Anyone know where to get salt cod in the Boston area?
Costco in Everett had a lot of it in the fish case earlier this week.
What are you baking these days? May 2012
Her pictures are pretty, though. I just wonder if they ever really try out the recipes.
What are you baking these days? May 2012
I just had a disappointing day of baking cooks from Martha Stewart's "Cookies". I made the chocolate/black-pepper cookies, to which my husband responded "meh", rum raisin shortbread - crumbly and greasy, and peanut and jelly bars that were nothing special. I may give the book to the local library sale.
Lunch near Mt. Auburn Cemetary? Cambridge, Watertown area?
Go down Mt. Auburn St., into Cambridge to the Charles Hotel. There's garage parking and Legal Seafoods or Henrietta's Table for lunch - both pleasant places for lunch.
Searching for breast of veal
All done - veal was okay - I wasn't wild about the recipe I chose from Epicurious. Thanks, all.
Farmer's Cheese - what is it? And what to do with it?
Grew up with the stuff. I like it simply on good toasted bread with salt and pepper. My mother used to serve it to us when we were home sick from school mixed into egg noodles with a dollop of sour cream and cinnamon, sugar.
Searching for breast of veal
FYI - after lots of phone call and getting prices quoted, ranging from $10.99/lb, down to $2.49/lb, IF a store even carried it, I found beautiful cryovac'ed veal breasts at the Chelsea Market Basket for the lowest price around. They seem to keep it in stock there.
Vegetarian pita pocket ideas
Hummus and cherry tomatoes or hummus and cole slaw (not mayonnaise-y type) are favorites around here.
Searching for breast of veal
Does anyone have any thoughts on where to get a breast of veal with pocket for stuffing - somewhere near Cambridge, Somerville, Medford, Malden?
Help with Italian dessert
I'm searching for reasonably authentic Italian desserts that can be served at a buffet dinner - preferably finger-friendly. I'd like to avoid the obvious - cannoli, tiramisu (not too finger-friendly, as well) and find something that is not too challenging to make and can sit at room temp. for a while.
TIA -
Irish soda bread from Harvest Restaurant
Years ago, Harvest Restaurant in Cambridge, MA served an amazing soda bread with currants as part of their bread basket. Does anyone have the recipe?
Diabetic cookie recipes?
I just made a batch of rugelach for my diabetic MIL. I make the standard dough - flour, butter, cream cheese, and use all-fruit apricot preserves and a nut/cinnamon/raisin mix with Splenda. Nobody notices the difference!
ISO plum jam; also, apricot jam prefs?
If you're near a Christmas Tree Shop they often have a good selection of Trappist jams. You can never count on finding just what you want, but can find some good surprises there.
Chestnut Peeling
I just finished trying to peel two dozen of those suckers. I spent 1 1/2 hrs., got maybe 8 whole chestnuts and a lot of crumbled stuff. Oh, well, it's hidden under the braised red cabbage. I had planned to use some precooked ones from TJs, but the packaging looked funky (I admit - I had them in the cupboard from last year) and tossed the whole box. Had some fresh ones in the fridge, so, although it was a pain, I was able to finish the dish.
Brilliant ideas for a whole head of red cabbage?
Braised red cabbage with chestnuts is yummy - here's a link to a good recipe:

Not feeling the high price point.....
He was wonderful at Marcuccio's, but I think even better at Erbaluce. We celebrated our anniversary there in May and had a meal that we still talk about months later.

which BOS location is the BEST of Legal Seafoods Chain??
Went to Kendall last night and had soft-shell crabs, which were deep fried, a bit too long. They were served over arugula/potato/ bacon salad which I thought was too rich. Everyone else had the fried fisherman platter, which was fine. Cups of chowder for apps were TINY. Not going back anytime soon.
coleslaw (non-mayo)
An old recipe from Epicurious speaks summer to me and goes great with barbecue.
1 medium head of cabbage, finely shredded
3-4 carrots, grated
1 onion, finely shredded
1 red pepper, choppped - make sure to drain water, if you use a food processer
s & p to taste - i use a lot of pepper and a pretty healthy amount of salt
Vinaigrette -
2/3 cup vegetable oli, 1/3 c white vinegar, 3 tbs. sugar
Mix all together - with hands is fun!!!!
Ideas for Bluefish?
I mix equal parts of mayonnaise and dijon mustard, slather on the top and bake it in a hot oven. Yum.
Cuban Dessert
I made a Tres Leche cake (recipe from Epicurious) last week for a party. I think it's actually better when it sits overnight allowing the flavors to mellow. I made fresh whipped cream and served it with cut up berries and it was the hit of the evening.
Latin American quiz...
So, now I need good recipes for a Tres Leche cake and for alfajores... any ideas? Mucho gracias.
Latin American recs for catering/take-out Camb.,Som., Everett, Malden, Chelsea, E. Boston
I'm looking for classy supplements for Latin-American dinner party - NOT Mexican. Recommendations for where I can find good foods from Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, etc. would be best.
TIA.
Unique, cool, unusual pizza toppings
These are our current faves -
Carameiized onions, sun-dried tomatoes and goat chese.
Maple-syrup roasted butternut squash, cut in small pieces, gorgonzola, topped with fresh arugula
Artichoke hearts, pesto, feta, parmesan
Canned Vegetables Leading to bad habits…..What are they thinking?
When visiting my first MIL in the early 70s, she asked me to put the broccoli on to cook about 1/2 hour before she arrived home to begin preparing the rest of the dinner. That alone should have warned me off the family.
the lowly meatloaf sandwich
Cold or room temp., lots of catsup, and topped with thinly sliced kosher dills on rye or wheat toast. This is the ONLY good food advice I got from my first MIL.
What do you like in a state other than its "proper" one? Frozen rather than chilled? Stale rather than fresh? etc.
Slightly stale mallomars.

Fresh Peeps aren't worth the trouble. Stale makes them a treat.
