Wilmington, VT?

Thanks! I read about Dot's somewhere else on Chow. Not food-related, but is there a good place to let my dog run for a bit?

Oh glorious day! Oh wonderful year! Oh lucky me! I finally, finally, finally get to host Thanksgiving. I banish thee jarred gravy (tell me about your single favorite dish)

Several years ago, my mom broke from the traditional sweet potato recipe and made Maple-Glazed Yams with Pecan Topping. We had already left the marshmallow sweet potatoes in the dust for the cornflake, pecan, brown sugar version, but these are so delicious!

We also have two unusual stuffings...a meat-based one with ground beef, pork, onion, bread, poultry seasoning, etc and scalloped oyster stuffing. When we were young, we would have been happy to skip the turkey and just have stuffing. :-) Most people find it too odd.

Oatmeal rolls! Mmmmm!

Pies are usually apple and chocolate pecan. If we have a large group, we pile on more desserts.

Driving from Stamford, CT to Portland, ME and have no plans whatsoever

No worries! :) I don't live in Portsmouth. I'm all the way over on the other side of northern NH, but I travel a lot and love exploring my native New England. I love each and every New England state. Maine is probably my least explored state unfortunately. I haven't been north of Boothbay Harbor, and I definitely want to take my camera over to Acadia. It's calling me! :D

Wilmington, VT?

Headed to the Wilmington area this weekend, and I know nothing about southern Vermont. Any "musts" in this area?

I actually agree with you and wouldn't suggest Portsmouth in place of actual mid to northern coastal Maine if we weren't headed into the middle of October.

I suggest making Portsmouth your seaside town destination. Check out scenic waterfront Prescott Park and Market Square: locally owned shops, great restaurants with a water view, narrow streets, tree-lined streets with brick sidewalks and historic homes. It's a short ride to Maine beaches. For restaurants try Oar House, River House or Portsmouth Brewery, etc. We always stop at Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery when we're in the area.

Pumpkin Festival Keene, NH

I haven't been to the Pumpkin Festival yet, but I'm hoping to go this year. I really like Luca's Mediterranean Cafe in Keene.
