Summer Beer Rundown 2014 -- What are you drinking this year?

Loading up on sours.....NB LaFolie, Jacobins Cuvée Rouge, Bruery Oude Tart, etc. But I also drink my normal favorites year round......that would be stouts, porters, doppelbocks, quads, etc. Weather it's hot or cold out those styles (as well as the sours) are my go to beers.

Best Pho in Tampa Bay

Would also suggest Pho Kien Giang on 49th St in Pinellas Park (right near 87th Ave N on the west side in little strip center). Is the original owners of Taste of Saigon....very good Pho and good chicken wings.

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

They could just go downtown St Pete and hit Three Daughters, Cycle and Green Bench all in one side trip......no food like at Peg's, but the same beer at Cycle.
It's tough to hit so many breweries and places to eat with a limited amount of time. There are so many breweries in the Tampa Bay area now.....can think of at least 12-16 off-hand.

Willard's is a cool craft beer bar, but I would probably stick to visiting the local breweries' tasting rooms. A lot of what Willard's has on tap you may be able to get back at home. You can always check their website to see what they have on tap that night and swing by if there is something that really interests you. It is very close to Rapp and Pair O Dice

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

Pho Kien Giang on 49th St is open until 10:00pm on weekends and has excellent Pho and chicken wings. Pho Queyen on Park Blvd is open until 10:00pm and has good Nem Nuong, Broken Rice dishes, Bun dishes and very good springrolls. There is ABC Seafood (good authentic Chinese restaurant) on 54th Ave North that is open until 12:00am or 1:00am.

2 Suggestions Needed for Tampa & Surrounding Area

Don't have any really good suggestions on the food, although there are some really good southeast asian (mainly Vietnamese options) in the St Pete area if you are interested. Most within 10 min or less the of Rapp/Pair O Dice area. Suggestions on which Vietnamese restaurant would depend on what type of dishes you were interested in.
Am glad to see you have Rapp Brewing on the agenda....that is the best microbrewery in the area IMHO....definitely allot some time for there, as he has 20 of his own beers on tap and they are all good. I like the other breweries in the area, but none have compared so far in terms of variety and quality across the board.

Key West eateries for 7 days?

Would definitely second Garbo's Grill and El Siboney.....we also sometimes grab breakfast sandwiches and coffee at Cuban Coffee Queen and enjoy breakfast down by the harbor. Duetto has some good pizza for a quick, reasonable meal.

Chinese Food - Pinellas County

As far as Vietnamese I would suggest the following places: Pho Kien Giang (8730 49th St N, Pinellas Park) for Pho; Ben Thanh (4200 62nd Ave N # C, Pinellas Park) for dishes such as banh xeo, banh hoi, beef fondue, etc; Pho Quyen (4505 Park Blvd N #10, Pinellas Park) for the best springrolls in the area plus dishes such as nem nuong, beef with lemongrass and some decent broken rice dishes; Thang Long (4648 Park Blvd N, Pinellas Park) has some pretty good roast duck noodle soup.

Oh yeah.....Pho Quyen opened a location north on US 19 called Pho Queen at 29000 US 19 N, Clearwater

Dining in Key West

Thanks for the pointer on the royal red shrimp at Conch Republic......had a bad dinner there years ago and haven't really eaten there since. Will have to give them another try, and will definitely call ahead to see if they have the royal reds. Will also try 2cents.....have been wanting to try there and Grunts, but we just never seem to make it there. Will be down again shortly though and hope to remedy that!! :)

Key West suggestions

Rent bikes or scooters.....though you can walk all of Old Town.....most restaurants I know to hit are more to the other end. I would say Grunt's Island Grill, Garbo's Grill (food cart) , and Conch Shop (on Petronia) for a Nasty Burger. Will post other ideas if I think of them......know I'm forgetting a couple at the moment.
If you go to Garbo's Grill check out Pepper's (hot sauce shop) across the street. They allow you to sample a large variety of the sauces (as well as other items) in the store. Though they will not give out samples of anything over 600,000 scoville units. They provide tortilla chips, but you can also bring in your own food and some beer to try out the wares.

Magic Hat in cans

Cigar City also sells several different of their beers in cans and is expanding the selection in the future. I know you can currently get Florida Cracker White Ale, Hotter then Helles, Jai Alai, and Maduro.

Mercel's Bake Shop (Pinellas Park)

Sounds great.....I've been wanting to try this place for somewhere around a year and a half to two years.....and I drive past it a couple of times a week. Now I have no more excuses not to try it......will have to give up one of my twice a week Vietnamese meals and try some Filipino

Bizarre eats in Tampa, St. Pete, Plant City, Orlando, Sarasota or just Florida

You can find Durian and Balut at many of the asian markets/stores in the Tampa Bay area. I don't think you're going to find a restaurant that serves either one. You can get Durian flavored drinks. You might even be able to find some frozen insects at some of the asian stores.

Tampa area oriental grocery stores and nurseries

You can also go to the Mustang Fleamarket on Park Blvd in Pinellas Park. Its the outdoor section of Wagon Wheel Fleamarket..... lots of asian vendors selling produce and plants

Good Chinese and Asian anywhere in Florida???

Totally agree with Mild Bill.....specifically in regard to Southeast Asian fare.....I haven't really found that much great Chinese around the Tampa Bay area, but there are a couple in Tampa that I'm sure people more experienced with them will point out. I think that there is a good amount of very good Vietnamese in the Pinellas County area.
Let us know what your favorite Vietnamese and Thai dishes are....then it would be easier to point you in the right direction. I routinely go to 2-3 different Vietnamese restaurants a week depending on what I feel like eating that night.....one for Pho, one for Banh Xeo (or Banh Hoi, beef fondue, etc) and yet another for my favorite spring rolls or Nem Nuong....

Key West: Havana 1 or El Siboney?

I have also always enjoyed El Siboney. Have been eating there for years and rarely ever had any complaints. I have been meaning to try Havana 1, but for some reason never made it there on the last three or four trips. I guess that isn't much help, but there have been some so-so reviews lately on El Siboney and most reviews on Havana 1 have been very good. That probably isn't much help.

What I am trying to say (I think) is I guess if you have been to El Siboney before I would suggest you go to Havana 1 first. What the hell, you should have time to go both places unless you're only going to be there one day (couldn't even imagine that!! :) ......I will be back down at least two time this year, so I will definitely try Havana 1 this year!!

Whatever you do avoid most of the restaurants in the major tourist section of Duval.....except for maybe La Trattoria. Grab breakfast sandwiches and cafe con leche at Sandy's or Cuban Coffee Queen. Maybe a fish taco or one of the other good offerings at Garbo's (food cart).....and if you're looking for a laid back bar hang out at Schooner's Wharf in the afternoon to enjoy some drinks and listen to Michael McCloud. For craft beer (if you're into that) stop by The Porch and Krawl Off Duval. The only half-way decent asian on the island is at Kojin Noodle Bar. If you have the time stop by the Conch Shop on Petronia (only open maybe four days a week) for some conch fritters, cracked conch, conch ceviche, souse, or a really good Nasty Burger. Don't be scared by the only outside seating and the "rustic" appearance.

Best butcher shop in St. Pete

I haven't seen a real butcher shop anywhere in Pinellas County recently......used to be a little one up by me in Northern Pinellas, but they closed down years ago. I would love to find an actual butcher shop and would be willing to drive a decent distance to be able to get quality meats and custom cuts.

Good Burger in Key West?

So far the best I have had is the Nasty Burger at the Conch Shop on Petronia. It's not necessarily the biggest (Caroline's is much larger as are some others), but it had the best flavor and is big enough. I has grilled onions with some jalapeno, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickle and I believe mayo. They're only open on Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun 11am to 7pm (4pm on Sun)

Key West - Staying around Thanksgiving.

Liked the burger at The Conch Shop.....little shack of a place in the Bahama Village on Petronia, but good food so far. Only had conch fritters and Nasty Burger so far.....they were out of collard greens unfortunately......still have to try some of their other foods......conch sandwich, conch chowder, souse, etc.
Skip the fries....not bad, but not worth the extra money. Only open on Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun.....open like 11am-7pm

Haven't really been anywhere else yet except picking up my normal egg/ham/cheese on pressed cuban bread with a cafe con leche for breakfast.....just got here yesterday afternoon.....hanging out with some locals at Schooner's Wharf for a few lunchtime beers today......maybe something interesting for dinner tonight

Gulfport/Tampa - SICHUAN PEPPERCORNS! Where?

Yes, I have purchased Sichuan peppercorns at at least one of them. Also, the markets do carry a variety of asian produce, but you can oftem find a better assortment and prices at the Wagon Wheel/Mustang Fleamarket on Park Blvd on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Just tell them to make sure to go to the asian section.....it's outdoor on the west end of the market

Gulfport/Tampa - SICHUAN PEPPERCORNS! Where?

There are a large number of Asian markets in southern Pinellas County. Just to name a few you have Dong A with one location on 49th St around 87th ave north I believe and another location around 30th ave north and 16th street. Also, Cho Lon on 34th St just north of 54th ave north. There is another right around the corner from that one, it is on 62nd ave north about 1 1/2 to 2 blocks west of 34th St north..........probably another half dozen at least in the area, but those are the ones we frequent

Key West - Staying around Thanksgiving.

I've been wanting to try Santiago's Bodega for a long time, but somehow we never seem to make it there. Maybe this trip we'll swing by......definitely going to try to hit the Conch Shop and Grunt's. Still not sure where else new we'll try. Will most probably get the normal fix of Cuban food and swing by Kojin Noodle Bar for a little decent asian fare. I'm also considering trying Inca's Restaurant on White Street for a little Peruvian fare.....hmm

Key West - Staying around Thanksgiving.

The wife and I are also supposed to be there for about four nights the week of Thanksgiving.

A few small suggestions to try: Kojin Noodle Bar, Paseo (I wasn't blown away, but only tried one thing and it definitely garnered a retry), Havana 1 or somewhere for some cuban......I always grab some breakfast sandwiches and cafe con leche at Sandy's or Cuban Coffee Queen (sometimes at the Courthouse Deli since it is really close to where we stay).
I definitely want to try Grunt's...didn't get a chance while we were down last month. I would also recommend trying The Conch Shop on Petronia......mind you though, they're only open on Friday and Saturday for limited hours.

Totally agree with your assesment of Mangoes.....typical of most places on Duval, it seems to be a tourist trap.

Can anyone beat a Publix Sub?

Yeah, I started eating good hoagies (and cheesesteaks) about 32 years ago when we first moved up there. There used to be a place out by MacDill (over on or near Bayshore) that had hoagies similiar to up north....think the guy was from Jersey. I can't remember the name of the place and don't know if its still there. Last time I was there was probably around 1990 or so.

Was just looking around online and think I may have been thinking of Chubby's. Was very good back in the late 80's to early 90's, but I guess it has changed owners twice since then.....looks like mixed reviews now.

Returning to Key West after 40 years

Yeah....its changed more than you would believe....I still like it down there, but it has become so touristy (and therefore) expensive since even the 80's. I, personally think it is rather difficult to find decent eats down there (especially for the prices). Garbo's has some good eats (it is a food cart), El Siboney and Havana 1 for sit down Cuban food. I always pick up sandwiches at Sandy's or Cuban Coffee Queen. Bad Boy Burrito has some decent eats.....Kojin Noodle Bar is about the only place to get a decent asian fix. They're very expensive compared to places I eat where I live, and the dishes aren't necessarily authentic but the quality is decent and there really is no other good asian restaurants. Avoid the three Thai places on the island.
