Foods that unreasonably gross you out...

I hate black licorice but love root beer. It's only been the past couple of years that I figured out they have a similar taste, but that doesn't change anything. Black licorice just makes me gag.

OTOH, bacon ice cream root beer float sounds fabulous!

9/11 Commemorative Wines vs. Bourdain

LOL. I usually just bite my tongue and keep it to myself, because people looooove him so much, but I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm an opinionated loudmouth, just like he is, but I try to at least think before I start spouting insults.

9/11 Commemorative Wines vs. Bourdain

It's my understanding that the Memorial Fund actually requested that the wine be so labelled. Bourdain is a pompous, self-important asshole who NEVER checks his facts or anyone else's feelings before he spouts his trash.

How do you pronounce "OYSTER"?

That's exactly how I learned it. I was going to spell it oyscher. Now, as an adult, I say oyster.

worst represented food in KC? ie. what should we eat lots of before moving to KC?

Oh, you are so lucky! Brookside is just delightful, and really centrally located.

We do have a couple of good Indian restaurants, but I would guess that area of the world is the least represented.

Kansas City MO at Crown Center, local places to eat nearby?

I would definitely agree with most of the suggestions. Grinders is divey and fun, and really an easy walk. I ate there Saturday night.

Another fun place nearby is Hamburger Mary's. It's technically a gay bar/restaurant, but not so much at lunch, and has the best sweet potato fries! I've been there with a couple of other women, and saw older people and children there. It has a really nice, friendly, inclusive feeling.

Jack Stack is my favorite BBQ restaurant in KC. And the Mexican restaurants on Southwest Blvd. are legendary (to us, anyway).

With those options, you really can't go wrong!

Oh, thanks for making me spit water on my keyboard! That's when I really started disliking SC, whining about not liking raw onion (who doesn't like red onion?). What a douche!

KC Frozen Custard: Shake's, Foo's, Sheridan's, Twisters or Custard's Last Stand?

I like Sheridan's, although I don't eat a lot of frozen custard. Their seasonal strawberry shortcake is really good, but a lot of it is the fresh berries and tasty sweet biscuit shortcake.

For ice cream, I definitely second Glace. And they're so generous with tastes there!

Top Chef Masters Season 3, Episode 7 (SPOILERS)

I know---ewww! I'm their age and certainly we're not dead from the neck down, but it was so forced and icky. I did know about Gael and Elvis; that's kind of when I lost interest in her book.

Top Chef Masters Season 3, Episode 7 (SPOILERS)

I agree completely. They were given a specific challenge, then judged by different standards. The chefs who weren't the first 3 called rightly (to me) assumed they were called first because they met the challenge best. Even the chefs thought that!!!!! Hugh gets a slightly snotty attitude when he's questioned (just like I do) but he was right; the judges were way off base.

That said, Mr. Charming Aussie is starting to grow on me. He does seem more comfortable and natural as a host than past skinny Asian chicks.

Top Chef Masters Season 3, Episode 6 (SPOILERS)

I have to think editing is manipulating us again, because last night I thought Hugh was hilarious and likeable, after practically despising him up to this point. Why are they trying to revamp his image at this point? Because they can? Or has he really suddenly changed?

Top Chef Masters Season 3, Episode 5 (Spoilers)

I think it's pretty unanimous that we're underwhelmed by the judges this season. I just don't get them at all. Maybe I'm too old, but honestly, I do have young friends and I respect them. These two just seem so representative of a snarky, know-it-all attitude that I probably had myself at that age. If I were one of those fine chefs I would have a hard time not resenting those people having the gall to judge me.

Top Chef Masters: I miss that little imp and her whimsical hats!

Didn't know how much I preferred those people until they suddenly put on children whose only claim to fame is food blogging. Heck, I post pictures and descriptions of food on Facebook; why don't they call me for the show?

America's Next Top Restaurant, 4/24/11 (spoilers)

When they were asking for Spice Coast guy's weaknesses, my thought was, does Chipotle guy know that his personality is his major weakness? And is he doing anything about it? Also toward him, how dare someone whose dishes are zillion calorie/fat grams lecture anyone about healthy food? He is just so unpleasant and irritating!

Not every restaurant has to have all healthy, yet simultaneously child-friendly food. Most offer a couple of marginally healthy options that you can put together if you want. At Chipotle I order a bowl, no rice, half black beans, no sour cream, no guac, sprinkle of cheese, lots of lettuce. Otherwise I end up with about 2 days worth of calories, and a week's worth of fat grams.

Maybe they're just throwing these ridiculous things at them to see how they cope with criticism and change. But it's a somewhat ridiculous show.

Top Chef Masters Season 3, Episode 3 - Spoilers

It was a really terrible episode. At least all the ads showing the bug thing will be over now. I was just dreading the episode, and didn't watch while they were doing it. Bugs. No. Never. Maybe if I were starving, but that's not really what a top chef has to be prepared for. Just so repulsive and disgusting. I think the veg chef was a complete hero for even sticking around for the "challenge". Gross gross gross!!!!!

But Chef Tio talked about her restaurant not having running water once so no toilets, and having to send patrons across the street to the supermarket (I shop there!) to use the restroom. Ew! Did the employees run over there to wash their hands?

Sur la table- Microwave Popper

I neglected to mention that I'm also trying to cut fat and calories! Butter and/or oil sound awesome, but the goal is to avoid them. I also have a stovetop Whirly one, but that Presto Powerpop is what I'm looking at. You use a little oil with that?

America's Next Great Restaurant, 4/17/11 (Spoilers)

I just couldn't agree with you more. I find him so unlikeable I don't ever want to eat at Chipotle again. What an unpleasant personality!

And the whole "kid's menu" thing was just lame. Why can't a restaurant be geared to adults? I would have liked some Indian food as a child, but children don't rule the world. Why does everything have to be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator (i.e., picky children who only want chicken nuggets and fries)?

And how are whole wheat waffles and turkey sausage or chicken unhealthy? If you only feed your kids fast food, you should know you're not getting a really healthy, balanced diet.

All that said, Sophie Flay was a pretty self-possessed and well-spoken little girl! I would probably want her in my focus group. Wonder how much coaching she had.

Trying to recall cookies from the past

This whole topic is pretty funny for Chowhound, because I bet most of us wouldn't even eat packaged cookies now (I almost never do), but darn, they were sooo important when we were kids! I remember so many that my family loved: Oreos (of course), Vienna Fingers, windmill, Danish wedding cookies. Such wonderful memories.

That was Kelis, the singer who did "My Milkshake". I was surprised that she seemed fairly knowledgeable and well-spoken, but really, you should eat food the way it was intended (soup with a fork?!?).

Oh, geez, is that style never going away? I find it so unattractive on most people, even young girls, and sometimes bordering on obscene! Thank God I have a low waist, and can wear the highest-cut of those.

What is your "perfect breakfast"? [moved from Home Cooking]

When I was young and first on my own, my friends and I would occasionally have dinner at a diner, 2 eggs over easy, hash browns, sausage and toast. I just thought that was the best thing in the world.

Now, eggs Benedict. Every once in awhile, a waffle with warm maple syrup.

In San Antonio, Mi Tierra breakfast tacos.

In the real, everyday world, I usually have slow-cooker oatmeal with raisins and black coffee. Which is quite good!

Me too, exactly! Mmmm.

Also on hot raisin toast, all melty and good. With sliced bananas.
