Recently picked up a Staub 5 qt Cocotte in Basil and yesterday bought an 8 inch Griswold skillet at an antique store for less than $30.

I may have a minor cast iron problem. :P

Ended up getting $42.00 cash back. Annoyed. Ordered the Staub anyway.

I don't have the receipt as it was a gift, but I have the box. Maybe that will count for something.

They give you store credit? Ugh. I was planning on getting a Staub as a replacement. I have a 5.5 qt one with a $109 sticker price. I've got a feeling that I'm gonna get screwed.

Yikes! Thank you so much. I have one of these, I got it as a gift last Christmas. I'll have to find a Macy's to bring it back to.

what are you canning this year?

So far I've done:
a bunch of quarts of whole plum tomatoes
marinated roasted red peppers
a roasted pepper-roasted tomato spread
szechuan green beans
dilly beans
dill pickles
spicy garlic pickles
strawberry jam
blueberry jam
pickled red onions
hot cherry peppers

and I have some tomatoes on the stove that are going to be canned as puree this afternoon. Next week I'm doing crock pot peach butter, quarts of peaches in syrup, peach pickles (I saw the recipe in the ball book and had to try it), spicy pickled beets, some pickled hot peppers and some strawberry jam if the farm by my house has any strawberries left.

I haven't even started think about apples yet :P

Litmus tests: Thai food

+1 on the drunken noodle litmus test. My only problem with that is, that if the drunken noodles are incredible, I'll never try anything else on the menu.

Best vegetarian enchiladas and empanadas recipes?

i am a vegetarian and i love enchiladas and empanadas. My two favourite recipes are both black bean centrc and super easy to make:

http://www.chow.com/recipes/10435-bla... <-- black bean and plantain empanadas. So good!

and

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/he... also delicious. and these simmered beans are great for a myriad of other things.

Indian Restaurants - Snacks - Sweets Oak Tree Road Edison NJ to Iselin NJ

I absolutely love India Palace, the small buffet farther up Oak Tree Road. I've been going there regularly for the last 2+ years, and it is my favourite. I also like Chowpatty and Bombay Talk. It all depends on what you're in the mood for. I'm an edison native and a vegetarian, so I spend a lot of time in Little India. The dosa at Bombay Talk is great, and the Paneer Masala and Dal Makhani at the buffet at India Palace are both worth trying.

Edit to Add: Bombay Talk and Chowpatty are both fast food style restaurants. If you want more civilized dining Moghul, Rasoi or Chowpatty are the places to go

new Hmart in Edison?

I stopped into HMart this afternoon and was beyond pleasantly surprised. it was pretty crowded and there was a mixed crowd -- Asian and Caucasian which can't be said of the other ethnic grocery stores that i frequent.

There were demo stations set up all over the store, as a vegetarian i only tried a few things they were offering, which were all pretty good. One of the oddest demo stations was a woman with a whole pig - bigger than me with hooves and skin still on. It seems they're having a pork fest coming up and that is their promo for it. Their prepared food section was very nice, not too many veggie options, but i didn't really expect that. There was also a woman at a station making fresh kimchi which was impressive. The produce section is also very spacious and everything is very fresh looking. I didn't get too close a look at the meat or seafood sections, as they're not things i eat, but it didn't smell fishy like the Asian Food Center in Piscataway does.

I only picked up a few groceries - some ramen, sone spicy dumplings, some marinated tofu, a bunch of different vegetable and some tea as I was only really there to explore, but I must say I've lived in Edison my whole life and have shopped at AFC and Hong Kong Supermarket before it closed a few years ago, and this new HMart blows them both out of the water.I am very excited about it moving into the neighborhood, and cant wait to go back.

Jalapeno peppers....what to do with a couple extra pounds?

Do you think this recipe could be canned do you think in a hot water bath? I've got the last of my jalapenos, and red peppers in my garden, and i would love to preserve their flavor for the rest of the year, and this sounds spicy and delicious.

Asian Food Markets....Piscataway

The AFC in Pway is great isn't it? I live in the area and go there for produce and asian ingredients that i can't get at the normal supermarket, though i have to say, some of the stuff they carry chills my vegetarian heart :P

I wouldn't worry about it being competition for Kam Man Foods though, as the AFC was open on Rt 27 in Edison for many years, and it simply relocated to Pway a year or so ago.

Location for a Girls Night in Central NJ

Hello hounds,

I am part of a social club of 20-30 y/o women and we are trying to find a location to a have an occasional girls night out in a bar/lounge type establishment in central NJ. Somewhere vegetarian friendly with cocktails (most) for less than $10, and not sports bar-ish is preferred. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Vegans: What do you eat when you're hungover?

i eat pasta when i'm hungover (i drink enough water when i'm drinking on $2 pint night, that hangovers rarely happen). spaghetti with some red sauce or arrabiata sauce tends to hit the spot.

or hash browns with jalapenos like the ones they have at wafflehouse. mmmmm

Moving to NJ - what town(s) have most interesting restaurants and food stores?

I haven't spent too much time in red bank, because theres not much around there that i can afford (im a 21 year old vegan college student, my options are limited sometimes). I know there are a ton of wonderful options around there though, and quite a few threads on this board dedicated to the areas restaurants. Another fun food city near there is Asbury Park.

Edison to Red Bank? its maybe 35 minutes away by car, and you can take the train from woodbridge to red bank.

Moving to NJ - what town(s) have most interesting restaurants and food stores?

Montclair to Edison is a pretty reasonable commute, Edison is a fun food town depending what you're looking for, but they'res not that much in the ways of food towns south of it that i can think of off the top of my head.

vegetarian chowhounds

I've been a vegetarian since I was about twelve years old. I hated the taste and texture of meat so I avoided it as a child unless i could smother in franks red hot, and when I turned eleven or twelve I learned about factory farming and how terrible animals raised for food are treated and the environmental impact of these industries, and I completely stopped eating meat - yes, I was an odd child. I've been a vegetarian and on and off vegan for the past ten years.

Best pasta sauce in a jar?

Cento and Vincents Medium are my absolute favourites in a jar, but I've found myself happily eating Prego sauce over tortellini on a weekday evening when money is tight.

Black Bean and Plantain Empanadas

I made a variation on these last night. I the filling, but used empanada wrappers and fried them. I found it a lot simpler than cutting up puff pastry. They were delicious. I think i might add some kind of hot peppers in them next time just as an experiment.

New Trader Joe's yea/nay thread - 1st quarter 2010 [OLD]

My boyfriend and I both swear by their shampoo and conditioner (the spa one, not the tea tree one), the lemon verbena bar soap and the laundry detergent. I also adore their cream top yogurt, the frozen penne arrabbiata, and the chili spiced dried mango among numerous other things that aren't coming to mind. I know I've had a few 'nays' but none are coming to mind.
