Small Town Road Trip Suggestions?

Edson - Mountain Pizza and Steakhouse. Standard steakhouse fare. It's been a few years so I hope they're still good! The mushroom caps were always fantastic.

Takoyaki Griddle in Calgary?

Has anyone seen any takoyaki griddles in Calgary? I'm looking for one as a gift and I'm kicking myself for not buying the one I saw in Vancouver last month!

Thanks!

Indonesian Lapis Legit Cake (aka Dutch Spekkoek)?

I remember it being very dense. I also remember several different spices. I'm thinking nutmeg and cinnamon amongst others. More spicy than sweet I think. It also has lots of layers. I'd guess that a 2" thick cake has at least a dozen layers.

I hope that I have the right Dutch name for the cake!

need good hot and sour soup and wonton in yyc

We like the hot and sour at Snow Palace in Crowfoot. If you like seafood in your hot and sour soup, the soup at T-Pot by the north T&T is pretty good too.

Indonesian Lapis Legit Cake (aka Dutch Spekkoek)?

Lapis Legit is one treat that I miss from my travels in Indonesia.

Has anyone out there tried making this at home? Any tips, tricks or foolproof recipes that you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yann Haute Patisserie in Mission, Calgary

I love Yann's!

Some of their seasonal macarons right now include a black tea one and a pumpkin spice one. I'm trying to talk my husband into making a trip into the city to get some!

Brunch at Nakoda Lodge

Has anyone tried the brunch at Nakoda Lodge lately? (That's the lodge on #1A, not the casino on #1.)

My husband and I ate there during our honeymoon many years ago and were thinking about trying it this weekend. Any recent reviews would be welcome. Also, how hard do you think it will be to get a reservation this weekend considering its the long weekend?

Thanks in advance!

Supper in Cochrane

I live in Cochrane. D'Vine seems to have recently changed into a Vietnamese sub place. Not sure what happened there.

Portofino has been really good everytime we've gone. My parents went a few weeks ago and raved about everything they had. I'll check to see which specific dishes they had since they've been there more recently than me.

In the same stripmall complex as Portofino is Coto which is Japanese. The food is excellent but it's often slow and comes out in a strange sequence sometimes. The food is worth it though!

Schooners on main is a great place for fish and chips too if you're in the mood for something fried. We go there at least once a month.

Where to find duck breasts in Calgary?

Have you tried Sunterra? They have them listed in their website. No word on if they're fresh or frozen.

Calgary's Best "Hidden Gems"

Another vote for Oliver Green's from me!

Also, Ogden Pizza (in Ogden - go figure!). They don't skimp on the toppings!

Not in Calgary, but the Cochrane Cafe (in Cochrane!) is a total dive judging by its decor but if you're looking for homestyle cooking and decent western style Chinese, this is a good place to go. One of the few places I know that still serves liver and onions!

Chinese in Red Deer?

Are there any decent Chinese places in Red Deer? I'm meeting up with a friend who moved to Norther Alberta and she's been craving good Chinese since she's left Calgary.

If there aren't any decent Chinese places, we'd also accept recommendations for kid friendly non-chain restaurants.

Thanks!

YYC foodies: do you grow your own food? [Moved from Prairie Provinces]

I have a pretty good arrangment. My husband grows the food and I cook it! Last year's garden included potatoes, swiss chard, onions, carrots, radishes, peas and shallots. The carrots and radishes were disappointing but everything else grew wonderfully. I actually don't know anyone who got any decent radishes this year. Was it just a bad year for them?

This year we have plans to expand the garden and add beets, various herbs, raspberries, saskatoons and a crabapple tree. We had a crabapple tree at our old place and we really miss having crabapple juice all winter.

Almond Flour in Calgary?

Has anyone seen Almond flour in Calgary? I'm going to attempt macarons and I'd rather not have to make my own flour! (Although it would justify a new food processor....hmmm)

Xan Mongolie BBQ - NW Calgary

I've heard that it is the same people that had the Mongolie Grill at Dalhousie.

Snow Palace is our go-to spot in Crowfoot - thanks to the recommendations from this forum!

Calgary: sausage making

I used to drive by a place on 52nd Street SE in the Foothills Industrial Park. I think they're called CTR and are on 49th or 48th Ave. They always had signs up for sausage making classes and supplies. However, I've never been inside so I can't vouch for their products and services. Hopefully someone knows what I'm talking about! I'd like to take some classes too.

turducken in Calgary or Edmonton

Not Cleopatra but I have a Turducken story to share! We ordered ours through Sunterra. They buy them from Valbella in Canmore. We probably could have bought straight from Valbella but my husband works near Sunterra so the convenience factor was a plus.

We picked up the Turducken on the 21st and started thawing it in the fridge that day. It was perfectly thawed by Christmas morning and my brother took over the cooking from there. Sunterra/Valbella provided an extra sheet of cooking instructions which were dead accurate for times and temperatures. The Turducken came out moist, browned and absolutely delicious.

I've attached a few photos below. :-)

Singapore style chilli crab in Calgary

I tried the T&T at Harvest Hills last night. They had an empty display box of Chilli Crab mix. At least I know they sometimes have it! I'm going to try one of the other T&T stores today. Thanks for the tip!

Oliver Green's (YYC)

When I worked in the Industrial Park this was a regular lunch spot. I always enjoyed their pizza. We had them do a buffet for us for a Christmas company lunch. I recall that a few things were hit and miss on the buffet that day but overall it was pretty good.

Singapore style chilli crab in Calgary

Has anyone run across Singapore style chilli crab in Calgary?

My parents spent several years in that part of the world and are craving chilli crab. Short of flying to Singapore, anyone know of a place that serves it?

Cantonese Chow Mein (Calgary)

After reading your post I had a sudden craving for Cantonese noodles. I now have a restaurant to add to your "don't bother ordering the Cantonese noodles" list.

I tried Fat Kee noodle house last night which is at 3132-26th Street NE. (Directly East of the big Husky truck stop on Barlow) Usually the noodles are wonderful here but the Cantonese noodles were definitely "meh". The noodles themselves were nice and crispy and pleasantly soft where covered by the sauce. The sauce was rather bland though. Meat included chicken, BBQ pork and shrimp. The kicker was the veggies. Veggies were a generous helping of bean sprouts and green onions.

Give the Cantonese noodles here a pass but I'd recommend nearly every other type of noodle on the menu!

(BTW - I miss the Lemon Tree too, We used to go there at least once a week when I worked on Shepard Road)

to all the restaurant's I've loved before....

The Imperial Palace on Centre Street North and 11th(?) in Calgary. I know they're still there but they have different owners and cooks. I think I heard rumors that the original owners when back to Hong Kong. I loved their dumplings!

to all the restaurant's I've loved before....

Good news! The Flamingo Palace has reopened! Talking to the waiter he said they have some of the same chefs as they did at the 11th ave location. The new location is behind the old Ikea at 3220-5th Ave NE. He did tell me to call before coming in during the evenings as they've been closing early if business is really slow. When I went they were cash only but were hoping to have credit/debit soon.

We're going tonight to see if it's as good as we remember!

Edited with quick update: I just called to make my reservations for tonight and have found that they're only open for lunch right now.

Calgary Fish and Chips?

FYI - The Lord Fin is now Schooners and is even better now! One piece of advice though - don't go when you're in a hurry. Service takes a while but it's always worth it!

I've found them in Cochrane IGA of all places. Right next to the rabbit...

I'm not sure where they get them from but I'll check next time I'm there.
