bbq menu

Thank you for all of the feedback! To answer some of your questions: We both bbq and grill, but our charcoal bbq is fairly small. The group will consist of 20-30 ppl with kids ranging from age 4-9. I am tossing around the idea of a potluck, but generally like to provide the food. There are very few food restrictions, but have heard at least one family talk about their disgust over eating meat off of a bone. How sad is this? There are few things I love more than barbecuing chicken hindquarters with some of the traditional sides you've mentioned. Note: This person will happily eat a bratwurst. What gives?

bbq menu

I am planning a family BBQ for many families with young kids. I am wanting to limit the menu to one protein, salad, side, and desert. What crowd pleasers do you recommend? Thank you!

Meal Train for young family

Hello! My daughter's classmate (6 y.o.) is very ill and in the hospital. Our school community is putting together a meal train to provide the family homemade meals while they attend to his health needs. There are two other small children in the home. They have no food restrictions. I am at a loss for a "crowd pleaser" dish. So far, families have signed up to bring them lasagna and white chicken chile. I would appreciate any suggestions for ready meals to deliver. Thank you!!!

Not enough Turkey!!!

We are hosting the holiday and are scheduled to have 10 adults and 7 children for dinner. The meat shop made an error with my pre-ordered free-range turkey and instead of being 17+ lbs, it is only 13.75 lbs. Most of us prefer dark meat anyway, and I am considering roasting additional hindquarters instead of tracking down a bigger bird. Thoughts, opinions? Thank you!

Redding Restaurants

Hello. My friend and her three children just moved to Redding CA for a fresh start. I would love to send them a dining gift certificate. I know Redding probably isn't saturated with great restaurants but thought I'd put it out there. She really values fresh local ingredients. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Comfort food that freezes well

Yes, I have added this to my list as well. Interesting twist on a casserole!

Comfort food that freezes well

Thank you to all for the great ideas! Looking more toward the main courses and one dish kind of meals to make things as simple as possible.

Comfort food that freezes well

My 65 year-old mom is getting hand surgery soon and won't be able to cook for quite some time. My dad's skill set is limited to grilling and I would love to prepare them a couple weeks worth of food that they can thaw and reheat. They have no food allergies, although my mom can't tolerate much heat (spice). They are folks who love soups, pastas, enchiladas, casseroles, etc. I am a decent cook but would love to be inspired by new recipes. Thank you!

drinking in ballard

Meeting up with old friends in Ballard midweek for food and drinks. Looking for comfortable and casual...not averse to taverns. Suggestions?

Quiche

Thank you all. I am in Olympia
WA, and asparagus is pretty abundant/affordable right now. I think I'll do an asparagus, ham, and gruyere quiche. Although, I look forward to working with leeks and grilled vegetables in the future. Great suggestions.

Quiche

I am contributing in the way of quiche for a potluck style picnic this Sunday. The group consists of adult women who love good food and do not have any food restrictions. I am tiring of my usual quiche lorraine and would like to make something more creative. Any suggestions?

Soup for a new Mama

Wow, thanks for the responses! I spoke with my friend today and asked what her favorite soups were. She responded, "All soups!" She is really sleep deprived and I like the idea of soup from a mug : ). Great feedback everyone.

Soup for a new Mama

I am signed up to deliver a meal to my friends who just had a baby. For practical reasons, I'd like to take a soup, green salad, and bread. She doesn't want anything too spicy as she is nursing. However, i want to make up something comforting and delicious. I am happy to make my own stock. Anyone have any great recipes they would like to share? Note: They have no food allergies or aversions...just not too spicy. Thank you!

enchilada sauce

I really appreciate the feedback. Another reason I am leaning toward a canned sauce is my last attempt at making it was mediocre at best. It was from New Best Recipes (International Cookbook) and had a tomato sauce base. It didn't taste authentic at all. I am cooking for approx. 20 people and some are vegetarian. Therefore, I was thinking of making variations...perhaps cheese and chicken. I live in Olympia, WA and we have both large supermarkets and a couple of independent Mexican grocery stores. I'll let you all know how it turned out.

enchilada sauce

I am cooking enchiladas for a large group of decent cooks and feel pressed for time. Is it a mortal sin to use a canned sauce? Is there a brand you would recommend?

Night out in Tacoma

We tried Asado and were very happy. Thank you for the recommendation. What a cool little block...my husband had been there many years back and remembered Engine House 9 but stated most other businesses were newer. I like seeing the changes in Tacoma.

Night out in Tacoma

Tried 1022 and were happy with the atmosphere, drinks, and cheeses. However, everything took an exceptionally loooong time. I will remember to give ourselves more time should we return. Thanks again!

I was just viewing the Herbfarm's website and their nine course themed dinners. Has anyone had this experience and if so, is it worth the cost ($200 a person)?

Night out in Tacoma

I would like to take my partner out for his birthday and would appreciate recommendations (we are in Oly and seldom dine in Tacoma). I am a little burnt out on the traditional Pacific NW fare and am looking for something different and creative. Thanks!

Decent food in Tukwila?

Thanks to the both of you. I posted this pretty late and checked the thread when we arrived in town. We ended up at Bai Tong (just as they opened) and had a fantastic lunch. I highly recommend the crispy garlic chicken! What a pleasure to drive past the Claim Jumper, Applebee's, etc. to discover some truly delicious food.

Decent food in Tukwila?

We need to spend most of the day in Tukwila and all I can picture is chain restaurants. Anyone know of a decent place for lunch and a drink? Thank you.

Steak House

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I had no idea that my original post would provoke so much discussion!
In response to your questions...Yes, we are from Olympia and familiar with the greater Seattle area. I specified downtown because I intend to book a room there (also interested in any recommendations you may have in the $200 range). We are not at all opposed to driving out of the way if it's worth it. Most of our time in Seattle is spent in Ballard with family, so we haven't had much opportunity to enjoy other areas for awhile.
I will still consider the Met and will definitely check out Canlis. Thanks again!

Steak House

I am planning a one night stay in Seattle and would like to take my partner to the BEST steakhouse in the city. So far, I have heard that it's a toss up between the Met and El Gaucho. I would appreciate your feedback before I make a decision. Thank you!

Any restaurants worth the money in Olympia?

360-515-6405 is the number for Mero Mero and they can give you the exact address; however, it's near the Shell station on Capital way. My husband calls in the burrito special from work and rides his bike to pick up during his lunch break. He has mentioned many times how much healthier the food seems in comparison to California Tacos.

Olympia Catering???

Would anyone recommend an Olympia caterer for a house party of approximately 50 ppl? Many of the guests are foodies and appreciate fresh/local ingredients.
