Chinatown: Crown Royal Bakery, Xinh Xinh

I had a summer roll there that was hard, like it had been sitting out, you know how the rice paper can get all ick? Also my beau said he thought the beef Pho used to be outstanding, but now it is run of the mill. I asked about the old staff, they say they are still there. I didn't think the floors used to be that grotty. Where should I go now that is not the Pho Pasteur?

Has anyone else been to Xinh Xinh lately? I am wondering if it was bought by a different owner. The cheerful brother sister couple that were always there (well I thought they were brother sister) seem to be gone as of maybe 4 months ago and the food is not nearly as good. Hard tough summer roll. Pho not as delicious... The floors are filthy looking. It used to be my favorite place and now,.. no. Anyone else notice a change?

Flatbread Company Moving into Sacco's Bowl Haven

Went there on Friday. I used to go there for league bowling all the time. I'm very sad. The whole place has been gutted, the original charm is gone. Half the lanes have been converted into a bar area, the pool area is gone and is now an open plan dining room. It is nice to get drinks and pizza at your lane, but it is really sad to see them replace actual charm with out of the box "modern restaurant decor". Sad!

Woodward at the Ames

Just went there for lunch with coworkers. Was unimpressed. The only thing exceptional about my meal was pickle chips on corner of plate. Had veal pastrami sandwich. It was OK, came grilled (if I'd known I would have asked for it not to be), with lots of seed-filled mustard (attractive but just average flavor). Shoestring fries on side looked great but tasted old/hard. Got the 'english radish' appetizer which was a joke. Salty toast with 3 shavings of palate undetectable radish on top. Not a $7 appetizer, more a 63 cent affair. My $4 tea came in a bag. My coworker had the oysters which he said was great, my boss had the burger which she thought was similarly unremarkable and too big (2 patties = about 10 oz). The space is beautiful, service fine. I'd go back for drinks but never for food. Not bad, but for these prices not worth it at all. Might as well have gone to Silvertone for half the price.

2 weeks in Boston, Where to go?

In the quick browse there seems to be a lack of cheapies on this list so I say to you if you are seeking wee dives with great food try the Delux Cafe at 100 Chandler street. A bar that serves food for young hipsters, but the food, oh the food! The grilled cheese with marinated artichokes, the homemade fruit salsa for the quesadillas, it is real quality stuff. Cash only!
