Belmont Greek Festival?

Just back -- another stellar Festival for food, drink & entertainment in Belmont. Begged a taste of DH's gyro (he got it without onions): tzatsiki was insanely delicious. Order it with extra tzat, stat.

To drink: Greek bottled beer, including Mythos Red; retsina, Metaxa & ouzo; greek wines, and 5 American styles of beer on tap.

My lamb chops were great value (x6 big lollipops for $14) and the shortest lines were in the Greek Deli -- near the taverna -- they have the loukounio sausage w/orange rind, big slices of house-made spanakopita, and the melanzanasalata (smoked eggplant dip) w./lots of pita slices or sesame-French bread. Fab to assemble a tray of our favorite food and just soak up the music, dancing, atmosphere on their Plaka (plaza) surrounded by trees. A Labor Day Weekend must.

Worst Sourdough in the Bay Area?

We were a Laraburu and Langendorf family growing up . . . nothing like a true Extra Sour with the perfect crumb. OMG the french toast you could make with a 2-day old loaf . . .

Supermarket loaves are all pretty heinous. I remember thinking (when living in Wash DC and eating a Safeway "San Francisco Sour" batard) that the City of SF should sue. It wasn't bread, it was a sponge. Bleurgh . . . .

Food Festivals? [2010]

The Belmont Greek Festival is going to be huge Labor Day Weekend this year (just mentioned them on another thread) - http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/437472

This is the only place I eat pastitsio . . . and the vibe is great, you can just enjoy your Mythos or retsina outside on the pine tree Plaka and watch the folk dancers, and the performers who can pick up tables & chairs using only their teeth . . .

Belmont Greek Festival?

I just got my free passes from a friend today (Festival is this Labor Day Weekend, 4-6 Sept.) & they're baking and cooking nonstop at the Church all this month. She said the pastitsio-making was a lot of fun, HUGE macaroni and giant bowls of bechamel. It's a large church with lots of members "from the old country" which is why the food rocks!! Can't wait.

Beaujolais Nouveau le 19 nov.?

Thanks for the KLWM reminder. That Sat. event might be a goer with kids (grabbing a brief glass, buying some bottles while there) . . . great newsletter with helpful tidbits . . .

Now leaning towards hitting Beltramo's and Left Bank in that mecca of culture, Menlo Park. LB will have glasses and pitchers of the Gamay plus sozzled pears for dessert. It won't be the City but still fits the bill. Unless any other stellar suggestions?
Thanks so much again.

Beaujolais Nouveau le 19 nov.?

Anyone? RN74 confusingly had their Beaujolais event on 2 Nov (!?) and was hoping for a trendy, smallplates vibe . . .

We're actually mid-Peninsula and have heard that Sofitel also has BN by the glass on the night. Save me from hotel bars! Any suggestions between Palo Alto and the City? Please? TIA.

Beaujolais Nouveau le 19 nov.?

Suggestions please for a charcuterie-fueled fun evening (SF or Peninsula) for this year's BN release. Hectic (RN74, Gitane) or mellow bistro vibe (Cassis) -- where would be good? We plan to hop around for several glasses/side plates.
Oh yeah -- it's also my birthday -- thanks & report to follow !

Best Korean Pancakes (pajeon)?

Loved the seafood pancake last week at "Sun Tofu House" (real name/link below), Palo Alto. DH was lucky to get a piece. Fresh shrimp and tiny oysters; fab dipping sauce & condiments.
