Roasted Duck Heads

I love the tongues too. The heads sound intriguing. There's always surprise bags at the market! Deinitely gonna give them a go next time.

korean market

Koreana Market (next to Churchill). It's a pretty well-stocked market, comparable to Arirang.

Soy paper in Calgary?

Sorry, it's called mamenori. It comes in different colors and some have sesame seeds in it. It looks like wrapping paper. I think I may have to just order it online.

Soy paper in Calgary?

Does anyone know where I can get soy paper in Calgary? I haven't seen any sushi places in the area using it, so I figure it's probably hard to come by here. Thanks in advance!

Tempeh in Calgary

You can get tempeh from the organic section of Superstore or at T&T. You can also find it in the freezer section at the Asian grocery on 17 ave SE. (used to be called Shun Fat) If you never tried it, you'll find it's a nice change from tofu. A lot firmer with a definite mushroom-like flavour.

Found Umami Paste No. 5 in Saskatoon!

They do keep a few in stock, but there's no specific place for it. Usually, they keep them on the table with the jars of preserves and foodie gift items.

I'm popping over there before I catch my plane. Hopefully there will be a couple tubes left.

What's up with this place (Calgary)?

Margaret sold the land and she is now at Kingsland Farmers Market, selling her soup and sandwiches.

Pho in Saskatoon?

So far, I have been to Spicy Garden on 8th St. and Thien Vietnam on 3rd Ave. Neither were served with the sprouts, basil and lime and they didn't have the hoisin and sriracha. Of the 2, Spicy Garden had the better broth. Spicy Garden has limited seating, so it's tough to get in during lunch.

Found Umami Paste No. 5 in Saskatoon!

By the looks of it, it would be a great addition to stews, soups, sauces or braised meats. I have heard others that tried it that it brings a lot of depth to the flavours. It would be fun to experiment for sure.

what are you making today?

I will be doing a buffalo or musk ox curry and serving it up "Bunny Chow" style. I still have plenty of ramen broth leftover from last month's ramen project and I froze a couple batches of alkaline noodles. I should be eating more than cooking, but I just love it so much. I guess I just have to entertain more often.

I was there a couple days ago, but alas, I left empty-handed. Have you had the opportunity to try it out yet?

new Asahi Black beer - where to find in Vancouver

As of October, in Calgary, I was able to pick some up from the restaurant I work at. They were brought in to try out from our supplier. I paid about 2.30/btl.

Matsutake in Calgary

I found out what they cost. The plate in the pic is $50. And you can get them when they are in season from Sushi Bar Zipang.

Los Tortillas in NE Calgary

The tacos (pic attached) are delicious. They also have tamales if you are there early enough. They start the tacos at about noon, but they sell out of the tamales fast. I haven't had tamales like this since I lived in TX.

Calgary Farmers market

Gull Valley tomatoes and the coffee from Phil & Sebastian Coffee Co. As you can see, Farmers Market is a great start to a Sunday.

Matsutake in Calgary

Can anyone tell me what the price of a plate of matsutake like this would cost in the restaurant? I was working last night and I saw these being plated up and took a pic. I know they vary depending on the quality, that much I know. Thanks!

Southern Style Fried Chicken in Calgary

Red Tree, eh? I have to check that out. My current fave for fried chicken right now is Chicken on the Way. I also wish there was a Popeye's in Calgary. And yes, Roscoe's is the best! Chicken and waffles with a side of collard greens...mmm

Sushi in the YYC

I second Jigga. Sushi Bar Zipang is excellent. Reservation recommended. I also agree with Shikiji, and I would like to add Wa's on Centre Street near 16th Ave.

As for my least favorites: Sakana Village, Sumo, Edo Ichiban
