Input sought for good "traditional" dinner spot within walking distance to DF Zocalo

Look for the "Hosteria de Santo Domingo". I don;t know whether they serve dinner but it is as traditional ( and tasty) asthey come.

50th Birthday in Mexico City!

I'd go to Las MaƱanitas in Cuernavaca --- 70 miles away.

Yes, the food at Pujol is better, no doubt about it. However, LM is a much more Mexican experience. Lunch overlooking that stunning garden and surrounded by that art is heaven. Even better, stay overnight. You won't regret it. That's where I spent the night after getting married a few miles away 13 yrs ago.

Dinner in the Financial District

Aqua! Hmmm. California and Battery. Fantastic seafood.

Contramar (Mexico City) Now Accepts Reservations

Contrary to popuar belief, many Mexicans actually do have lunch before 3PM, not at noon-1PM but certainly before 230PM.

Contramar (Mexico City) Now Accepts Reservations

I am surprised by this thread. I have been making reservations at Contramar for a few years -- the last time being last December when I last visited DF --. I just picked up the phone and called and had no problem. I doubt that I am in any "special" list.

15th Anniversary Dinner - Which 2 star?

For the best meal of your life (or mine at least!) go to Pierre Gagnaire. He is a chef's chef. You better be into molecular gastronomy though. For a more classic meal in a stunning setting, go to Le Grand Vefour. Fantasic food, beautiful setting. Avoid Les Ambassadeur's. I went there for my 5th wedding anniversary. The room is very pretty but the food was not up to par.

"Chiquito pero Peligroso":El Tizoncito,DF,the birth place of tacos al pastor

I am now in my mid 40s ( age, not tacos!). I ate 10 or so last summer when I last ate there. Next time try El Farolito, it is a wonderful taqueria. They are known for their beef tacos but all of them ( including pastor, carnitas, etc) are very nice. They have a restaurant on Alfonso Reyes in the Condesa area and another one in Polanco. If you feel more adventurous and can eat spicy food, go to El Villamelon, near the bull ring in Colonia del Valle. Go early in the morning for great beef tacos cooked in salsa roja.

Thanks for your post. You took me back to the 80's when I used to down 40 of these babies each Friday night.

Very good experience at Ino tonight

I went there two weeks ago and admit I was a tad disappointed. The extraordinary amount of wasabi overwhelmed the flavor of the fish. For US$100 per person I expect more.

Mexico City Recommendations Needed

Peter, I've never been to the one on Reforma 222 but the owners / menu should be the same. You should be fine. Enjoy breakfast at El Cardenal. Have fun in "el DF".

Mexico DF

I am a Mexico City native who loves food and who recently moved to SF. I find the food at Mexico DF very satisfying. When I need my Mexican food fix, that is where I go. Its menu is a lot more limited than what you find in Mexico, but what they serve is as authentic as can be. Try their tacos de buche, they are fantastic. Enjoy!

Mexico City Recommendations Needed

As a DF native I am glad to see the quality of the recommendations posted so far. Defintiely hit El Bajio for carnitas. The downtown recommendations such as La Opera and El Cardenal are great. I'd add La Hosteria de Santo Domingo and the Cafe Tacuba for dinner (where my grandfather proposed to my grandmother in 1937). Both have been there for ages. If you want something more upscale, Los Girasoles is a newer restaurant near the Museo Nacional de Arte. The food is quite good.

For tacos, go to El Farolito in Polanco. I've eaten their tacos since 1969, you can't beat them. If you find yourself in the southern part of the city, go to El Arroyo. As authentic as they come and a perfectly nice place to take your kids.

Enjoy!
