Brooklyn Commune

I have been staying near Prospect Park and had breakfast 3 times at the Brooklyn Commune. I had previously been to the Clinton Street Bakery and Community Food and Juice for breakfast and rate this higher. The lemon ricotta pancakes were incredibly light and moist, the grits with cheese and poached egg was perfect comfort food and a sort of farm house plate was absolutely delicious. I never got round to their lunch or supper dishes but they sounded good.

Montpellier / Cevennes

I am very sad to hear that L'auberge de Bourras is closing. Madame is lovely and I could even occasionally make her smile. Monsieur does not think much of English cooking but loves lemon curd so I would always take a jar with me (and usually get some home-made jam in return).
On a happier note we had a really good lunch in St Hippolyte du Fort-in a hotel restaurant...I can not remember the name but it was the french for a poisonous mushroom with red and white spots...Amanite???

Hallo
I don't know how long you are prepared to drive for a good meal as the distances are small but the roads are windy and long-oh to be a bird. But in the little hamlet of Soudorgues, above Lasalle is a marvellous village restaurant Le Fageas. Just outside Durfort is Hotel Real for a good lunch-I find the supper tries to be a bit too fussy. Imbetween Colognac and St Roman de Codieres is the Auberge de Bourras-refined but tasty food in somewhere too small even to be a hamlet.
If any of those are do-able for you I can find telephone numbers

Tiny Venice Review

I just had a couple of days in Venice and had 2 meals guided by posts here. I was disappointed in OSTARIA DA RIOBA . It was OK-nothing special , the menu was small and not particularly well balanced which made it hard to choose courses which went together. It also seemed very expensive for what it was. I thoroughly enjoyed Sunday lunch at Fiaschettaria Toscana. Service was professional and friendly . I had stuffed courgette flowers which were the best I have had, served with a fresh tomato salsa with a bite which went well with the ricotta based stuffing. The liver was perfect and the artichoke hearts were cooked in a way that made them almost fondant and brought out their intense flavour. Not as expensive as the Rioba.
I also loved a lunch I had at a very small Osteria on the Campo Santa Margharita, whose name, to my shame, I have forgotten. A simple capaccio of smoked tuna with a glass of prosecco. Bliss

early evening meal near Gare de Bercy

Hi
I am boarding a train at about 8pm from the Gare de Bercy and would like to have a meal before this very near the station. A brasserie would seem ideal but there doesn't seem to be much near?

Just moved to Camberwell [SE5], looking for recs [London]

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Viet Hoa on Camberwell Church Street, more or less opposite Silk Road. Ignore the chinese food and go for the Vietnamese which is great. Also if you venture down to East Dulwich the Thai corne cafe is good and you are spoilt for choice for Indian restaurants. Tandoori nights and Swadesh are probably a cut above the others, and Surma is consistently good.

Thanks Chowhounds+mini report

A few weeks ago I posted to ask where and what the archetypal New York breakfast that I had been dreaming about for years should be. Following chowhounders' recommendations I went to the Clinton Street bakery and ordered pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup and sweet cured bacon on the side (photo attached) I do not have anything to compare it with but it was delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and light, the blueberries plentiful and tasty, the maple syrup lovely and against all my expectations the bacon went well with it, although I would have enjoyed it a little less crispy. I also found another upside to solo travelling-I didn't have to wait very long for a lone seat at the counter. Another breakfast recommendation was for the kitchenette and I had very nice corned beef hash with fried eggs there.
I enjoyed everything I ate whilst in New York. On the first night I needed something very soothing, to help me get over the journey. My New York friend remembered a neighbourhood restaurant she used to like-Popovers on the corner of W86th and Amsterdam Avenue. Except for the eponymous popover served with strawberry butter this was very fine home cooking, and good value at $25 for 3 courses. I would be happy to make cabbage borscht as tasty as theirs and the turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes was perfect comfort food. I could have put my head down and fallen asleep in it then and there.
The next night, on a recommendation from a local we went to La rural, an argentinian steakhouse on768 Amsterdam Avenue. I had short ribs-a cut we don't have in England. It was delicious, perfectly cooked as I had asked, tasty, juicy and well seasoned. One of my friends had skirt beef which he said was also very good. What i don't understand is why New York restaurants give such big portions, both the turkey loaf and the steak were twice as much as was edible. I know you can take it home and luckily I was with friends who could and did, but for tourists this is not a viable option and I hate the waste.
Also ate at another local, a chinese called Ollies on the corner of Broadway and W116th street. pea-shoots with garlic, beef in black been sauce and garlic, we may have reeked but left happy. My only disappointment-in all the films and tv I have seen you get fortune cookies in American Chinese restaurants. But not here.
I pigged on the Lower East side with breakfast as above, ice cream from the labatorio del gelato on Orchard Street, a knish from the knish shop and a pastrami sandwich to take home from Katz's. The only disappointment was that when I got home they hadn't given me rye as I had asked, and the pickle was watery. The pastrami however was delicious.
Zabar's was a wonder and the food I ate and the food shops I saw made me feel I would be happy to be a New Yorker-the city's not bad either!

Some places in Southwark, London

The silk road in Camberwell Church street. North western Chinese, lots of lamb, noodles, cabbage and aubergine. Unctuous, warming, homely. While we were there the noodles were being home made at another table.

Thank you. I will report back. I have plenty of choices now. My only worry is my waist line and a slight concern about the combination of maple syrup and bacon but I can't wait to try it.

Dream breakfast

Hallo
At last I am going to New York. For much of my life I have read, seen films and tv programmes about American breakfasts. Where is the best place in New York to try the things I have heard about? Eggs over easy, stacks of pancakes with syrup and bacon, hash browns.....or things I haven't heard about?
Thanks
