What makes the Philadelphia Italian Hoagie different from the rest?

Somewhat off topic: I love to eat hoagies when I get them, but to me, there is nothing better than a good hoagie which spends the night in my refrigerator and gets eaten the next day. The cold seems to firm everything up and gives the oil time to soak deep into the roll. Is it just me, or do others like hoagies that way?

What makes the Philadelphia Italian Hoagie different from the rest?

My observation is that people tend to prefer the hoagie they grew up with and hold that as the standard of excellence. I grew up in Delaware County, which I always considered hoagie heaven. We had Buono rolls, which I believe were superior to Amaroso's and others. Chester (Stackey's), Marcus Hook, Eddystone (Sue's), Linwood (Reavy's) and Folsom (Anna's) were where we always went for our hoagies, which was many years ago. Chinon00's post is right on the money.

The decline of the Italian Hoagie

In Folsom, while growing up in the '50s, we would go to Anna's. I know it stayed in business a long time, but anyone know if it's gone? Great hoagies. Also, another great hoagie place used to be Sue's in Eddystone. And finally, great hoagies also came from Stackey's in Chester and I think that place still exists, although in a different loction. As I recall, the best hoagie rolls came from Buono's Bakery in Delco. All probably gone by now (sigh...).

Lacroix for our 10th Anniversary - Review

Just wanted to add an "amen!" to the very positive reviews of Lacroix. Went there Christmas Eve and had a very delicious meal with a table overlooking a beautifully decorated Rittenhouse Square. It was about as perfect a dining experience as I've had.

Sunday Brunch/Lunch for 12 Center City

I'm looking for suggestions for an early Sunday afternoon lunch or brunch for 10 adults and two pre-adolescent kids in the city or nearby suburbs. Looking to dress casually and have light fare or pub grub. Hope to be able to sit and chat for a while after the meal is eaten. I know this is a tall order, but I also know no challenge is too great for Chowhound. :-) thanx.

Pennsylvania Foods

Hogmaw rocks! It's traditional on New Year's symbolizing the hog rooting out the old in search of the new. The best hog maw I ever had was in southern York County.

Graduation Lunch Near Widener U

I second Iron Hill and the Towne House. Probably the Towne House. Ate there for lunch Friday and had a wonderful club sandwich. Iron Hill has ample parking along side. Towne House is street parking or a garage a block away.

Relaxing, Good Food, Friendly Service

Although I live nearby, this was my first visit to Avril and it was an evening well-spent. It was my SO's birthday and the co-owner and the waiter made her feel special with a little extra dessert. The food was very good. For appetizers we each had the ahi tuna special which had a nice tomato sauce and capers. For the main course, I had the very delicious salmon cakes with, I believe, barley. It was filling and delicious. My SO had the flank steak special and found it tender and to her liking. On a rainy Thursday night, Avril was about half full, which made the ambience relaxing and intimate. Our waiter was sharp and attentive with a non-obtrusive sense of humor. For us, it's a neighborhood gem, to which we will be returning.

Cod's Tongues

Thanks. Samuels doesn't have cod tongues but they do have cod jowls. Don't know if they're the same thing. Anyhow, I may try them. Then again......

Cod's Tongues

There's a Newfoundland treat called "cod's tongues." Anybody know of anyplace in the Philly area that sells them, or any restaurants that have them on the menu?

"Fine Dining" in Philly, After Le Bec Fin

I second the opinion that 1862 is arguably the best "fine dining" restaurant in town. If you know anyone who belongs to the League, get them to take you there.

A La Maison in Ardmore

I agree. A La Maison is only average. We found it overpriced for the quality of the food. Claustrophic indeed describes the place. We had good service on a Friday night. The server was polite, efficient and attentive and she opened our wine without being asked. But the food was simply plain.

Lunch in Bala Cynwyd?

Where is Penn Valley Pub?

Venetian Cuisine?

Anybody recommend a restaurant in the Philly area which specializes in authenic cuisine from the Veneto region of Italy?. Specifically I'm looking for cuttlefish, vongele alle cozze, penne all' Amatriciana and bussolai. Grazie.

breakfast/diner stop off the PA Turnpike between Philly and Hershey

For future reference: The Park Place Diner is clean and serves good food. Good friendly service. Sadly, we don't eat there anymore because the portions are too BIG!! Well worth a stop.

Hot Dogs in Eastern PA

John's Doggie Shop on Chichester Highway in Boothwyn, Delaware County, has been selling the best hot dogs for more than 50 years.

Arlington lunch takeout

I will be visiting friends in Arlington for an afternoon over the holidays. Because of illness, we can't take my friends out for lunch, so I offered to bring lunch to their house. Since I'm driving from Philly, I don't want to tote food to Arlington. So, is there a good place between the beltway and Arlington (our destination is Second Street North) where I could buy a nice takout lunch for four people? I guess I'm thinking of sandwiches with all the fixins' or an entree entree or something a little fancy. Thanks.

Produce Junction - locations

When I was shopping the Italian market years ago, you weren't allowed to select the pieces you wanted and you certainly couldn't smell them. You'd risk getting yelled at by the vendor. Most of the places adhered to this practice.

Rittenhouse area late brunch with kids

I was faced with an almost identical situation (1 p.m. Sunday brunch, large party, kids) and solved it by going to Ted's Montana Grill at Broad and Spruce. They don't have a formal brunch, but when making my reservation I told them I had a party of 8 and one of us was celebrating a birthday. They put us in a nice separate room, with a big picture window overlooking Broad St., and although they don't sing happy birthday they did bring the birthday girl cookies and ice cream with a candle. We had the room all to ourselves. The food was good, the menu fairly extensive, and the service attentive. Now, Ted's aint the Ritz, but it's not a dive either. We had a great time. I'd do it again. Of course, their specialty is bison burgers, but you can get conventional meat too. Though four blocks from Rittenhouse Square, you might want to check it out.

Thanksgiving at home

We got a great pre-cooked turkey from the Acme in Concordville last Thanksgiving.

Main LIne. Need Help

Yang Ming canj get awfully crowded and noisy. I wouldn't consider Yang Ming to be a quiet restaurant. Ditto for Tango.

Hymie's Deli and other Main Line good eats

Hymie's is as good a deli as I've eaten in -- including the Famous. It's impossible to leave Hymie's without a doggie bag or box. Sam's in Wynnewood is also good, but small and very crowded around dinner time. Not much elbow room. I agree with others who found Yeats wanting.

John's Doggie Shop--any opinions?

When I was a kid I would take my music lesson at Caruso's on 7th street and then get a couple of hot dog's at John's across the street. Although I have not had a John's doggie in some 50 years, I remember how wonderful they were. Time to go back and get some more.

Dinner Ardmore/Bryn Mawr

McCloskey's is good. Primavera is one of my favorite places.

The best authentic pizza in the Philly area

I think it is the same Marra's from Springfield. That was the first pizza I ever ate and it defines pizza for me. Still the best I ever ate. I ate there a lot in the '50s and after an absence of many years was very disappointed to see that it is no longer there. I think it's the same Marra's family from Passyunk.

Where to take my girlfriend's dad to ask for her hand in Philadelphia

I'd consider Prime Rib. Very nice ambience. Excellent food.
