John's is good but not great - but we can't find any decent thin crust pizza in Orange County or LA?

You should go to Veselka on 2nd avenue- It's open 24 hours a day and is great for breakfast or any meal....very casual - my brother in law is the owner and when we visit during NYC during the US Open - we love the blintzs, cold and hot borsch and the wonderful perogies. East Village has tons of great little places - all cheap.
Orange County California...only a few
The depressing part of eating out in Orange County is all the chains. I refuse to go anymore. I have lived in the area for over 20 years and their are only a few restaurants that are original and good. Here's a few of my favorites
Barelo Cafe on Newport Avenue - small Italian restaurant - chef cooks in the same room. Always good crisp bread and meals come with a salad- although lately the balsamic dressing is too heavy. Specific light coating of dressing. His wife owns another restaurant off Nohl Ranch Road called Trattoria ?? I like the service better and they have pizza on the menu.
Another favorite would be Brochard's in Garden Grove - near the 22 and Brookhurst. Excellent food but dress decently as it's an insult to come in with shorts and flipflops on. Great looking bar in the front. Vietnamise food is outstanding.
Sage Restaurant in Newport Beach is always good. I like to go eat outside in their backyard terrace. The other one at Newport Coast - is too full of the "beautiful phoney crowd"
Santa Monica Seafood Company - 17th street and Newport in Costa Mesa. Very fresh fish sandwiches, meals and oysters on the half shell (but they aren't on the menu) They service a great halibut chop
My absolute favorite bakery is Pan Cream on Camino Royale in Tustin. He's expanding and going to have a cafe next door The baggetts are excellent along with everything in his case. Sort of a French/Japanese bakery. The best in OC!
Other favorites...Memphis in Costa Mesa - and a great Indian takeout restaurant in Tustin at the corner if Redhill and the 5 freeway in the stripmall on the right as you exit.....all the way at the end. Their eggplant dishes are incredible.
No decent pizza places on OC - have to go to LA to get good thin crusted pizza.
What makes LA a foodie city? Tell Me
I went to the Farmers Market in Santa Monica and was so disappointed...no place to park - had to pay for parking - bums begging for food. Produce was excellent but if you want a great market go to UC Irvine on Campus drive on the weekends ...its really the best and guess what FREE PARKING
Test my Orange County Knowledge and Creativity
Here are my favorites Barelo Cafe - Tustin, Memphis in Costa Mesa, Sage in Newport Beach Le Jardins in Fountain Valley, Brochard Chateau in Garden Grove, there is a new one Main Street in Stanton on Beach blvd.(I may have the wrong name) The owner took an old sixties restaurant and turned it into a hip "Rat pack atmosphere...with great service and food. Santa Monica Seafood Co. serves great fish sandwiches for lunch.

The manager of the Bayside restaurant is now at the Hilton Waterfront in Huntington Beach running their new restaurant "Shades"....its great because you can sit outside by the pool and see the ocean. Menu is varied ...but it's all good.
Touring the best bakeries in Los Angeles
If you get past Los Angeles and head south there are some excellent bakeries in Little Saigon - most of them are on Brookhurst street.

a few more do not miss: John's Pizza - there is one in the village and on times square - the village one has a lot of charm but always a line.
Also, stop by Jacque Torre's chocolate factory and without a doubt don't miss Chelsea market - full of restaurants, shops and bakeries.. You can hav a fantastic lunch there for not much money

I think it depends on your budget - If you want a great little restaurant (Polish) try Veselka in the east village. Most busy on Saturday's morning. but open 24 hours a day and cheap. It's been written up in all the magaznes. Great homemade soups, sausages and all things polish. It's on 2nd avenue and everyone knows the place. My favorite are the cheese blintzs.
