Phila University City - (Drexel) cheap eats

If you want great cheap food, go to a lunch truck. There's tons of lunch trucks on and around Penn's campus. I recommend Ali baba's magic food on 37th and walnut next to the gym there. For restaurants I'd recommend dahlak eritrean food (47th and baltimore), marathon grill on 40th and walnut (a bit pricey, but they give you a LOT of food) and one mexican place on 39th and walnut that's just great. DON'T go to Qdobo, distrito, dock street, or the gold standard. Very expensive food with very small portions.

I live around the corner from dock street and have been there a few times. Definitely would NOT recommend it as cheap. The beer's overpriced but high in alcohol, so I guess it evens out. The pizza is pretty expensive and very weak compared to real italian places around philly. I remember one pizza I got there was, and I kid you not, all ketchup for sauce. Yikes! Inedible. I think they get you nice and drunk so when the food comes out it's tastes OK. I will admit their crust is awesome, since they use a wood fire grill.

Falafel in Philly?

There's a lunch truck on Penn's campus that has the best shawarma in Philly. It's called Ali baba's magic food and it's on 37th and walnut next to the gym there. I recommend getting a platter instead of a sandwich, the guy there likes to pack the sandwich really full so it's a little drippy. They have excellent falafel there too. Next to that I'd say Saad's on 45th and walnut is easily the best place in Philly. Every time I go there I get a chicken Maroosh, hands down the best sandwich I've had in my life!!

West philly food trucks.

I love Ali Baba's magic food! His Kebby and Kafta were out of this world. I rarely go into university city any more, so I was thrilled to see he started parking his truck on Saturdays at Clark Park on 43rd and Baltimore. I now get up every Saturday morning and trek there to get my grub on. There's also Honest Tom's awesome soft tacos. They take forever to make them, but they're really good. Plus, there's a farmers market right there!
