Good fish fry mid Hudson area?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good fish fry place around Saugerties, Catskill, Kingston, New Paltz area? I grew up near Albany and was a regular at Ted's Fish Fry but looking for something more local - is there anything??

Cookery lessons in NYC

I would recommend the Institute of Culinary Education http://www.iceculinary.com/
I have taken both professional and recreational classes there. You can focus in on a certain cuisine if you would like and choose multiple 1day or 1 evening courses. Also, if you are a bit more comfortable in the kitchen and want to strengthen your skills then look at the Techniques courses where you can go 1 evening or day a week for several weeks or go one day a weekend for several weekends or do it intensive and go full day five days a week if you have the time. Also, if you are interested in cheese, I would recommend looking at Murrays Cheese site http://www.murrayscheese.com/edu_main.asp and seeing what classes they are offering when you are in NYC. Their Bootcamp is excellent and you cannot beat the location (above the cheese shop, in the West Village). Have great time in NYC!

3+ days in wine country - will my plan work??

I didn't see this until well, well after the trip (stating the obvious). We were there April 26th and 27th. Did a few wineries - really enjoyed Stags Leap and I was surprised at how much I like some of their whites. We were able to get reservations at the French Laundry which did not disappoint. I am still thinking about how they do some of the things they do. Had a lovely lunch in Sonoma at the Girl and the Fig and another good pizza lunch at Tra Vigne in Napa which was quite nice. I really enjoyed the Gaige House. Peter, one of the concierges, was amazingly helpful to us. The weather was not the best to use the pool or the outdoor patios but the property was lovely, I thought. I hope you enjoyed your visit.

nycreba - a funny coincidence if you will be staying at the Gaige House April 26th/27th. I don't know enough about Napa/Sonoma to make good suggestions but one of my friends who is more the know than I really recommends Merry Edwards. I hope you enjoy your trip ..... I am really look forward to mine!

Zapp's Potato Chips

Skip checking Dean and Deluca. I was there last night and they only had 3 bags of Salt and Vinegar. They used to carry more and a larger variety of flavors so maybe they are no longer going to carry Zapps.

Zapp's Potato Chips

I have seen them at Dean and Deluca in Soho. Last time I was there and saw them was probably in December.

Is Momofuko Milk Bar worth a second chance?

I live in the neighborhood so not a strecth to get there but I went one Sunday morning and sampled the cornflake/marshmallow cookie and the compost cookie to very mediocre results. I gave some extras to friends on Monday morning to very average to below average reviews. I also sampled the Volcano which seemingly has all the ingredients worth living for - bacon, potato and gruyere but it was greasy and leaden. Did I pick a bad time or day? I would assume a place focused on baked goods would be baking early morning and daily so what happened?

50 Best Dishes in New York

I third the Barney Greengrass recommendation - their Sable and Whitefish salad is a total hit with my family every Christmas morning. I also love the whitefish salad at Russ and Daughters which I think has some baked salmon mixed in with it. Delicious!

Need pre theater restaurant. Theater is at 48th, twn 6th/7th. this Friday

I also like DB Bistro for pre-theater in that area. If you can do a 6pm reservation and tell them you have tickets, they can get you in and out in plenty of time without feeling rushed.

East Village/L.E.S., Entrees under $20, Less than 2 yrs old

Forgive me. I have no idea when this place opened but I like Alias restaurant on the LES is very good and will probably fit the bill for you. Well prepared food at decent prices with friendly service and a great fresh whiskey sour! I hade the duck leg confit appetizer and the upstate chicken entree which was big enough to take some home for lunch the next day and it inspired me to leave a little skin in my next kabocha squash creation -really delicious.

THE MODERN--seeking recommendations.

My last visit was just before Christmas and this looks to be the same menu. The pheasant soup and poached egg with artichoke puree will both delicious. On previous visits I have had the butter poached lobster and chorizo crusted cod and I would recommend both. This last time I had the Creekstone beef tenderloin and it just didn't hit the mark for me. If you are a martini lover - they make a great one; extra cold with little shards of ice floating on top. Enjoy your dinner!

5 days in the City with my Sister

On Hell's Kitchen.. I have eaten there many times pre-theater and it is has been consistently good. Another good place is Toloache which is on 50th between Broadway and 8th. You can check out their menu here to see if it would interest you and your sister.

If you want to have your Mexican meal downtown, you can try L'Esquina on Kenmare Street. You will need to book in advance. I think they also do brunch.
I second Locanda Verde in Tribeca and Bar Artisanal is also down there if you want to take a break for some wine and cheese.
Have fun in the city!

Where to shop for good fruit/veg and specialty items near Dupont Circle/Adams Morgan?

My sister lives in DC and we have been trying to eat a little better at home but a lot of the things I am suggesting for recipes she is having trouble finding near her - Puy Lentils, Fermented Black Beans, good selection of spices, blood oranges, meyer lemons, Tuscan kale. Is Whole Foods the only answer? Appreciate any help you can give.

Apple Infused Vodka

I have made apple vodka in the fall for the last few years and even if I have included some lemon slices, the apples still discolor somewhat, after a point. I don't think you can really put in the amount of lemon needed to acidify the mixture and not change the taste of the final product, as you say. As far I know, having consumed the vodka for a few years now, there is no problem with the color. Once I strain out the apples (I also use cinnamon sticks and some cloves), it has the coloring of apple juice which seems pretty natural.

Good cheese shops in the Woodstock./Saugerties/Kingston area?

Thanks. I'll check out the Cheese Plate and continue to import from the city if all else fails!
