New Jew in Town

I am new to Houston and still settling in with markets and restaurants etc

Right now I need some advice on where to purchase key Jewish ingredients. Clearly, I do not live in Meyerland or maybe I might have happened upon the correct spot

Where can I buy rendered chicken fat?

also was not able to find Prune Lekvar for hamentaschen season, anywhere I might be able to find this and possible apricot butter too?

Rendered Chicken Fat?

Passover is coming, and it is time to start looking for the key ingredients for Seder in a new City. Can anyone help me find good rendered chicken fat in LA or the SGV? I am near Pasadena, so on the east side is preferable . . . but will travel for good fat. Thanks

Prune Butter?

so, purim time in 2010 and just wanted to thank you all for this post from last year - struck out on the eastside trying to find lekvar at whole foods or gelson's but per you recs confirmed that Jons in Glendale has it and will zip by there tomorrow evening. And learned from a friend that his family source is C & K importing (aka "the greek") in LA. Happy Purim to all.

Dinner in South Pas?

Thank you all, your help is much appreciated as I slowly explore my way through the restaurant and food scene here . . . I don't have the same foodie community here that I did in New York, so I a appreciate being able to join yours. I hope someday I might be able to help with something too, but right now I am just new and mostly asking for help.

Dinner in South Pas?

I am meeting a date in South Pasadena for dinner tonight, I have read about a couple of spots - Firefly, Shiro . . . but don't see alot of chatter about them on chowhound. Wondering what your opinions are on good dinner spots in South Pas for two people who appreciate a good meal of any kind.

Monday dinner near LAX?

Went to cafe del rey with my family (see dinner near LAX with out of towners previously sited.

It was a wonderful meal, a had a good range for my entire party. Thank you westsidegal for the original recommendation, and though I was warned about traffic getting there etc, it was very easy and fast. And though I do not recall exactly how long our meal took, I feel like it would be doable in the 3 hours window.

Good LA meal for out of towner's nearish to LAX

excellent point - I am just getting used to having a car (moved from NYC,) let alone parking it and traffic etc etc.

I was leaning towards Cafe del Rey anyhow, this may seal the deal.

Good LA meal for out of towner's nearish to LAX

Thank you all for your many great recommendations. I know the idea of being at LAX at 5:30 is painful, but I trust that one of these meals will free us of that stress and allow everyone to relax and enjoy a nice long meal so that we can drive anywhere by meal's end. (and next time maybe I can convince my family to avoid LAX in favor of Burbank and avoid rush hour arrivals.)

Leaning towards Cafe del Rey for right now, but still need to look over some your other recs. I will post how we make out. My land locked sister and her meat and potatoes husband appreciate your help as well.

Good LA meal for out of towner's nearish to LAX

I am new to the LA area, actually live out in SGV, but my extended family is coming in in a couple of weeks - arriving at LAX at 5:30 on Friday. So, rather than waste many hours in traffic driving them out to pasadena, thought we should take advantage and have a nice dinner in the area, maybe take a walk on the pier or something.

Sister from Colorado - so always happy to get seafood when near the coast
Brother in law - meat and potatoes kinda guy, but has been able to tolerate many a foodie
adventure with my family
Father - from NYC, will try anything once, getting older so biggest restaurant problem is too much noise.

Was thinking California style but up for anything worth it
possible celebrity sittings might be fun for them but never at the expense of food quality
price range 50+ per person or so.

your help on this mater and all of the other advice I gather from reading the board in general is much appreciated
