Pickled deckel

I wonder if it's the same cut of meat that I remember, but more likely is that you are good at cooking deckel, no matter what it is, and that's why you are getting your good results. A good cook can make shoe leather taste good.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I spoke to a manager at Mariano's and it appears that they did their homework, they just didn't expect the massive turnout for the grand opening. Supposedly this was their best and busiest opening yet. Let's hope that those that were turned off will give them a second chance.

Pickled deckel

I remember seeing two different cuts of beef called deckel. One was the brisket deckel that was the fatty part on top of the lean first cut brisket. The other was called brust deckel and was located near the neck of the cow. It's an inch or two thick at it's thickest point and was very stringy and not very tender. It was a good relatively inexpensive sub for brisket and was often used as a cheap fake brisket corned beef. Not my favorite cut of beef.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I'm sure that they did their homework but I've heard more bad reviews than positive ones, both on Chowhound and in the community. It's true that Jewel wasn't the best at the start, but they didn't have someone to cheat of of on the final exam. I hope that they realize their mistakes before it's too late. Most people won't give them a second chance, especially since they already have Jewel to fallback on.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I'm very disappointed with the last few posts. I was hoping that Mariano's would have been better prepared, especially with all the time that they had doing their research of the competition. I wonder if they even bothered consulting with some of the kosher consumers.

I'm not sure what's the occasion for the kiddush, but I assume that a mazel tov is in order. May you continue to have happy (and less stressful) occasions.

Kitchen Counter Covers for Pesach

I've used plastic carpet liners. They are inexpensive, durable, easy to clean and can be used year after year.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I heard the same thing. Besides the now usual fried and baked chicken, you can pick out the steak of your choice from the kosher meat department and they will cook it to order right there for you. You can either take it home or eat it at the tables set up in the store.
Mariano's is known for it's high quality and customer service and they can leave Jewel behind in the dust.

New Mariano's in Skokie

There's a new Mariano's Supermarket scheduled to open this coming Tuesday at the corner of Touhy and McCormick in Skokie. It will have a full fresh food center all certified by the cRc including fresh meats and fish, a sushi bar, an olive bar, a soup bar, a candy bar that includes a variety of fresh popcorn and a full service deli with meats and salads and a fresh bakery with breads and cakes. Their grocery section is set to be one of the best in the Chicago area.
I'm sure that they will give Jewel a run for their money.

Passover 2015 Hotel Reviews

I absolutely agree. No matter what you do, you need to be prepared and well organized.
And, as you said, the hotel's only responsibly is basically your room and what's inside of it, and the grounds and pool. Otherwise, it's totally up to the operator, and it's even his responsibility to make sure that the hotel does what they are supposed to do.

Passover 2015 Hotel Reviews

Did any of you go to the KMR program that was in a Hilton resort in Nevada this year?
I always hear great things about them with all of their programs, wherever they go, and they're always at five star facilities.

Manischewitz, Lieber's, etc. How do they do it?

Many, and sometimes all of their products are made by a copacker as a private label, very much in the same way that Target and Wal-Mart has their shelves full of their own products.

Actually, that's no longer the case. Srulie's was recently sold so it's no longer in that group, or any other group.

flavored Vintage Seltzer

I checked with the cRc and was told that even though they do not accept the Triangle K, they did research on the Vintage Sodas, including the flavored varieties, and found that they are accepted for Passover as long as they are marked as kosher for Passover.

flavored Vintage Seltzer

I believe that the cRc isn't accepting the Triangle K hechsher on the Vintage soda. They are just accepting the soda itself because they have researched the bottling facility and have found that it's acceptable, regardless of the certification on the bottle. In fact, I heard that the factory is actually inspected by the OU.

New Dairy restaurant in Lincolnwood, Illinios

The Lincoln Cafe, located at the BP gas station on Lincoln Avenue near Pratt in Lincolnwood, Illinois is now open. All foods are either dairy or pareve, cholov yisroel and pas yisroel. Their menu can be found on the guide to Chicago on the cRc website. It's basically a grab and go place.

Now that foie gras is legal again in California

Tzar baalei chaim is not the reason that most would not certify it. It's primarily due to the high possibility that the animal was injured to the point that the goose became treif so it's liver, and the entire goose is now not kosher. Check it out.
I'm not a maven and I'm certainly not a posek, that's why I just asked someone that is.

Kosher?

Jewish doesn't necessarily mean kosher.
There are possible kosher versions of a Reuben using a pareve cheese or just leaving out the cheese altogether, but my guess is that the place was not kosher, just Jewish or Kosher Style.

milts bbq truck coming to FL

I heard different reasons ranging from difficulty in getting the proper licensing in Florida to just plain economics. Since there really isn't anything anyone can do to change it, it really doesn't make much difference.
