Near the Biltmore, Providence

Thanks so much for all the info. We will look into all your suggestions.

Near the Biltmore, Providence

My husband and I will be spending a weekend in Providence soon for the first time. We want to park the car and either walk or take a short cab ride. Looking for recommendations for Friday night , american, french, near the hotel for dinner and after spending the morning on Sat touring Federal Hill, a great place for lunch. We like fine dining but casual places, and often sit at the bar for our meals. Any rercommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

First time to St. Croix! <yet another post requesting good island food>

Hi This is BABS from above. I still recommend all that I did in my previous post but would also like to at EAT @ Cane Bay. Great view of the beach, food and drinks. Watch out for the cute dark haired bartender with the bandana. He will hustle you at dice games but makes the BEST drinks. This past March we had the most wonderful dinner at Bachus. We highly recommend it. And do make surre that you go to the Domino Club in the rainforrest. Norma's place with the NA Beer drinking pigs. Try some of her johnny cakes with the homemade honey based hot sauce. And her fried chicken is to die for. Oh, and don't forget to try the Manna Wanna, she makes it herself. Onn the road back from Cane Bay (right on the corner) there is a place called Rowdy Joe's. It's a little gem. Very electic menu, very good and homemade ice cream. If you like specialty cocktails, be sure to try Salud. Sit and the bar, and if it isn't soo crowded the BT will chat with you and make you a great, special drink. I never knew there were so many different flavors of bitters. There will be lots of fun activities during Christmas week, hope you enjoy it. And by the way, my favorite island handcrafted jewelry store is IB Designs. Say hi to Kris and Whealon.

Appetizer Ham Biscuits / Brown Sugar Filling

This is an appetizer I often make to rave reviews.

Marinated Ham Swiss Buns
cup butter (2 sticks)
1/4 cup sweet onion, minced
2 tablespoons poppy seeds
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons hot or spicy mustard
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
24 2 inch dinner roll
horseradish mayonaise
3/4 pound thin sliced deli ham, 24 slices
1/2 pound thin sliced Swiss cheese, 24 slices

1. Line two 9x13 baking pans with foil or buttter them.

2. To prepare maridade, saute minced onion in butter over low heat until onion is soft and translucent. Add poppy seeds, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and brown sugar. Stir until brown sugar is melted into the sauce. Remove from heat and stir in parsley. Set marinade aside.

3. Slice the buns in half. Spread bottoms of buns with a thin layer of horseradish mayonnaise. Fold ham slices to fit the bottom of each bun. Repeat with Swiss cheese slices, folding to fit buns. Replace bun tops. Place ham and cheese buns into prepared baking pans. Pour marinade evenly over both pans of buns. Cover tightly with foil. Refrigerate overnight.

4. Preheat over to 350 degrees. Bake marinated buns covered for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an aditional 10 minutes.
Yield: 24

Notes: You may use large yeast hot dog rolls, cut into thirds. You may have to adjust the baking time. I made 30 sandwiches with the same amount of marinade and used 1 pound of ham and 3/4 pound of cheese. I used rosemary sun dried tomato deli ham. Made my own horseradish mayonnaise.

Side Dish for Muffelatta's [moved from New Orleans]

thank you all. I did make the pralines and most everyone, at least the sweet lovers, enjoyed them. We served the sandwich with the chips as suggested

First time to St. Croix! <yet another post requesting good island food>

You will love St. Croix. We go there every March. There is not a restaurant near the airport. But if you are staying at Tamarind Reef, you can eat right there at the Deep End. If Kenna is the bartender tell her hello from Barb and Joe from CT. You can also go a little past the access road to Tamarind, turn to the left and will be at Cheeseburgers in Paradise. Eat in or take out.
I agree with the other poster on their suggestions. Would add Bacchus, downtown, for an upscale meal, Savant also. If you want to mingle with locals, good inexpensive food also try No Bones Cafe. It is in Gallows Bay, behind Sharkey's Sports Bar. Also Pickeled Greek for a fun time, maybe some greek dancing and good greek fare.
Have a great honeymoon and congrats on your marriage.

Side Dish for Muffelatta's [moved from New Orleans]

Thanks you all, think I will do the green salad, artichoke, vinegrette suggestion. But I would also love to serve a praline for dessert. Not enough time, or money to order, but would appreciate a recipe that I could make at home.
thank you all

Side Dish for Muffelatta's [moved from New Orleans]

We are making traditional muffelatta's for about 40 people later this week in our VFW canteen in Connecticut. I would appreciate suggestions for a side dish to accompany them.
Thanks

Need Wallingford, CT restaurant recommendation - going to concert at the Oakdale Theatre afterwards

Michaels, a great choice, is not open on Sundays, Neither is Fratelli's or Tata's which are also very good. However, right in to center of town, at cross of Main and Center, in Simpson's court is Half Moon Cafe. Great food, light or hearty meals, great pizza. BYOB also. Kind of funky, you order and pay at the counter then are served your meals at your table. They will take reservations for a table.
Enjoy your show.

I found this at the farmers market and planted 4 of them. They have grown like crazy and now need first harvesting. I am not sure what to do with the fragrant and spicy herb. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Matunuck, RI and surrounding areas

Matnuck Oyster Bar is great, but do also go to Tara's Joyce Family Pub, right on the beach while you are there. Irish pub food, a la american, great people, right on the beach. Music every night. Always a party.

I made these Paula Dean beans just Thuraday forn 40 people to accompany a pulled pork sandwich. I doubled it for 40. Everyone love it. I did cut back on the molasses so not to make it too sweeet.

Martin's on the River, new owner!

Glad to hear. Martin's was a favorite of ours. Now if only the new restaurant owner would honor gift certs from Martin's. Between friends and us we have several.

Nice lunch between Grand Central and MSG

We will be seeing 101 Dalmations on Sat at MSG. Arriving on train to Grand Central. We would like a nice lunch (upscale American food) convenient to the walk between the two spots. 4 adults, no kids, we just like dogs. Thanks in advance.

Sauce for Beef Wellington

We made Tyler's beef wellington with the green peppersauce for Christmas and it was wonderful. Also served his wilted greens from the same episode. All our guests loved the dinner.

7 days in Narragansett...where to eat??

We stayed this summer at the Ocean Rose Inn right on Ocean Avenue. There is a wonderful restaurant in the Inn called Tutle Soup. We enjoyed two dinners there. We also had a great dinner at the Italian restaurant at the Holiday Inn on Tower Road in So. Kingston (about 10 minutes from center Narragansette). I think the name is Aleia's. The breaded swordfish is very special and they make their own house salad dressing that we all thought was wonderful.
Also had a good breakfast and a fun lunch at Crazy Burgers. We also had apps (great chowder) and drinks at the bar in Trio. There's a wonderful farm stand a little down the road, Carpenters, on Matunick Beach Road. Enjoy your Vacation.

"Holy Basil"

I have a very lush Holy Basil plant ready to be harvested. I am looking for suggestions on what to make with it. Thanks in advance.

Good restaurants in St Croix?

We have been going to (and enjoying) Tutto Bene (Everything Good) for many years since it was downtown and owned by Tony. About 10 years ago Tony passed away and the employees purchased the restaurant. About 5 years ago they moved out of town a bit to bigger quarters. The food is always consistently good, large portions, great wine and cocktails, good bar crowd too. And after dinner, if you mention Tony they will bring you complimentary sambucca as Tony always did.

Your favorite BBQ sauce

I have 2 favorites:
Soy Vey "Veri'Veri" Teriyaki
Jonathan "Q" BBQ sauces
Love them both, very versatile and yummy

Hamden CT. Restaurant

My husband and I love Martin's Riverside on the New Haven line. Lovely riverview from the deck. Short distance off Exit 8 (Montowese Ave) on Rt. 91.
We have eaten there several times and have brought lots of friends. We are always pleased.

Good restaurants in St Croix?

Hello Again,
We just returned from our trip to St. Croix. Food at the Pickled Greek was great so please try it. One new thing we did this year was attend 2 cooking classes by a great French Chef, Daniel Theme. Lots of fun, great food and met nice people. I believe he is starting new sessions mid April. Classes are held in a wonderful spot, high on Seven Hills overlooking the ocean. Check out his website at Chef-Daniel.com. You can also call him or Therese at 340-778-2329. I highly recommend if the classes ar happening when you are there to give it a try. Both my husband and I really enjoyed ourselves.

Looking for post-graduation Hartford Restaurant

We have eaten twice lately (after Huskie Womens Games) at J Restaurant and Bar on Washington Street (right across from entrance to Children's Medical Center. Both times we had excellent meals and service. Decor is contemporary and lovely. They are open all day on Sunday. www.jrestaurantbar.com

Signatures Waterbury CT- anyone been?

Six of us went there two Saturday nights ago. As there were 2 Uconn games on that night, we sat at the bar. We all had different appetizers and shared. All were wonderful. Nice salad, very fresh and crisp. We also shared 3 desserts and they two were great. Lovely space, nice staff. We will go again soon for dinner.

Good restaurants in St Croix?

Congratulations on your marriage. You will love St. Croix. We have been going there for almost 20 years. Our favorite s are out of town so you would need a car. In the rainforest, The Domino Club. Everybody loves Norma and she makes the best fried chicken and johnny cakes. The beer drinking pigs there are also worth a look. Music there on Sunday afternoons.
In the St. Croix Marina area, No Bones Cafe. On the main road out east, try The Pickled Greek. It is new this year but the owner, Peter has bartended for years at The Deep End Bar (also out east) has great ocean view and always fun folks to chat with at the bar. And of course don't miss Cheeseburgers in Paradise. Enjoy the island.
