree with much that has been said so far, so I won't repeat. May I suggest that she get The Joy of Cooking? A wonderful book; not only for its recipes but for its informative sections. And Barbara Kafka's book The Microwave Gourmet might just get her going in the right direction - also because of its informative bits.
Thought experiment - What is chow worthy classic "Chinese American" food?
Fascinating topic. Please do read Jennifer 8 Lee's book...

Randolph's Smoke House
Let's not forget what the word peri means (not the prefix):
A lovely, graceful person.
How appropriate.
We're eloping! Where should we celebrate, just the two of us.
I was thinking the same thing...
CONGRATULATIONS! MAY YOU HAVE MANY YEARS OF JOY!

Any LA-area Swedish Restaurants?
Don't I wish! (IKEA isn't bad - honest. And it's the only game in town.) But I do wish L.A. could do better. I've always hoped that Samuelsson would open a restaurant here...he'd be welcomed with open arms. (And he's so darn handsome!)
In the meantime...you've gotten some very good recommendations for finding Scandie foods. I go to Olson's not just because it's near me, but because it has great stuff, and because I have a crush on Bertil. (During the height of the Christmas season a few - several! - years ago he asked me out for lunch. I'm still reeling...) You'll find limpa, seven sisters cake, and vetebrod. The first is extraordinary for turkey sandwiches; the second will slay any sane dessert-lover in the house, and the third is just magnificent: a magical combination of sweet and savory. Heaven.
Let's all hope that we get another good Scandinavian resto soon. Gustav Anders is much missed...ah, the gravlax!
Best Pizza in Los Angeles (& surrounding)????!!
I wasn't very impressed by the reviewer either; that's why I described the post as "interesting."
Please, Maven...do write more reports about food in the city...your posts are always marvelous!

What The Heck Is Up With All This "Chipolte" BS?????
When one wants a marinated fish dish and orders poke [pohk] salad, does one receive Southern greens instead?
Musso and Frank dishes.
If this is the Manny you mean, apparently so:

Oh, I wish MF would never change...
Musso and Frank dishes.
True. Perhaps I should have been more clear; there are different captains. The Manuel to whom I referred is most often found at the front door.
Manny Felix retired recently...that must have been heartbreaking for the people who watched his magic tricks...
Is there another Manuel at the bar?
Musso and Frank dishes.
Excellent! I hope you get to meet Manuel, the captain. One of the most gracious men in town.

Grenadine of beef is my all-time favorite there...with creamed spinach on the side. I've eaten that meal there since I was a child. And loved it every time!
Helicopter Tour (proposal)
J.L.! That is magical...
FIDO, what a better, more joyous (and funny) way to propose!
Best to you both from kauma
Donut Summit! Who's going?
Thank you, everyone! I wasn't able to attend, so I'm most grateful for the feedback from those who did.
Maybe next year for me!
