Trader Joe's Frozen Wagyu Beef Hamburgers

Forgot about this thread, sorry. Well I was a little disappointed. The first burger I cooked was medium to medium rare, and the center just seemed too mushy, just didn't feel right. This must be because of the tender nature of wagyu, but it just doesn't seem to be suited for hamburgers. The 2nd burger I cooked was well done and that was better, but nothing all that special. More flavorful than average ground beef, but not by a lot. For $5.99/lb, you're better off buying Trader Joe's organic which has more flavor and is easier to justify for the price in my opinion. Personally, I'm going to stick to going to a full service butcher, picking out a chuck roast, and ask it to be ground and I can usually keep it to under $3/lb and I know I'm reducing my risk of e coli infection when I cook it to medium.

cheap indian food in manhattan

It's not Manhattan, but if you go to the Canteen in the basement of the Ganapathi Temple in Flushing, Queens you will not be disappointed. Extremely good prices, very authentic, no waiters or nice atmostphere. http://www.nyganeshtemple.org/temple/t_canteen.htm The dosas in particular are excellent.

Looking for source for good Russian Coffee Cake

I think(though I'm not sure) that it is a cake originally brought over to NY by Russian Jews, so gentile Russians may not be familiar with it.

Moving to Astoria

That's El Athen's Grill. Another good place for Mexican Take Out on 30th Ave is La Cabana between 33rd and 34th. In my opinion better prices and better food than the truck across the street.

airport diner in astoria

The breakfast really is fantastic. I always order a belgian waffle which comes out perfectly crisp and tender, and it's served with REAL maple syrup. They also serve properly poached eggs which can be tricky to find.

"El Grill" on 30th Ave. in Astoria?

That's El Athens Grill. It's pretty good. Besides the window, there is also a restaurant with tables and a bar inside. I usually get the Huaraches, usually Al Pastor. It's a particularly good value. It's $6 and I have trouble finishing. If you want to sample the various meats typical of taquerias, get the tacos so you can try multiple kinds.

Donovan's Burgers Maddeningly Inconsistent

Re: the soggy bun.

There are 2 things you can do to minimize this. First, ask for mayo on the bottom between the burger and the bun. Because mayo is an oily emulsion it will provide a bit of a barrier between the juices from the burger and the bun.

The second thing you can do is allow the burger to rest before you bite into it. Start by eating some of those fries and after a few minutes or so start the burger. By letting the burger rest it will retain more of its juices and spill out less onto your bun.
