Shann's Profile
Shelburne, VT
Thanks everybody. We are really looking forward to it. There are several good choices here--too many for a short weekend, so we will have to pick based upon what mood we are in--do I want french cuisine or do I want a pizza that night!
I will post a review after we go.
Shelburne, VT
Thanks. My buddy who is notoriously pickly loves Starry Night but I haven't been there. Cucina Antica also looks good.
Shelburne, VT
My wife and I are going a little weekend getaway in June for our anniversary and we are staying at a B&B in Shelburne. We likely will be going into Burlington, but I'm pretty familiar with the restaurant scene there. Since I never stop in Shelburne on my way into Burlington, I've never eaten in Shelburne and thought it might be fun to check it out.
I'd appreciate any recommendations, etc., about places that I should think about trying. I know that Cafe Shelburne has been around for a long time and that the Inn at Shelburne Farms has some fans.
Thanks.
Buffalo Wild Wings???
I LOVE chicken wings, so I can't say that I hate it. The sauces are actually very good. But I've only eaten there about 3 times and each time the wings were pretty small. They were cooked find. Overall, kind of pricy for what you get. I think it would be okay to watch a ball game there but that's about it.
If you have a good local wing joint, don't bother. If there are no good wings around, they are completely acceptable..
brining dried beans?
I had never had luck with dried beans. I made black beans and rice over the weekend and the beans came out perfectly thanks to CI's quick brine\soak method of bringing 2 quarts water and 3 tablespoons salt to boil, adding the beans off heat and soak for an hour.
Best Chain Breakfast?
For the drivethrough, give me two sausage mcmuffin's from the dollar menu. As for a sit down, if you stick to fried or scrambled eggs and toast, they all seem pretty much interchangeable (and mostly pretty tasty too, since a competent grill cook is all you need)
Do you eat, and enjoy, your steak rare?
I like my steak so rare, I only eat Unicorn.
(I saw that somewhere--mabye even here--and it just cracked me up) Sorry,
Good and cheap in Warwick RI area
Thanks for the replies. A couple of good reccomendations. Now I have something to look forward to in addition to lugging my son's furniture around!
Good and cheap in Warwick RI area
We've been there once. Thanks for reminding me. We had a great time there and the food was good.
Good and cheap in Warwick RI area
So, we are back down in RI this weekend moving my son into a new apartment for hopefully the last time. His last tuition payment is coming up, so I'm not wanting to spend a lot of money but want to see what's good at a reasonable price.
I've seen Mike's Kitchen and Dave's Bar & Grill recommended a few times. My son is definately a pizza and burger kind of guy, so I'm not depriving him! We are staying at the Comfort Suites in West Warwick for a location reference.
Killington in June - Do restaurants shut down?
You're right. A lot of them do close down, at least for a part of the summer. I think Peppinos stays open all year. Sushi Yoshi used to close down because they've got a place over in Lake George but somebody told me that they might be open.
I would add Countryman's Pleasure in Mendon to your good short list of Rutland places.
Sirloin Saloon in Rutland closed again
The Sirloin Saloon in Rutland, VT used to be an institution. Just a good solid steak house with a great salad bar and a good vibe. It went through a couple of different owners and recently closed again. It had gone downhill greatly in the last few years and was not a good place to go, but still from a nostalgia point of view, Rutland has lost Sawdis, Panda Pavilion and now Sirloin in the last couple of years. Those were the nice places in this area from the time I was a kid.
Now, Rutland actually has several new and very good restaurants, but its still sad to see the old ones go.
"Bar S Beef Franks": has anyone tried them?
You're right. Life is too short for bad hot dogs. And I'm on a perpetual diet, if not particularly successful one. So when I eat a real hot dog I should go with a good one and get my money's worth.
"Bar S Beef Franks": has anyone tried them?
Bar S is bottom feeding. Some hot dogs are oddly expensive, but these are not good. I suppose if you needed a big bunch of dogs to burn on the grill and put lots of mustard and ketchup on them they'd be almost edible.
Potato Chip Afficionado
For sandwiches, plain Lays are great. However, you must get the big bag, not the little individual size bag or you will get nothing but tiny little chips and pieces.
One of the best chips I have ever had was something called 1851 Original that I got at K-Mart. I beleive that they were a Herr's kettle product. They were just awesome but they don't carry them any more and I can't find them anywhere.
Strangely enough, the Cumberland Farms convenience store brand is very cheap and really good. I like the sour cream ridged and the barbeque
Killington restaurant for big group of families?
I don't know if its big enough, but when you've got a bunch of kids, I always think Sushi-Yoshi is a great place because of the hibatchi tables. The kids love watching the chefs do their schtick and its a pretty fun place. I think you can fit like 8 people around 1 table.
Panda Pavillion--Rutland VT
I haven't eaten there since a new owner took over like a year ago. It was really good with the former owner but can't vouch for it now. I haven't heard anything bad about it though. I do know its a BYOB.
Help for tough steak
I make a swiss steak with tough cuts that are too thin for a roast or potroast. Sear it and cook it covered on low with some onions and mushrooms for an hour or so. I had some wicked tough round steaks and they came out nice and tender. It doesn't have that great beefsteak flavor though, more like a potroast.
Trattoria San Vivaldo
I'm glad that you enjoyed it as much as I did. As long as you go in with a good attitude, Chef will take great care of you.
I haven't been to RI for several months but hope to get there again soon.
Panda Pavillion--Rutland VT
A new Asian restaurant has opened in the spot of the old Panda Pavilion. It is called "East". They have a whole new decor and the staff is very friendly. They have chinese, japanese, sushi and I believe some curries as well. I've only eaten off the chinese menu and it is very good. Probably the best chinese in town. My buddy said the sushi was surprisinly good.
Vermont- Killington, Rutland and Mendon
bm_vt: I'm pretty sure that they are going to reopen although that's only my impression. They didn't suffer any damage to the kitchen or dining room but have to replace the ansel system before reopening.
Sal's in Rutland just changed hands. I heard that the owners got tired running the one in Wallingford and Rutland too. Sal's is good and I'd be happy to eat there but I think of it more as a solid decent value Italian than anything to get excited about.
Vermont- Killington, Rutland and Mendon
I don't know of anything on the mountain that is great. Maybe someone else does. But there are a few excellent places in Rutland. Roots, on Wales Street is nice. They try to do the localvore kind of thing. Table 24 at the other end of Wales is also very good upscale comfort food but they had a fire and may not be up and running again. Little Harry's is a small bar\cafe with an eclectic menu-try their red red shrimp if you like spicy! Harry's gets crowded so go early, but its also a nice bar.
In Mendon, only a few minutes from Rutland, up a little ways towards Killington, Countryman's Pleasure is a wonderful german restaurant. Sauerbrauten, spatzle and black forest cake and apple strudel. I think a little more expensive than the Rutland places but if you're from NYC everything will be reasonable.
Finally, Cafe Provence in Brandon is a french bistro a half hour north of Rutland. Owned and operated by a former director of the New England Culinary Instiitute. In addition to the good french fare, they have a surprisingly good brick oven pizza with sour cream, red onions and bacon. I actually prefer their appetizers and deseserts to their entree's but that's just me. They also have opened a bar area downstairs recently that I have not been to but hear its nice.
Panera Bread v. grocery store bakery
I had the asiago loaf last week. It was not bad, but I'm not a huge sourdough base fan and this seemed quite sour. I will be going back to try the baguettes and others. It was very nice to be able to pop in after work and pick up a good loaf without fighting the grocery store traffic as well.
Your all time favorite 'TV' cooking show chefs?
The ones I've enjoyed the most have been Alton Brown, Jacques Pepin and Martin Yan. I think I've used a lot more of the information from Brown than anyone else.
I hate to say but the cooks on America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country are also very good if you can tune out Kimball. They show you step by step how to do something.
Panera Bread v. grocery store bakery
Thanks. It is nice to have the option of picking up a decent loaf of bread at the last minute.
Panera Bread v. grocery store bakery
I have one great bakery near me, but they close early and unless I remember to go at lunch to get bread I'm out of luck. Other than that its the Hannaford bakery or the Price Chopper bakery. A new Panera opened near me, very convenient and open when I leave work.
How is the bread as compared to regular supermarket chain bakeries? (no Trader Joes or Whole Foods near me, just Hannaford, Grand Union or Price Chopper).
Panda Pavillion--Rutland VT
Yes, that is the one over by Home Depot. The one on 7 North is Shanghai & Tokyo and it is decent. I get it fairly often for take out on my way home to Brandon.
Let me know when you are coming to Rutland and I will try to offer up some suggestions.
Panda Pavillion--Rutland VT
Despite the fact that no one ever comes to Rut-Vegas, I remain undaunted and shall continue to post! I ate at the new restaurant in the old Panda location last night called East.
Szechaun beef was very very good, sweet and sour chicken good, crispy pork, okay. Veggies in garlic sauce was also pretty good. All in all, a good experience, especially for a place open less than a week.
Panda Pavillion--Rutland VT
I'm sad that Panda Pavillion in Rutland has closed. By far the best Chinese food in Rutland for years and years.
A new place called (I think) "East" has opened on the same spot. I am looking forward to trying it out.
Anything good near Essex?
You went to Leunig's. Your review is spot on. Its a cute little place and can certainly bring you in but the food is just okay. But really, going to a Bistro coming down from Montreal! Of course, Montreal is going to spoil you; there are so many great places there.
