A craft beer empire is about to be made

I am in the Tampa Bay Area of Florida and the craft beer scene here is expanding by leaps and bounds....I will continue to support the local breweries and don't really care much about the "growing big corporate" craft beer scene.....there are awesome local brews and would rather support those with the vast majority of my money than "craft beers" being imported into the state from huge corporations.....locally owned and operated breweries are awesome and deserve our support....,nothing against some of the quality beers being brewed by some of these large companies, but will support local over them every time.

Overseas Highway trip

Yeah.....Kojin Noodle House's prices are about twice the norm for Virtnamese places in the Tampa Bay Area too. Their Pho is okay (well, when I tried it a few years ago), but I'd just basic decent pho for $16/bowl. Tried a new place on up Roosevelt last week.....called Sister Noodle House. Pho was $8/bowl, but that was for what we would call a baby bowl (for little kids) around here. Also, was very cloudy, not very good broth. There is really no good Asian food in the Lower Keys or Key West.

For a quick, cheap place to grab a bite to eat I would recommend Cayo Mexican Cantina.....food trailer on the corner of Duval and Angela (if I remember correctly)....good tacos and very good burgers (well, at least they are if you get them medium rare....have never had them any other way).

We also normally grab a Sunrise Special at Cuban Coffee Queen for breakfast and sometimes stop by there to grab an iced cafe con leche when getting a little hot while running around.

Will try to think of some other suggestions and post later if I do.....enjoy your trip.

Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Drive - Looking for a dinner down & lunch/brunch back

Just some clarification on the Hawk's Cay suggestion for brunch (at least I think that was the suggestion). Hawk's Cay is 60 miles from Key West.....far from "right outside Key West"......

Best Cuban in Naples?

$12.95 for a Cuban sandwich?....wow, prices are really high down there! I normally think $8.95 is on the high side around here (Tampa Bay Area)........

Key West - Looking for a nice restaurant for my 40th birthday.

Don't forget Cayo Mexican Cantina in your cheap eats list. As for a nice meal I have heard good things about Bistro Sole on White St, but they may not be open then. They are seasonal I believe, or at least started out that way......I know they closed sometime around May and opened back up in October, but I am not sure of the exact dates. Personally I always enjoy La Trattoria, but that's just a personal nostalgic favorite of mine.

Where do the locals eat in Florida Keys?

From what I had heard/read, the parent location in Seattle closed, but the location in Key West was still open.....at least as of Thursday.

I was wandering about that place. We were supposed to go try it on our trip last week, but the trip was cancelled due to an upcoming surgery. We will definitely have to go there next time!!

Personally, well relaxing down there I like a real causal breakfast......normally get a breakfast sandwich pressed on Cuban bread at either Sandy's or Cuban Coffee Queen.....if at CCQ Is nice to enjoy the sandwich and a cafe con leche while sitting by the harbor enjoying the view. Last trip down we really enjoyed great burgers and tacos for lunch at Cayo Mexican Cantina.....then again, lots of times I just walk down to Old Town Bakery and grab a warm baguette for breakfast to go with some good cafe con leche (if not having cuban toast or cheese toast with it).........very cheap but delicious breakfast!

Dogfish 120, Holy #$%^^

Had a vertical tasting at a beer fest last Saturday.....2009, 2011, 2012. The 2009 was the most interesting. It was very dark in color and had morphed into what I would almost call a barley wine. Really sweet, almost no alcohol flavor and no hops. Maybe I will let my 2013's sit for a few years in my beer cellar!

What happened to the Buca di Beppo in Tampa?

I know what you mean about that......I first moved to Brandon in 1976 and lived there until 1980........it's barely recognizable compared to back then. Heck, I lived there again from 1987-1992, and it has changed drastically even since then.

The owners are the original owners of Taste of Saigon.

Don't know about around Disney, but there are some good Vietnamese places not far from Treasure Island....Pho Kien Giang has about the best Pho and iced coffee in Pinellas County. It is at 8730 49th St N in Pinellas Park.....Ben Thanh has good Banh Xeo, Beef Fondue, Banh Hoi and Banh Beo and other dishes. It is at 4200 62nd Ave N in Pinellas Park....and Pho Quyen has good spring rolls and Nem Nueng. It is at 4505 Park Blvd in Pinellas Park. I go to 4 or 5 different Vietnamese rstaurants depending on which particular dish I want to eat. Those I mentioned are very good for the dishes I mentioned.

Summer Beer Rundown 2014 -- What are you drinking this year?

Loading up on sours.....NB LaFolie, Jacobins Cuvée Rouge, Bruery Oude Tart, etc. But I also drink my normal favorites year round......that would be stouts, porters, doppelbocks, quads, etc. Weather it's hot or cold out those styles (as well as the sours) are my go to beers.

Best Pho in Tampa Bay

Would also suggest Pho Kien Giang on 49th St in Pinellas Park (right near 87th Ave N on the west side in little strip center). Is the original owners of Taste of Saigon....very good Pho and good chicken wings.

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

They could just go downtown St Pete and hit Three Daughters, Cycle and Green Bench all in one side trip......no food like at Peg's, but the same beer at Cycle.
It's tough to hit so many breweries and places to eat with a limited amount of time. There are so many breweries in the Tampa Bay area now.....can think of at least 12-16 off-hand.

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

Willard's is a cool craft beer bar, but I would probably stick to visiting the local breweries' tasting rooms. A lot of what Willard's has on tap you may be able to get back at home. You can always check their website to see what they have on tap that night and swing by if there is something that really interests you. It is very close to Rapp and Pair O Dice

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

Pho Kien Giang on 49th St is open until 10:00pm on weekends and has excellent Pho and chicken wings. Pho Queyen on Park Blvd is open until 10:00pm and has good Nem Nuong, Broken Rice dishes, Bun dishes and very good springrolls. There is ABC Seafood (good authentic Chinese restaurant) on 54th Ave North that is open until 12:00am or 1:00am.

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

Don't have any really good suggestions on the food, although there are some really good southeast asian (mainly Vietnamese options) in the St Pete area if you are interested. Most within 10 min or less the of Rapp/Pair O Dice area. Suggestions on which Vietnamese restaurant would depend on what type of dishes you were interested in.
Am glad to see you have Rapp Brewing on the agenda....that is the best microbrewery in the area IMHO....definitely allot some time for there, as he has 20 of his own beers on tap and they are all good. I like the other breweries in the area, but none have compared so far in terms of variety and quality across the board.

Key West eateries for 7 days?

Would definitely second Garbo's Grill and El Siboney.....we also sometimes grab breakfast sandwiches and coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen and enjoy breakfast down by the harbor. Duetto has some good pizza for a quick, reasonable meal.

Chinese Food - Pinellas County

As far as Vietnamese I would suggest the following places: Pho Kien Giang (8730 49th St N, Pinellas Park) for Pho; Ben Thanh (4200 62nd Ave N # C, Pinellas Park) for dishes such as banh xeo, banh hoi, beef fondue, etc; Pho Quyen (4505 Park Blvd N #10, Pinellas Park) for the best springrolls in the area plus dishes such as nem nuong, beef with lemongrass and some decent broken rice dishes; Thang Long (4648 Park Blvd N, Pinellas Park) has some pretty good roast duck noodle soup.

Oh yeah.....Pho Quyen opened a location north on US 19 called Pho Queen at 29000 US 19 N, Clearwater

Thanks for the pointer on the royal red shrimp at Conch Republic......had a bad dinner there years ago and haven't really eaten there since. Will have to give them another try, and will definitely call ahead to see if they have the royal reds. Will also try 2cents.....have been wanting to try there and Grunts, but we just never seem to make it there. Will be down again shortly though and hope to remedy that!! :)

Key West suggestions

Rent bikes or scooters.....though you can walk all of Old Town.....most restaurants I know to hit are more to the other end. I would say Grunt's Island Grill, Garbo's Grill (food cart) , and Conch Shop (on Petronia) for a Nasty Burger. Will post other ideas if I think of them......know I'm forgetting a couple at the moment.
If you go to Garbo's Grill check out Pepper's (hot sauce shop) across the street. They allow you to sample a large variety of the sauces (as well as other items) in the store. Though they will not give out samples of anything over 600,000 scoville units. They provide tortilla chips, but you can also bring in your own food and some beer to try out the wares.

Cigar City also sells several different of their beers in cans and is expanding the selection in the future. I know you can currently get Florida Cracker White Ale, Hotter then Helles, Jai Alai, and Maduro.
