Sweetbreads
I second La Boca. They are prepared simply and grilled with some salt and a squeeze of lemon. They are amazing, appetizer or entree. My other favorite is Galatories, simple lemon beurre blanc sauce with capers...Galatories' version made me fall in love with eating offal.
Looking for the Soul of New Orleans
Thanks Kibbles. That's exactly what I meant. I work downtown and eat out for lunch every day. So yeah, I'd stop by Red Gravy for a deli sandwich on a random Tuesday every now and then, but the place is unremarkable and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a tourist seeking to experience the "soul of New Orleans." Sorry to thread jack.
Looking for the Soul of New Orleans
Had to log on just to agree with you. Littleman must own some of these establishments. Red Gravy is just fine for CBD worker drones but I would never recommend it to a tourist, definitely has nothing to do with New Orleans, same with the Mexican recommendations. Felipe's is great, again for CBD workers, but what tourist hoping to experience NOLA culture/food would go there? And I'm pretty sure Daisy Dukes has a barker, avoid at all costs. Other than that, the other recs are great as well as yours shankefink.
11/11/11..........Big Food Event in NOLA.........Mmmmmmmmmm.....................
So $75 gets you inside and it's additional for booze and boudin after that? I'd like to go, just trying to figure out how much this night might set me back.
Feast closure
I only went once and wished I could have tried it again, but the one experience was a definite miss. That kind of food is definitely in my wheel house but the execution on the day we went for lunch wasn't there. Pork/veal cheeks were swimming in grease and lacked depth. It was served with some root vegetables and some kind of greens. Over salted and again, incredibly greasy....and believe me, I dig greasy food. A friend got the gulf fish and it had a peculiar flavor. I'm sure it was fresh, but it sure didn't taste fresh. Anyway, I wanted to like this place, I really did, but it was a bad experience and I didn't rush to get back. Sad to see it close though.
Tujague's or Audubon Clubhouse Cafe?
I wish the bonn femme had been on the menu we were served. The chicken dish we were given was a total disaster. A quarter of roasted chicken with a side of pasta with cream sauce and the whole thing was topped with potato chips which were scattered with diced raw garlic and parsley. Pretty perplexing combination. Fortunately most of us had been drinking for a few hours and that helped numb the tastebuds (before the raw garlic did it).
Tujague's or Audubon Clubhouse Cafe?
I echo Paisley's suggestions. I also just attended a Tea Room wedding and everyone (all locals) were really impressed with the food.
Tujaques is another story. I recently went there for a Mardi Gras event and was served the menu detailed above. Nearly every man at our table (again, all locals who love the old line creole type food) agreed it was one of the worst dinners they'd ever had. What looked to be frozen shrimp served over shredded lettuce with overpowering remoulade, a chicken entree that was a mess and the brisket was pretty weak too, very bland. The fact that the brisket is their signature dish speaks volumes. Anyway, Tujaque's is a great place to go drink, and the location is great for Quarter activities, but definitely don't go for the food.
Doberge Cakes in New Orleans?
I've had a half chocolate half lemon doberge from Maurice's for my birthday nearly every year of my life....strong supporter of Maurice's work. Gambino's makes a good cake too.
Why the Anti Antoines bias on the forum?
There's another historic restaurant in the FQ and it's a heckava lot better...it's called Galatoire's.
First time to Boucherie
I'm so excited about this place. Great food and fantastic prices...most large plates are under $15. We went two nights ago, Fries, boudin balls, grilled cesar, ribs, flounder, gnocchi...all of it was delicious. They have thier liquor license now but you can still BYO with no corkage fee...I hope they don't change this policy. Anyway, great new place.
Best Vietnamese Dishes in NOLA
Kim Son's salt baked scalops are rad, and Pho Tau Bay's menu, top to bottom is fantastic. From the crispy egg rolls, to the PTB wonton soup, bahn mi, and don't miss the dessert yogurt, made in-house. Just got back from another great lunch at PTB.
Delicious Po Boys Near The Marriott
The Commerce deli is a legit hole in the wall....great po boys. I'd stay away from Serio's, total tourist trap, bad sandwiches.
Bee Sweet Cupcakes
This place is fantastic. Go check it out....A friend brought a dozen over to a Saints watching party...never seen so many beer drinking grown men absolutely freak out over a dessert before. The Fatty Elvis was my fave.
Cochon this weekend
The rabbit livers are the best thing on the menu. Not to be missed.
Two nights in the City
Greetings Chowhounders!
I’m traveling with a small band of New Orleans miscreants up to NYC for two nights in early January and would love some recommendations for dinner. One night we are looking for a nice yet reasonably priced (entrees in the 20’s-low 30’s) joint, maybe European fare. Trattoria/Bistro? Spotted Pig perhaps? The other night we’re looking for the most legit ethnic food experience NY has to offer (we don’t have many ethnic choices down in New Orleans). Thanks so much for your help!!!
Cafe Atchafalaya-the good, the bad and the tasty
Wish I had tried the Pain Perdue. It looked good. Unfortunately, what we did order, didn't impress. My wife had the chopped salad with shrimp, lettuce was wilted, and overall was a bland salad. I had the fried green tomatos with crabmeat. Not fried well, and again, bland. It was swamped with their "Atchafalaya sauce" which was pretty much an overpowering horseradish sauce that really took away from the dish. Nice atmosphere, great service, just didn't enjoy the food. Too many good restaurants in this city to go back.
Anyone serving oyster stew anymore?
Yep, Casamentos does it right. Ate there Friday night: Raws, Oyster Stew, fried crab claws, and fried oyster dinner.....fantastic.
Seriously....Brennans is soooo over-rated!
Marigny Brasserie does a great brunch with some fun music.
Cochon
Cochon is one of my favorite restaurants. I love the oyster roast, beet salad, livers with pepper jelly (either rabbit or chicken), rabbits and dumplings, in addition to those items listed above. They also have great desserts (pineapple upside-down cake for one). Don't miss out on the drink list too...
Cresent City Steakhouse
I went Saturday...had a great time. Make sure to request one of the booths....really adds to the experience. Also, the steaks are massive, feel free to split one.
Oyster Po'boy better than Acme?
I second mikemill's suggestions, Liuzza's by the Track's garlic oyster is not to be missed, one of my favorites.
Bobby Flay and Sirios?
I just started working downtown and have hit Serio's for lunch a few times. I went today and noticed that they are using the Bobby Flay appearance as advertising. Anyway, I'm pretty underwhelmed by this place. Mediocre food and not cheap to boot. Got the shrimp po-boy today. The shrimp resembled sea monkeys more than actual shrimp (i.e. very small). They had obviously been sitting out for some time because they were cold. I wouldn't recommend this place.
Riche Restaurant Closing
That's pretty exciting news. Fitzmorris said Chris' was looking at a St. Charles location the other day on his show, but glad to hear they'll be downtown, it's about time.
Honestly ?
I'll certainly agree with your comments....it's the food, and the menu that bring me back. They also do some of the best tempura I've ever had.
Honestly ?
I'm surprised to see no mention of Shogun on Vets. I've been going there for over 20 years, and it never dissapoints. The atmosphere isn't much to speak of, but no Japanese restaurant in the city has as wide and complex of a menu. The menu boasts items I've never seen at other sushi joints. Grilled yellowtail neck, japanese calamari, very fresh sushi.
I've been to Horinoya several times for luch and agree that it is overpriced, if they are using higher grade/quality fish, I couldn't tell.
Snowballs
For the Metairie-ites out there, Sal's is still DOMINATING the snowball world. All lesser snow-balls cower in fear.....
Taqueros/Coyoacan on St. Charles
This is pretty funny. My mother was at Coyoacan a few months ago and wanted her beef prepared medium, as opposed to medium rare. Once again, this request was denied as it was "not in the chef's vision." We were not pleased.
Commanders post Katrina
Went recently, they're back and stronger than ever. Fantastic service and even better food.
Baru?
We had a rather dissapointing experience at Baru last night. Like the original poster, we were intrigued by the amount of people flocking to this place, so gave it a shot. The service was VERY slow, and we experienced some mix ups with the kitchen. They actually forgot one of our tapas dishes, so we were sitting without food for nearly 45 minutes, however, they removed the item from the bill, which was nice. Our entrees were dissapointing as well. I ordered plantains, which were devoid of taste, served w/ chicken and chorizo, which were a bit bland and overcooked. Its only redeeming quality was a tasty garlic pesto-ish sauce on top. Despite the food, and service, I also had a bit of a problem with the price. Yes, these are true tapas sized portions (as another poster mentioned) so, the 8-12 dollars per dish is a bit steep. I also agree that if a place doesn't have a its liquor license yet, they should waive the corking fee. Not sure if we'll be going back to Baru.
