Road trip from Boston to New York, via Rhode Island and Connecticut
Although NYC is famous for its hot dogs, you may want to make a stop at Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield (CT). Great franks, it's right off the highway (I-95), and you can definitely get them "to go." They've been profiled several times on TV, probably most famously on "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Incidentally, they're a stone's throw away from the Fairfield Pepe's.
Savin Rock Roasting Co - Stratford, CT: What's up?
Yep - right on the corner across from Uberti's, next to the new karate studio.
Savin Rock Roasting Co - Stratford, CT: What's up?
Lots of activity around the facility today. There is a liquor permit posted for the "Riverview Bistro" and there was somebody up in a cherrypicker taking the old Savin Rock Roasters sign off the building. In addition, there was a van from a fish market in the lot, and they appeared to be unloading something from it. So - we should have a new dining spot opened soon. In addition, right up the road on Ferry Blvd, "Off the Hook" is having a soft opening this weekend in the old "Presto" pizza spot (with official opening next Thursday).
Savin Rock Roasting Co - Stratford, CT: What's up?
I was thinking the same thing...would LOOOOOVE to see Atlantic Seafood Company take up residence there. There aren't ANY in CT!
Savin Rock Roasting Co - Stratford, CT: What's up?
I don't know what happened, but it's been closed for at least two weeks.
special lunch in New Haven on a Wednesday?
Union League Cafe (not sure if they are open for lunch) or Heirloom at the Study Hotel
casual wear, good food, near Webster arena in Bridgeport,Ct.
It's a bit more upscale, but Ralph and Rich's is within a stone's throw of the arena (right across from the Barnum museum), and has some great Italian (and LOVE the decor!).
New Years Eve ideas?
Bistro Basque right in downtown Milford, or Ola's on the Post Rd in Orange are both great and moderately priced. Plan B Burger in Milford might be towards the lower end of the price range, but the decor is terrific. If you'd be willing to spend a little more, hit the Beach House in Woodmont. Great food and decor. And all four choices won't take you any more than 10 minutes from home! Have fun!!
Burger along Merritt/Rt 15 or I-91 between Norwalk-Hartford?
Maybe only 2 burgers, but they're GREAT burgers.
I order mine medium with bleu cheese on it...DELISH!
Burger along Merritt/Rt 15 or I-91 between Norwalk-Hartford?
The new Sitting Duck Tavern is about 5 minutes off the exit in Stratford (in the heart of Paradise Green), right before you go over the Sikorsky bridge. It's small, cozy and the burgers are great. Saturday or Sunday lunchtime should be relatively quiet there - it's after 5 when they truly get busy!
place to celebrate ocktoberfest in CT - besids Eastside
Reading Roadhouse and McKenzie's (in Stamford) are both good spots.
But mind you, the Roadhouse is in the middle of nowhere. Not the place to go and have to drive out of at night, especially if you plan on imbibing in some fine Oktoberfest ales!
lunch suggestions Milford, Fairfield, Monroe/Trumbull
Ralph and Rich's in Bridgeport has good food and great atmosphere.
Carmine's in Shelton on the River Road is also very enjoyable.
Plenty of places along the Post Road in Fairfield would fit your bill - take your pick!

need opinion on The Beach House brunch Milford CT
The restaurant itself is lovely (though parking is limited). The brunch, while a little pricey, is good (though the selections are limited). On a recent visit, the "carving station" consisted only of roast beef. The dessert selections were confined to a tiny table in the bar area. The breakfast and lunch selections were all tasty and well-prepared. We have been to the Beach House for dinner on several occasions - similarly, though pricey the meals were delicious and presented with great flare. We have never been to the place when it was crowded - in fact, the most we've ever seen is 4-5 other tables occupied. That said, the drawbacks are an "inconsistent" wait staff (quite attentive at the outset, then they tend to disappear, even though the place is deserted). And most irritating (IMHO) is the strange, blaring techno/world beat music. During our last two visits, we've complained to both our server and the owner...and nothing is done. This odd, atonal jazz is blasted out of their speakers...they REALLY need to rethink it!
Unfortunately, I can't compare to the SONO Brewhouse - have never been there for brunch.
So, take my opinion for what it's worth - the food is quite good, the restaurant itself is lovely, but the help and "atmosphere" are lacking. I DO have a friend whose brother had his wedding rehearsal dinner there - I believe the private party space is on the 2nd floor. I do not know how this would work with their brunch, since the buffet is on the first! (For the record, I was told that the rehearsal dinner was great there).

Weekend Lunch or Brunch Between Hartford and Amherst/Northampton
Reservations? Guess it couldn't hurt...but I doubt you'd need them (call the hotel and check)
It's a buffet brunch, so you have your choice of LOTS of great stuff - go hungry!
Casual, to be sure - a mixture of locals and hotel guests...
Enjoy! Please report back!
Weekend Lunch or Brunch Between Hartford and Amherst/Northampton
Ditto. The brunch at the Admiral Wiggins Inn at the Hotel Northampton is terrific!
Milford/New Haven Dinner for two for $50...
Unfortunately, nowadays there aren't a lot of choices (outside of fast food) where your bill will be less than $50 for two. The many choices mentioned below are all worthwhile (though I personally find the Bridge House overpriced - I don't think you could get out of there under $60). You could share some tapas at Bistro Basque in the center downtown - but with a drink or two, your bill will exceed your price range. Stonebridge has some dinner specials that are discounted (though the portions for these special are small) - I think you can get a 3 course dinner (salad/soup, entree and limited dessert option) for around $13 if you dine before 6. Good luck!

The new Plan B in Milford will be in the Whole Foods plaza (no idea quite where in the plaza).
They will be opening in June.
This came straight from PlanB management.

Any ideas for large groups in/around Hartford?
Trying to help out a friend who's bringing a bus trip to a show at the Bushnell and is looking for a restaurant nearby that could handle a large group (between 40 and 50) if given sufficient notice. I'm not familiar with the downtown dining scene, so I can't help. Anyone have any ideas??
Stratford, CT- goodbye Assagio, 12 hours later- hello, Bossa Nova Churrascaria
I had heard that a change was in the works, but didn't think it would happen for awhile, given the "demolition" going on at the site. I was shocked this morning to drive by the entrance to the dock and not only seen the sign for the restaurant, but the "NOW OPEN" beneath it! The entrance is blocked by a dumpster and broken down palates, and the sign is removed from the front of the restaurant. I can't see how they're actually serving patrons yet!
Xmas Eve Dining - Going Out Seemed Very Popular This Year!
Merry Christmas Chowhounds!
Just wanted to check in, as I got just got back with my (very) small family of 3 from a delicious dinner at the Beach House in Milford. When we arrived shortly after 5, we were one of only 3 parties there - frankly, I thought we might be it. By the time we left after 7:30, the place was easily 3/4 full. A pianist played throughout dinner, everyone present seemed of (very) good cheer, and as mentioned, the food was delish.
On our way home, we passed Jeffrey's and Stonebridge (in Milford) and both were very crowded with cars. In past years, we have had a difficult time even finding spots which were open on Xmas Eve, let alone those that would fill up. I sense a shift in the tide. Perhaps it is just the idea of hosting, or the cleanup, or the travelling, but more folks seem as if they're heading out and letting others do the cooking.
I hope whether you're dining at home with family, or heading out to your favorite eatery, that you all have a safe, happy and DELICIOUS holiday!

Restaurant en route to Schubert Theater New Haven
Been to both and though many would consider it heresy, I'd say both were just "OK." Very pricey Italian. IMHO, neither worth going out of your way for. There are plenty of places within walking distance of the theater...stick with one of those.
P.S. - I could be wrong, but I think Bespoke (mentioned below) has closed.
Be sure to call anyplace before you route the parents there.
Restaurant en route to Schubert Theater New Haven
On Christmas night? I'm not sure what restaurants will be open in that area...if any.
Really depends how much you want to spend, or the type of cuisine you're interested in.
For flat-out upscale, send them to Union League Cafe, around the corner from the theater. Zinc is always an interesting choice. Leon's on Long Wharf has OK (though pricey) Italian. Again, depends on the cuisine type you're shooting for (and again, I'm not sure which places will be open on Christmas night)

Philly Folks Spending Christmas in Milford -- Where can we eat the day after? (Will Drive For Good Food)
I second that!
Ola's is great!
And only minutes away!
Fresh (or frozen if I have to) Goose? Shoreline eastern Connecticut?
I just came from Big Y in Stratford, and they had a whole freezer full of frozen goose AND duck.
Where to Eat in New Haven or Fairfield Counties on New Years Eve?
Yep - Ola's is in the small strip mall next to TGIFriday's in Orange - but trust me, you'll never know you're on the Post Rd. It's like walking into another world. And if you go, park down around the back - most of the seating is now downstairs (though they may open the upstairs on New Year's Eve). Bistro Basque and Johnny Ray's in good old Milford are also highly recommended.
New Haven? Hmm..not much that makes me want to make the drive. Depends on your preference. If you want to go truly upscale and romantic, Union League Cafe is a can't miss. Carmen Anthony's is good steak. Otherwise, I really wouldn't recommend subjecting yourself to the traffic that'll be on the road that night (because don't forget, for many folks it's just another busy Friday night), plus the added nightmare of the Long Wharf and Q Bridge traffic. I'd try to stay close to home, where you'll get food that's every bit as good as if you travelled far.
P.S.
In Stratford, Assaggio's (at the Dock) and Rivienova's (downtown on Main St) have very good Italian and nice atmospheres. I won't kid you - it's not the best Italian I've ever had, but both are quite good.

Where to Eat in New Haven or Fairfield Counties on New Years Eve?
Well, I'm not sure that you're going to find anyplace nice and quiet..New Year's Eve is usually packed in every kind of restaurant. But - I can recommend both Beach House in Milford (I believe there is a singer there that night), or Ola's in Orange. I love Ola's, and you may be able to procure a quiet table for two (depending upon what time you want to go eat). PLUS the food is amazing!

Xmas Eve in Fairfield - Does anyplace do "Feast of 7 Fishes"
Over the years, our family has dwindled in size and now we're down to 4.
We generally try to find a nice quiet spot for Xmas Eve dinner.
We're looking for somewhere in Fairfield/Bridgeport/Stratford area that might prepare the Feast of the 7 Fishes on Christmas Eve. I know of lots of spots but their web sites aren't much help (and I was hoping not to have to spend hours on the phone).
Does anyone know of a spot that might be carrying on this tradition??
Lunch in Orange, CT
Not much, if you're not feeling adventuresome (and don't want ethnic)
Ale House is truly that - a bar.
Don't know what Restaurant Depot is.
As the other responder said, Jacob Marley's is now Mark Berry's.
The Post Road has mostly traditional "fast food" fare:
Dutchess, Bruegger's Bagels, Quizno's, TGIFriday's, Chile's, Bertucci's, Olive Garden, 5 Guys, IHop, KFC, On The Border (over in the Christmas Tree Shop plaza)
Outside that (aside from Bear and Grill), there's Chip's (pancake house), Gabrielle's (Italian), and some small deli's, chinese and italian spots.
Wood 'N Tap is scheduled to open in the old Humphrey's on Dec 15, but I think you'll miss that.
You won't find much different in Milford that isn't off the beaten path - McDonald's, Hometown Buffet, Subway, Taco Bell, Panera (and a food court) at the mall, Red Robin (at the mall), Pizzeria Uno, Hooters....and the list goes on.
Nothing to get too excited about, in almost every case.
THere's a small spot called "The Corner" in Milford Center across from the CIty Hall that's unique...but I'm not sure how far into Milford you want to venture.

I might also recommend Carmines on Rte 110 in Stratford. I have always enjoyed my meals there, though it's a bit small inside and can get noisy when crowded. The food is very good, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable.
