Mike's Deli - Old Saybrook

Mike's is our mandatory stop on the weekends at the shore. Sandwiches are good, try the prime rib or smoked kielbasa if it's a special. Then pick up steak and sausages for grilling.

We were over there last weekend and I give them credit for opening temporarily under the circumstances.

Lunch near The Shoppes at Farmington Valley, CT

Also, http://www.flatbreadcompany.com/Flatb...

Elephant Trail is further down Rt. 44, but they do have excellent Thai food
Avon Indian Grill, also on Rt. 44 has a nice lunch buffet
Blue Sky Foods in New Hartford is very funky, but as TnTinCT mentioned, be sure to call ahead for hours

CT hound visiting Philly for three days

Thanks, Reading Terminal is probably my favorite food market on the planet! Usually, we visit Philly without kids, so thank you for the suggestions. I will report back. One of the best things about Philly is many places are walkable or a short SEPTA ride.

CT hound visiting Philly for three days

Thanks for the heads up, is this an annual event? We spent Labor Day in the city last year, and crowds weren't an issue. But that might explain why our regular hotel was sold out.

CT hound visiting Philly for three days

Hello, we're spending Labor day weekend in the city, staying at the Marriott. Usually we visit without kids, this time we will have the 7 year old. Any suggestons for family friendly dining? She's a steak lover, so any recommendations on that would be great! We've been eschewing NYC in favor of trips to Philly, what a great place to visit and CHOW!!

the former Papacelle, Avon

The menu seems to be your typical red sauce Italian. I hope they do well, it is a nice space but I wish Avon had a little more food diversity. Having said that, I really liked Papacelle!

Farm - Avon, CT

I heard Carl Rynecki has left Farm, at the Avon Old Farms Hotel and sadly, the food was not up to par. Has anyone been there in the last two weeks and experienced the same? It is my favorite restaurant in town, and hopefully they are just going through a period of adjustment. My OTHER favorite, Pappacelle, closed earlier this year. I am trapped in a town with too many pizza places :-(

Shady Glen, Manchester CT

I grew up on Shady Glen, and it definitely not the best burger around, it's more about the nostalgia...and fried cheese.

Saybrook Soup & Sandwich Co.

Highly recommend Mike's, we are there almost every weekend in the summer to pick up steaks and burgers. His sandwiches are delicious, the prime rib and kielbasa sandwich are favorites. (the kielbasa is usually a special). He did add a dining room to serve dinner, never seen anyone using it for lunch although there are a couple of tables outside. Glad to hear good things about the Soup & Sandwich Co,, I keep driving by it but will stop next time!

ISO of location for private breakfast meeting - Hartford area

The Hartford Marriott and Rocky Hill Marriott are conveniently located meeting venues. Also, you could check with some of the local golf courses, here is one located in West Hartford:

Polish in CT

I like Staropolska (try the bigos - Hunter's Stew) and the place down the street from it, Crachovia. Food is good, simply prepared. One of the best things about eating at either place is that you are right in the Polish neighborhood, surrounded by delis, bakeries and markets. A true gem in CT.

Vecchitto Italian Ice (Middletown, CT) is OPEN: Summertime is here!

The sign in the truck looks like the original from the "nostalgia days"! It started up last week around the shoreline, we were visiting and I basically ran to it like a 5 year old, HA HA so happy... Of course, that does not deter us from stopping in Middletown on the way home.

Glastonbury,CT- the "Burger Capitol of America?"

Thanks for the Apricot's mention, I always thought they had one of the best burgers in the area! Especially eaten outside. I am a big fan of the burger at Joe Pizza too.

Meat House

I go to the one in Avon, it's a convenient stop for me on the way home. I agree with Tinkerbelldee, steak and turkey tips are good. Meats are o.k. They are over the top friendly, but I have no complaints about that. I think their strong suit is the selection of local products. (cheeses, salsas, ice cream, to name a few). Having said that, I don't understand why they carry Stonewall Kitchen (the store is right across the street), and would prefer they use that shelf space for more local jams/sauces, etc.

Pizza Dough - Farmington/Avon/Simsbury

Yes, I know the Farmington Valley is packed to the gills with pizza places (and more to come!); but does anyone know which ones sell their dough? Time to improve the homemade version!

Thanks!
