Cancun Hotel Zone - El Fish Fritanga 12.5 KM

Ate here several times while on a short trip. Food in the hotel zone is pretty dismal and expensive to boot. The best fish tacos made by Chef Pili at the taco stand in front of the restaurant, just look for all the taxi drivers. Grilled fish marinated in achiote, served with onions, cilantro and a slice of avo, 14 pesos each. Be sure to get some habanero salsa with it. If they have the chile relleno available, get that too, perfectly fried, very thin batter. Grab a beer in the minimart next door while you wait or eat, best food in the hotel zone!

Koh Lipe, Thailand for Songkran

Spent Songkran on Koh Phi Phi Don, however did find a few worthy spots while on Koh Lipe:

Bung Roon Halal Food - right on the beach to the right of the main street entrance has a great selection of fish for BBQ in the evenings. Had blue crabs in yellow curry, whole yellow tail tuna, and 'king' prawns, simply grilled and the usual selection of Thai accompaniments including a side dish of a very spicy finely chopped salsa, habanero like. You pick your fish, they weigh it, you can have it how you want, but their fiery beach front BBQ was always my choice. Prices 200-500 baht per kilo, prawns on the higher end. They had a king mackerel you could buy by the piece, other choices at the time looked fresher to me.

Spider Monkey - located down the main street on the right side had a good selection of Thai curries and noodle dishes, also wood fired pizza - for my son who doesn't do Thai food - yet. Bartender made great Caipirinha's.

Lekka Lipe - great gelato shop owned by very sweet young woman from Bologna. She goes back home in the low season and returns to Koh Lipe in August I believe.

Pooh's - This place was ok, run of the mill Thai dishes, we went more for the free internet. Located further down the main road.

There is a great looking Malay 'pancake' place with all kinds of fillings available, never had a chance to try but they were very popular with the locals. Not more than maybe 100 meters from the entrance to the main drag on the right.

Overall far better eats than Koh Muk, which was very scarce if you could find anything other than the place you were staying at.

Koh Lipe, Thailand for Songkran

Long shot here, going to Koh Lipe for a few days during Songkran. Is there anything worth mentioning as far as eats go? Will report back on anything I find. Thanks!

Best selection of cheese in which Bangkok supermarket or?

Need to know where to find the best cheese selection in Bangkok. Thanks!

Ko Chang, Trat, Thailand

Thanks for the info Curt, fortunately I have a few more weeks before I make it out there. Otherwise I may need to start thinking of Ko Samet or just keep heading west to Hua Hin if it's too wet.

Ko Chang, Trat, Thailand

A wild stab here, not much on CH for Thailand. Any food recs for this island? Thanks in advance!

The Saltwater Eel Master (or, The Easygoing Anti-Sushi Nazi of Kaito Sushi) (San Diego) [Review] w/ Pics!

Honkman, take Kaito for what it is, a neighborhood sushi bar and very good one at that. Exilekiss may be a little pissed off because they spent $150 per person and expected better service. Notice exilekiss other reviews from down here and there is no mention of service. It's a neighborhood sushi bar for goodness sakes, not a Michelin starred restaurant.

Sea Rocket Bistro

DD, I agree with you along with my free chips and salsa! From one who used to be in food bus in SF, I think you would find this restaurant blog about the diners entertaining, especially regarding free bread:

If you think cgfan has any affiliation based on his enthusiastic Kaito reviews, you should check out his coffee fanaticism, you would think he owns a coffee empire in Costa Rica!

I am one of the people you must be referring too.... $150 is not the norm, exilekiss can obviously eat quite a bit. There is no set omakase menu, he stops when you want him to stop. I have even heard of some customers being able to eat up to $300 per person. So Honkman, you have been on CH long enough and never tried Kaito, what's stopping you? Where is your favorite sushi spot in SD anyway?

Wow exilekiss, you can really put it away!! 9 pairs of sushi, 2 plates of sashimi, anago tempura and oysters and buta!! Great review!

San Diego - coleslaw without mayonnaise

Pelly's Fish Market in Carlsbad has this kind of coleslaw, it's pretty good too, I am sure they would sell you that much if you give them some notice.

Which wich to open in carlsbad

I tried WW too, for me it was a hell of a lot better than Panera! What we really need in North County is a Vietnamese sandwich shop.

Sushi-Kaito vs Sakura vs Shirahama?

Ha! No need to duck, everyone has an opinion!

San Diego recs.

For me, the way Urasawa stands apart from the rest is the same way Kaito sands out from the rest in San Diego, just my opinion. Morita-san has Hiro-san's same strive for perfection and simplicity in his use of ingredients and execution. Otherwise Hiro-san's conservative Kyoto style kaiseki vs. Morita-san's Edo style sushi are wildly different experiences. Morita-san is going get things for me that no one in San Diego is getting. Treats that are not likely to turn up at Urasawa, maybe too pedestrian or not refined enough, e.g. eel bones, fish hearts, bloodlines, sea pineapples, barracuda etc... Hiro-san has prepared the most amazing meal I have ever had so far, but Morita-san has opened my eyes to a world that Hiro-san cannot show me at Urasawa. The pride, respect and unending pursuit for absolute perfection is evident in both of these itamaes, traits held by seemingly too few in the culinary world these days.

San Diego recs.

I know cgfan, he's no shill, he's just a regular customer usually waiting for my seat at the bar! If I could go three times a week like him I would jump at the chance. You never have the same dinner twice here, Morita-san always has something up his sleeve!

San Diego recs.

Exilekiss, I have followed your great posts of LA sushi bars for some time now, I think you need to go to Kaito. Ota is not going to do anything for you that you cannot get in LA already. Let me put it this way, the only reason I don't return to Urasawa right now it's not because of the cost, it's that I have found a chef with Hiro-san's perfection right here in SD. Morita-san keeps me so excited about his food, I am hopelessly addicted. Get there early and maybe you can beat me to that fresh katsuo heart!

3 favorite S.D. chefs

Chef Sam Malhotra - Curry and More (San Marcos)
Chef Nakai - Yumeya (Leucadia)

SD / LJ: Review my choices

Same opinion here: Kaito for sushi.

San Diego recs.

For me Sakura is not a sushi shop, sushi is a very small portion of what they do. That being said, the sushi has always been good, but the selection is so much more limited than Kaito. You may see more Japanese customers at Sakura, but I see more Japanese chefs eating at Kaito if that's any indication of quality.

Latin Chef is half the price and none of the Qero attitude.

Burger Lounge now open in Little Italy San Diego

Maybe Which Wich opening soon in the old Chuao deterred Counter? I bet El Torito is sighing with relief with Casa de Bandini's horrid food reviews and antifreeze margaritas. No way that place is going to make it with that food and those prices, never mind the killer rent they must be paying.

Kaito... a question (San Diego)

We always get something cooked. Recently the whole fried baby sole has been outstanding. I also enjoy my braised or roasted fish heads... madai, kinmedai and kurodai. Kaito is very relaxed, I always feel like I am at home there, I think Mr. Geeky might too.

E.C.R., Grubby's, now Big Red Pizza

Big Red, less is more, way too much cheese, the crust is better than average. Far better than old Grubbo's. The cursed location lives on...
