Mi Tierra Tu Taqueria-Calgary
Glad to hear everything went well on their first day! Can't wait to get back to Calgary and give it a try.
In my chat with Diana on Wednesday she mentioned that Mi Tierra sits 44, so Tu Tierra is only twice the size - I certainly would have estimated the same size difference as nonlinear!!!
Also, they are thinking of having a grand opening around March 1, after they've had a chance to wring out the wrinkles.
Mi Tierra Tu Taqueria-Calgary
Just stopped in again (Wednesday, January 27/10) and had a good visit with Diana. They passed their final inspection today, and as truthserum said, they are prepping the kitchen for tomorrow, when they will be open at noon. Looks really nice inside I have to say.
The story on the sign is that they no longer allow signs of that size anymore so they have to modify what already exists.
Since I'm leaving town in the morning for a month I'll be watching here for comments on the new place!
Mi Tierra Tu Taqueria-Calgary
Stopped by for a moment today - Jan 26/10 and they're not open yet. Chatted with the guy doing the sign, and it will be modified to look like a Mexican Hat, so the Chinese wings will stay, sort of. Apparently they decided to take that route due to problems getting a new sign permit if they went with a completely new one.
Don't know when they'll open, but peering through the windows I saw what looks like a restaurant ready to open.
Best Burger in Calgary?
A number of years ago the Calgary Herald had a similar quest to find the best burger in town, and they selected the Burger Inn. So I tried the one on MacLeod near the Brick, and the burger was poor. It actually tasted like it contained Lysol! Went back again and again had a similar experience.
Best Burger in Calgary?
I have always been a huge fan of White Spot burgers until recently. Don'y know what they did, but the overall burger (the original, without lettuce etc.) is now a bland copy of its former self.
I stopped at their drive-through in Cranbrook (perhaps the one you are thinking of John?) and will NEVER do that again. After a very lengthy wait at the window (I was the only one in line) I was given the food and away I went. The burger was the wrong one, which I had explained in detail when ordering, and the rings were obviously cardboard cutouts from somewhere. Just awful.
Mi Tierra Tu Taqueria-Calgary
Stopped in at their new location yesterday (December 14/09) and they have suffered some delays so expect to open around the beginning of January.
Much larger!
Again, their location is on Fairmont Drive, just on the south side of Heritage, beside the Parthenon restaurant.
The name of their new location is "Tu Tierra""

breakfast in Calgary
Some suggestions....Smugglers has a good (i.e., hearty) Sunday brunch, as does the Delta (can be spotty) at Southland & Macleod. Further south than your demarcation line of course is Cora's - great if you like waiting in line.
Jubilations? (YYC)
I don't think you can judge Jubilations strictly on the food. They have a stage show, they have an adcast (folks who are actors and also the servers) and they have a meal. The stage shows are humourous, full of interesting talent, and high energy, but don't expect a spectacular plotline. The adcast provides ongoing kibitzing at your table, which can be fun if you enjoy that kind of thing. And the food is definitely middle of the road; nothing too special, but not horrible.
My point is that I would not go there specifically for the food, but for the overall experience.
The only other similar kind of offering that I'm aware of in Calgary is StageWest, which tends to have name talent onstage, and is priced accordingly.
Broken Plate Greek Restaurant - Calgary
Agree that the Broken Plate ( in the south at least) is average at best. Our favourite Greek over the years has always been Pegasus; the food and atmosphere are great. (When I look into the kitchen and see that all the chefs are oriental I do have to chuckle though.) Santorini's used to be great, so I'm sorry to hear the negatives here.
Mi Tierra Tu Taqueria-Calgary
We've been semi - regulars since the spring (09) and can't get enough of it. Their Sopes are incredible, to the point where I went through withdrawal when they were temporarily out of ingredients.
Their new restaurant (they're also keeping the original) will be in the same mall as the Parthenon, which is at Fairview & Heritage.

Osteria de Medici Calgary
Admittedly I haven't been to Osteria recently, but with one exception I've always had excellent service and excellent food. In fact I was introduced to the best calamari and tiramisu ever in Osteria.
My only negative experience was a Valentine's evening where the beef was stringy and tasteless.
I would go back in a minute, but not on Valentine's.

Mexican in Calgary
Absolutely second the Mi Tierra suggestion. And try their Sopes.

Saltines, Soda Crackers, Whatever...
I agree, although possibly for different reasons. Tonight I picked up some premium soda crackers for my little dose of Imperial cheese. Remember that in our house my choice of crackers is at the bottom, so I don't get to savor them very often. Anyway, I sat down to enjoy my fine repast, and the crackers crumbled so badly that I had to give up and get something else. A dream dashed.
