questions about La Jolla for work-related dinner
Ended up at Piatti. Everything was spot on.. Although Piatti ostensible closes at 10, that in fact is the last call for food orders. The liquor license goes until midnight. So we had a good 2+ hours of eating, drinking, and conversing -- and never felt rushed -- even though the restaurant was "closed."
what's new and exciting?
Starlite is always special, like wearing a favorite sweater after you take off the button-down uniform. It's not "new and exciting" but it's always a joy.
Last night's soft shell crabs were remarkably flavorful. Whole pea pods in butter and herbs: simple yet perfectly executed.
We were going to try the new Mission Hills foodie hop -- Starlite for starters; Brooklyn Girl for the entree -- but alas BG was overflowing, with nary a seat at the bar.
questions about La Jolla for work-related dinner
It seems ever more likely that I shall never enjoy the privilege of undergoing the ordeal that is a visit to The Spot.
questions about La Jolla for work-related dinner
Thank you all for the feedback.
It might still be possible to make it to Piatti with my group.
Otherwise, it seems the options are Prospect Bar and Grill, The Spot, or Marrakesh.
I have never had the privilege of stepping into any of these establishments. Opinions? Experiences?
Newbie gardener in San Diego questions
Hi. I just decided to pull out a small side yard and build a garden box 18' x 3' x 2' high in Mission Hills.
Right now have several basic questions
What is the best soil / compost mixture for growing a range of vegetables and herbs? I've looked a little at square foot gardening. It does not interest me in the least. I just want to go to City Farmers Nursery and get some nice soil + additives.
I'm building the box out of redwood. Does it make sense to line it with visqueen in order to preserve the wood?
Are burrowing mammals a problem around here? Do I need to line the bottom with hardware cloth?
I know raccoons are a problem. Any suggestions how to keep them out of the patch?
questions about La Jolla for work-related dinner
Is PF Chang's *that* bad? I've never had a reason to go, but it stays open until 11.
questions about La Jolla for work-related dinner
I almost never eat in La Jolla. Nothing against the restaurants or town, but I dislike the drive. That said, I have to plan a work-related dinner, which in this case means being somewhat cost conscious, not crazy expense account. Entrees in the teens to twenties.
One last piece to the puzzle, dinner will start around 9:30pm.
Instantly I thought of Piatti or possibly Barbarella. But trawling around on Yelp, I also came across Finch Wine Bar and Bernini's Bistro.
Are these latter two restaurants any good? Better than Piatti? Is there anywhere else that I should consider?
seeking loud loud restaurant
I've never even heard of Wang's. Is it related to Wang's in the Desert, in Palm Springs? Not the best food, but food isn't the point.
seeking loud loud restaurant
No. It's for a book I'm writing. I need the feeling of being smothered in a cacophony of human voices.
I'll probably go alone, since I want to sit and experience the soundscape, not contribute to it myself.
seeking loud loud restaurant
I usually avoid loud restaurants, but as an experiment I would like to eat in the loudest room that exists in America's Finest City.
Where should I go?
Desert Hot Springs suggestions sought
Thanks GW. The night was a little too chilly for my wife, but the Dillon Roadhouse looked like a solid place for beer and beer food.
Desert Hot Springs suggestions sought
I now know that there was no reply because there was no possible reply in the affirmative. DHS seems to be a food wasteland. Bring your own cold picnic to eat by the pool, or drive to Palm Springs.
Desert Hot Springs suggestions sought
I'm pretty familiar with PS, but have decided to branch out and stay a couple of nights at the El Morocco in Desert Hot Springs.
Any recommendations for chow-worthy, or at least decent, places for meals. I'm not concerned about price (low or high) or style. I would just like to eat good food without having to drive down to Palm Springs.
Thanx
Sustainable Seafood in SD
Sardines are often available at the La Jolla Whole Foods, but not at the Hillcrest branch.
Top 10 Mexican Spots in SD...
Hey Josh,
A beautiful thing about a personal blog is that the blog's author has an absolute right (within limits of the law) to follow principles and values of his own choosing. Emotion is a normative part of the culinary experience. To judge food in terms of its sentimental evocativeness is not aberrant. Moreover, there is no institutional body or even cultural consensus that specifies just how sentimental one may, or ought to, be when judging food.
Your inability to explain the author's preference for intangibles is an expression of your own imaginative and conceptual limitations, rather than of his aberrant behavior vis-a-vis food blogging.
So, I would guess that the author ranks SeƱor Mango's veggie sandwich above Mariscos El Pescador because, even if the food was not as "good", he enjoyed it more. Damn that's just crazy talk: using emotion to judge an emotional experience.
Local Organic Orange Juice
Whole Foods (in Hillcrest, at least) has bottles of orange juice squeezed daily.
What's new?
Some sort of construction work HAS begun inside the space that is advertised as the future home of Brooklyn Girl. It's not going fast, but building materials ARE being acquired and arrayed.
source of fresh herbs in bulk?
Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm looking for thyme, mint, rosemary, parsley, oregano, marjoram, basil, and chives.
I'll give WF another look, beyond the absurd boxes and take it from there.
source of fresh herbs in bulk?
I'm looking for lots of fresh herbs to make a salad. The little plastic boxes one can buy at Whole Foods or Trader Joes are absurd.
I know Specialty Produce is one possibility. Does North Park Produce have a good selection of herbs? Anywhere else?
fresh lump crab meat in San Diego
I would say the CostCo lump crabmeat is significantly better than the stuff available at Trader Joe's.
TJ's tastes slightly more briny in a bad way and the consistency is more stringy overall. The Costco is flakier and sweeter.
TJ's has the advantage of being a little cheaper ($12 vs. $17 I think) and a lot more convenient (at least for me).
Live Maine Lobster
I assume these are sourced from China or elsewhere in Asia. Truong Phat and 99 Ranch's lobsters are **never ever** as tasty as lobsters brought in from the cold waters of Maine and the east coast of Canada. It's worth paying more (though not $30 / lb more!!)
Busalacchi Speaks
An astute insight that I think gets at a core truth about San Diego, steveprez. It certainly speaks to my own experience. Since moving to SD 15 years ago, from the east coast and midwest, I have become far less interested in food in general, and cooking in particular. The place in my life that food held while I was living in the land of weather has been supplanted by a life lived outdoors year round -- exercising, gardening, and reveling.
Your best favorite eatery for Friday nights after work?
Just got home and was about to post the info for y'all.
Fish fry is Saturday, October 22 @ St. Vincent's Church in Mission Hills (across the street from Masa Izakaya)
Your best favorite eatery for Friday nights after work?
If you want a Friday night fish fry come to Mission Hills. St. Vincent's Church hosts them every once in a while. I think one is coming up soon (hopefully it wasn't last night).

Any old-school Japanese/Japanese-American places?
Yoshino's on Washington Street. I haven't been there in over a decade, but per my memory it would fit the bill perfectly.
What's the best sit-down mexican with margaritas in SD?
Cantina Mayahuel is a great choice, especially on Mondays when margaritas are $5 and the daily special is three street tacos for $5.
