Vegetarian-friendly restaurant as gift

Serpico was amazing & had several delicious vegetarian options. We had a vegetarian who also ate fish in our dinner party, and we all shared plates. Unfortunately for you, a Starr restaurant, but does not feel like a Starr restaurant. hope that helps.

Ambler Feedstore

I went on Saturday. They had the first day jitters, still working things out. Everything felt a tad bit pricey for the concept. I only had the short rib sandwich with kimchi & fries. kimchi was not house-made, which I noticed right away, and that was a disappointment. they told me they haven't been open long enough yet to make their own but they will be. Fries were okay, not as good as the ones at nearby Forest & Main. This place has potential, as there are some good signs. Rooting for them & will go back.

I believe they are not open for weekday lunch, but Heirloom has weekend brunch & is the best restaurant in CH, IMO.

The Lucky Well= BBQ+

Thanks for the detailed review. I believe you spelled Shanachie correctly but you probably did not pronounce it correctly, since none of us did. This sounds a lot like my impression of Rosie's BBQ (Chad's old BBQ joint): solid sides, okay BBQ. However, the rest of the menu looks tremendous. I am excited to get there & try out the non-BBQ items.

Hard Apple Cider - What and Where?

Frecon Farms in Boyertown has had 2 hard ciders for sale at the Ambler farmer's market every Saturday. I am not a cider drinker, but bought one & enjoyed it. Definitely a dry cider.

Also, as for stiffing a waitress for a few careless acts, that is not in my DNA. If I get inferior service, I usually reduce the tip to 15% (which is what she got).

To comp or not to comp

Hello all, OP here. Thanks to those of you who gave thoughtful replies & advice. Unfortunately, the manager/chef/owner was the man cooking the pizzas, so I presumed he would know that the pizza was forgotten about when his server went to him & said (Again, I am presuming) "get this one done quickly, I forgot about it.". But, it's a fair comment to state that I shouldn't have presumed anything. Again, the place was empty when we got there, but busy when we were leaving 1.5 hours later. I momentarily stopped to discuss, but he looked like he was in the weeds. I really could not care less about the $15, so this is not a monetary thing. And, I did not name the restaurant because I mean the restaurant no ill will & certainly would go back for the quality of their food. I think Givemecarbs was spot on below about the waitstaff was exclusively college-aged women. This was really more of an etiquette/process question, and i sincerely thank those of you who gave insightful responses.

To comp or not to comp

...that is my question. My wife, 3 yo son & I went to a gourmet pizza place much lauded on this board. We have been eager to go there for years, and the stars were aligned on Friday evening. We were the first family in at 5 PM & quickly placed our order. Our son is an excellent eater & very well behaved at restaurants, but has his limits like most toddlers. We ordered an app, which was delivered on time & well executed. Then, 1 of our 2 pizzas arrived. I waited about 5 minutes, then asked a server (not our waitress) to check on our 2nd pizza. 15 minutes later, still no pizza. Our waitress had not been to our table to check on anything, so finally had the opportunity to check with her after she served a table that was seated immediately next to us. I asked her for a refill of iced tea (glasses were empty) at the same time. The other server came back in a few minutes & said the 2nd pizza would be another 3-4 minutes, Obviously, the order was never placed. The waitress did come by to take our adjacent table's order, which afforded me the opportunity to remind her that we still had no iced tea refill. Soon after, the pizza finally arrived with apologies from the waitress, about 1 hour 15 minutes after we first sat down. Did I mention the 2nd pizza was mushroom which we primarily ordered since it was our son's favorite? We each ate a slice, took the rest to go, and I waited for the check while my wife took the boy for a brief walkabout. Check came with everything at full price & no second apology. Thoughts?

Ambler / Lower Gwynedd

agree on Unkle Al's reviews. We have a 3 year old & our go-to places for casual meals are Vic sushi (very limited seating, so best for takeout), Cantina Feliz, & Saffron. Love all three. If you escape for an evening for an adult dinner, highly recommend jetting on over to Conshy (20 min away) to Blackfish. We also love Thai Orchid in nearby Bluebell for casual thai, others on this board would send to closer Thai Aroma (near Broad Axe tavern & Phils).

I have not been to L'elephant. It compares favorably to Thai Orchid & Thai Aroma. In that range.

Terrific Thai in Eagleville

My family went to the recently opened Mango Tree Bistro in Eagleville. We had a delightful meal! The owners used to work for Thai Orchid in Bluebell. The menu is similar with a few Asian fusion additions. I had the house special, Sea Bass in a very nuanced Mandarin Orange sauce with just a hint of heat. It was served over perfectly steamed Bok Choy, with asparagus & rice on the side. Phenomenal! We also enjoyed 4 appetizers between the 3 of us, highlighted by the fresh spring rolls served with a warm yellow bean sauce for dipping.

Excellent meal, really cute atmosphere, BYOB. Unfortunately, the restaurant was empty, albeit we were there early.

Restaurant Week deals in Ambler

We ate at Forest & main for dinner last night. We left stuffed. Restaurant week menu includes a pint of any beer with 3 courses for $25. Ridiculous! I shared my three courses with our 3 year old. Fish & chips were good; I only order them because my little guy loves them. Summer corn soup & pierogies were excellent. New Bitter on handpump (I think it's called Tinesdale?) was incredible. I love their English style beers....so excellent. Only downside is that the service can be slow, especially (it seems) when we arrive early. The staff could not possibly be nicer or more accommodating, but I think the small kitchen just precludes them from keeping up with demand. It was a long dinner to keep our little guy occupied. Still, we had a blast!

Anything good near Parx Casino?

I work nearby. Agree that Toscana is the best of the chains. We take work friends there for lunch on occassion & it's consistently good. Best restaurant in the area is Blue Sage, vegetarian & about 10-20 minute drive from Parx depending upon hour of day.

Breakfast in Ambler

Ambler desperately needs a good breakfast spot. We tried Zina's, the establishment formally known as Coneheads.....nice folks, fair prices but both are average breakfasts at best. We drive to Fairlanes', West end grill, or Zake's for a great (2 out of 3 pricy) breakfast. Not helpful for your Dad, I know. Just venting. We're hoping Sweet briar cafe will be the answer to our syrup soaked prayers.

Forest and Main --Ambler Brewpub

Before I had the burger, I did fill out their customer survey & wrote that I thought all prices were spot on except $15 was too high a price point for a burger. Having now had the burger, I'd spend $15 all over again. It's excellent. I know my wife is at 20 manning tonight & their cheeseburger is $15, so iI don't think it's an outrageous rate. Keep in mind, F & M beer is main attraction & a flight of home made brew is only $6.50 & a pint of delicious bitter is only $4.50. So, get the burger & a bunch of beers, and you'll be a happy soul & happily pay the bill at night's end.

Forest and Main --Ambler Brewpub

Thanks for the questions, fellow 'hounds. As for the Belgians, a group of us went to F & M after our usual Ultimate frisbee game at nearby Temple Ambler. We all had flights, followed by pints. The consensus opinion on Lunaire & Solaire were that they were too light, needed more of that Saison-esque spicy complexity & maybe a bit more sourness. The Vera is great & everyone lapped that up. I am not trashing their belgians: I just think the English inspired beers are better. As for kids, it is very kid friendly IMO as long as it's not crowded. We took our son there at 5 on a Saturday hoping for outdoor seating, but no such luck. There was already a couple with an infant outside, btw. We sat inside & the room soon filled up with 4 other tables, somewhat surprisingly 2 tables were populated by 2 separate groups of senior ladies. So, I would say they seem to be attracting folks of all ages, which is great! I assume it's less kjd friendly as the night goes on & it gets more crowded & a younger demographic.
As for the lamb, reasonably priced at $17, I thought it was very tasty but was disappointed by the spaetzle. Having grown up on German food from a Pennsylvania Dutch dad who is a fantastic cook, I am a bit tough to please when it comes to my favorite German side dish. The arugula was a nice compliment. I don't recall any sauce or anything to soak up with the spaetzle, either, but my memory is a bit beer infused from that evening so I could be wrong.

Forest and Main --Ambler Brewpub

We ate at Forest & Main for the 3rd time this past weekend. I've now had the fish & chips, the lamb shank & spaetzel, & the burger. I swore I would never order a $15 burger, but my wife & I both did. And.......wow! loved it. just perfect. I'd order it again & it pains me to admit it. My 2 year old inhaled the fish & chips, which I has on trip #1. They're solid bordering on very good. I've tasted every beer they're had on tap, I think. The british beers are better than the Belgian inspired. The kinch on hand pump was a revelation, so great! My wife enjoyed the very light but tasty Pigeontown.
If I built a brewpub, it would look exactly like this joint. The most unique place in the suburbs for a beer, methinks.

Forest & Main Brewpub

Visited last night during soft opening. Totally unique place. Tasted all 8 house brews in flights. Kinch & Vera were standouts, 7% smooth APA & dark Belgian ale, respectively. If a 1920's speakeasy, a cute bed & breakfast & a frat house had a baby, it might be called forest & main. Bacon popcorn was only food but full pub menu starting tonight. Very promising.
