"Rules" at Central Grocery
Couldn't agree more - I have seen rudeness on occassion, but frankly it was warranted & I dare say I would have difficulty abstaining from a comment or two, were I in their place.
Quick Surrey''s Review
yes, counter, inside & outside - this refers to the mag. st. locale only
Quick Boucherie Review
Agree completely - their price point is incredibly attractive, but add $8 per entree, the crowds disappear rather quickly
Quick Surrey''s Review
Orange juice 10/10 - $13 for a caraffe? a little high, but damn tasty - extremely sweet, almost tasted like a pineapple jucie had been blended in
Banana pancake 1.5/10 - no, just no, batter undercooked - raw in parts, faint banana flavor - edges good, cause i like me some crispy - overall a pretty terrible pancake
Corned beef hash 9.5/10 - andouille, corned beef & boudin w/ potatos - awesome - so meaty, VERY flavorful - great all the way around
Fried chicken special 8.5/10 - cornmeal crusted, perfectly cooked - covered in a white, pepper gravy with eggs - very filling, hearty breakfast - would order again
CostaRican breakfast 9/10 - another winner - ripe avocado, blackbeans, brown rice, pico de gallo - very flavorful, very filling - a breakfast i could eat every day
Overall 8.5/10 - overall, great food, pancake not withstanding - if i lived near, I would be a regular @ breakfast
Quick Boucherie Review
Pimms cup 9/10 - delicious, refreshing, fresh basil, cucumber, lemon - nicely done
Boudin balls 9.5/10 - best thing of the night, by a long shot - served hot & crispy with a garlic aioli for dipping - very, very good - boudin itself was nice and spicy
Blackened shrimp & grit cake 3/10 - shrimp was over blackened (seasoned), slightly overcooked, the grit cake needed seasoning
Parmesan fries 6.5/10 - did not live up to expectations - not "elevated" like truffle fries, or if they were cooked in duck fat - just decent
Wagyu brisket 7.5/10 - tender, tasty but overrated - i dont give a damn if its wagyu or not, its brisket - give me 3 dollar per pound brisket, let me slow cook it, it will be just as good - nothing transcendent about it - good sauce though
Sea scallops 2/10 - asian fusion at its worst - poorly seared, not great texture - oatmeal/chili risotto (as bad as it sounds), sitting in a chili oil - yeah, not good - no seasoning on anything, just bad
Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding 3/10 - quick explaination of dish, donuts, cream, eggs, oven - capiche??
Thai Chili Chocolate Chess Pie 4.5/10 - better than the bread pudding, buttermilk pie texture, not enough chocolate flavor - nice to have a little spice lingering on the palate, very one-note
Decent prices, I mean, I'd prefer to pay more & have better food, but...
Nice enough atmosphere, somewhat crowded with the table arrangment, but cozy, good bartender.
Overall 4.5/10
Not worth a trip back in a city with great food.

Heading to New Orleans next week Thursday!
"Coop's is a great NOLA dive joint that serves outstanding comfort food and cold drinks. You can also watch the game there on their many TV's." - am I missing something? The 3 or 4 times I've been there, I've never noticed anything more than a 22 inch tube tv close to the bar. Is there some hidden sports bar in Coops, good for TV watching that I've missed?
Alligator..........
believe that ralph & kacoo's has both blackened and fried alligator - same @ Felix's - also @ Mulates, but...no thanks
large group..casual atmosphere...loud...need help
If Commanders Palace is overly formal, so to is Restaurant August. Mr. B's would be a fine place for lunch - it is not a quiet place & has a couple of cant miss items on the menu. The food at K-Pauls, while fine, is definately a pass for me. For that price point, there is def. better to be had. NOLA in the fq is the loudest of the Emeril's establishments. The food is pretty good, and you wouldnt feel out of place being boisterous. Enjoy your time in the city!
Delivery pizza Garden District
Staying @ the worldmark on St. Charles Ave. - with child in-tow. Which "non-chain" pizza places will deliver? Which are best? TIA
Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!
For huge seafood fans, GW Fins is an excellent choice. Menu changes daily & is always filled with the freshest fish in New Orleans.
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
thanks for your thoughts - i'll definately pass this information along - my friends 4 year old daughter is exceptionally behaved - but come to think of it, during my visits, i've never seen children dining there
In terms of the Casamento's/Emeril's, I think they are wanting to hit the $20 lunch deal @ Emeril's, because they are somewhat budget conscious & they were going to hitch a ride to Casamento's on the Magazine St. bus after going to the zoo
Long weekend in New Orleans
Brigtsen's has many excellent choices - their rabbit & andouille gumbo & sweetbreads app are my fav. for starters - for mains, I usually default to the roast duck or pork tenderloin & for desert its an especially tough choice - pecan pie, banana bread pudding & strawberry shortcake are all show stoppers
Long weekend in New Orleans
Cochon Butcher is a solid choice for Saturday lunch - good sandwiches, mac&cheese, charcuterie- for dinner, I would consider Brigtsen's - you can take the St. Charles SC Line out to Carrollton and hoof it 3 blocks from there - its definately a unique dining experience to New Orleans, and worth the trip - for something casual for sunday, i'd do Parkway Bakery & Tavern - take the Canal St. car to Jeff. Davis Pkwy - its about 4-5 blocks to the NE to Hagan - turkey & alligator sausage gumbo, fries w/ cheese/debri, all varieties of poboys - good choice for many tastes
Superior Grill?
Ok, so sounds like the general consensus is that Superior Grill is a fine place to meet people & have a margarita, but in terms of food, no real revelations - great to know.
i'll check out Taqueria Corona - every once in a while, while in the city, I get a hankering for this sort of thing - thanks again!
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
Edible - never been to J'Anitas - tell me a little bit about it (specifics about the st. chuck duck wouldnt hurt) :)
Superior Grill?
interesting...not familiar with veracruz"ian" food - regional mexican cuisine, when done right in my experience is worth going out of the way for
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
saw this boudreaux talked about elsewhere - sounds delicious...a garlicky cochon pizza? yes please
Superior Grill?
uptown, specifically, which latin american cuisines are represented @ Sarita's/Panchita's?
Superior Grill?
Thoughts on this establishment? Haven't seen much on on the board about this place...obviously, its not "native" cuisine. As far as mexican, err, tex-mex what are peoples opinions? El gato negro? juan's flying burrito? felipe's taqueria? Thanks again.
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
great rec's - i think dante's would be an excellent suggestion & I dont think there is another on his itinerary that is "really" similar - it is "out there", by brigtsens - not sure he wants to make that trek twice
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
I've been to snug harbor for jazz a bunch - never have had a bite there - cool suggestion
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
Never tried Buffa's, but have heard that its consistant - good suggestion, i'll in turn suggest that he consider it if PoC is a bust
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
Great thoughts - thank you - will definately pass them along - primary modes of transport will be feet, st. charles street car line, magazine st. bus - never thought about port of call being a potential problem - will it be too wild for them on a friday night? he just wants to fit in a burger at somepoint, because his daughter is a big fan
Quick thoughts on this Itinerary - much thanks
Have a friend going down to New Orleans in early March & I do not want to lead him astray. These are his thoughts on an itinerary, and he'd like some advice, other than mine. Feel free to change places as you see fit. He will not have a car, and will be staying at the Hampton Inn in the garden district. He prefers to eat only lunch and dinner while on vacation & would like to experience a variety of what New Orleans has to offer. He will be traveling with his wife and 4 year old daughter (who is a reasonably adventurous eater, and is very well behaved).
Here is what he has thusfar:
Mon. dinner - Joey K's
Tues. lunch - Cochon Butcher
Tues. dinner - Domenica
Wed, lunch - Mahoney's Po Boys
Wed. dinner - Brigtsen's
Thurs. lunch - Emeril's
Thurs. dinner - Casamento's
Fri. lunch - Coquette
Fri. dinner - Port of Call
Sat. lunch - Mr. B's Bistro
Sat. dinner- unplanned
Early flight out on Sunday
Thanks again for your invaluable advice.

Just did 17 Gumbos in 4 days
wow, now that you mention it...it really does - any chance they use masa or maseca as a thickener?? is that even possible?
Quick question, grocery stores
disregard my previous question - too lazy to google map? doesn't deserve a response
Quick question, grocery stores
thanks montuori - great to get a suggestion of something i've never heard of (breaux mart, not steins) - also thanks for the heads up on the avenue pub - sounds like a good way to spend an afternoon
