Kosher in Memphis?

Memphis is famous for many things, but there are two that are pertinent here.
There are some great cooks living in Memphis and the people in Memphis are very hospitable. Ya know, it's that Southern hospitality thing. So when in Memphis, just let one person know that you are visiting, and you'll have a dozen invitations for dinner before you've finished your sentence.

2nd Budda Buddai @ 77 Mulberry Street

With all of these great reviews, I was hoping to go there on my next trip to NY, but I checked the hashgacha out first and I didn't get a positive response from the cRc. Oh well.

Best kosher restaurants in the world

IMHO, the best restaurant is the one that you find in a kosher food desert when you are starved for some decent food besides yogurt or canned tuna fish from the local grocery store. Whatever they serve will be the best thing that you've ever eaten. Of course, there's always the Romanian salami that you brought with you.

I haven't been there in years, but I was told that it isn't exactly safe to be doing much walking too far away from the hotel. Be safe.

Kosher Options in Chicago O'Hare Airport?

Actually, there has been a very important change. The info from Asher above regarding Dunkin Donuts is no longer true. Although the kiosk is still owner by the same person that owns the cRc kosher store on Devon in Chicago, the donuts and bagels no longer only come from that store and cannot be considered kosher. So basically, besides the packaged goods that are certified and can be purchased at any airport in the world, you are out of luck. Sorry.
have a safe trip!

Costco sheet cake kosher?

Many stores similar to Costco buy a plain kosher frozen cake and they open it in the store to decorate it or write on it per the customer's orders. This will void the kosher certification unless there's an in-house mashgiach to certify the cake once the package is opened. Unfortunately, many stores, and consumers aren't aware of this minor issue which could possibly make a perfectly kosher and pareve cake become treif. Be very careful and don't just take the word of the store personnel. They may be well intentioned, but very wrong.

Srulie's A"H

Srulie's, the deli take-out store in the Wi-Fi building in Skokie has closed. The plan was to re-open in the now closed Northbrook location of Taboun, but that didn't work out.
So Chicago, in its continued effort to close more kosher restaurants than they open, now has two closed at one time, both Srulie's and Taboun Northbrook. Both of the closed locations are fully equipped and are basically a turn key operation ready to open again, so if there are any of you that have nothing better to do and have lost your mind and want to get into the kosher restaurant business in Chicago, here's your chance!

You are correct in assuming that no all vegan kitchens and their utensils are actually kosher.

How to eat in India?

Just so you know, there's another halacha regarding cooked foods, Bishul Yisroel. While it sounds like cholov Yisroel, it has nothing to do with it and it applies to everyone as a major kashrus issue. Certain foods, including some vegan foods, require bishul yisroel, and if it is not done, not only is the food considered treif, the pots, plates and utensils are also considered treif.
Not everyone keeps cholov yisroel, but bishul yisroel is not a choice.
In any case, have a safe trip in India.
Shabbat Shalom.

Sabbath mode ranges - have one you like?

I understand that there's a possible problem for those that use self cleaning ovens to kasher their ovens. The older ovens had a self cleaning feature that brought the temperature up close to 1000 degrees. It was so hot that you were able to kasher it without waiting the normally required 24 hour down time. There are some of the newer ovens that have the ability to clean with a very low temperature that is so low, it can't be used to kasher even if you do wait the 24 hours.
If you plan to use the self cleaning program to kasher your oven, it would be wise to check out this feature before you make a purchase.

breakfast in brooklyn

There used to be a Donut Man on 13th Avenue that served breakfast, but I believe that they closed a while ago. It was a greasy spoon place just like you'd see on TV, but it was decent food and a decent price for what it was.

kosher disney?

Many years ago I was in Orlando and I stayed at a Disney property. I ordered kosher meals and I received inferior quality TV dinners made by Meal Mart. Remember those terrible things? Being that I was staying at Disney property hotel, it was very convenient. I could order it from any location at any of the parks and they would have it delivered to me hot whenever and wherever I wanted it. Pretty cool, but the meals cost me $25.00 a piece!! Even if it was a decent meal, $25.00??
It really wasn't Disney's fault as there wasn't anything better to offer at the time. I'm sure that they've found something better by now.
In any case, be prepared to bring your own food or go shopping at one of the local supermarkets. We did that too.

hotel question/sabbath observance

The best thing would be not to have to go to an ER, even during the week, but it's only a prayer. In any case, all should be well.
As far as the washrooms there, IMHO, sometimes you just do what you need to do. God will understand.

hotel question/sabbath observance

There's a Double Tree hotel in Skokie that, due to its location, caters to a lot of Jewish events on Shabbos. They remodeled the entire building a few years ago and all of the public washrooms were built with automatic sinks and toilets. The cRc, which certifies their kosher kitchen, made them install at least one sink and toilet in each public washroom that the simcha visitors might use and also made sure that there was an entrance door that wasn't controlled by a sensor. There are even signs by the washrooms indicating that it has "manual flush" toilets. It must seem very strange to all of the non-Jews.

hotel question/sabbath observance

You can never cross the line if your only intentions are to learn. First, orthodox Jews don't shop on Shabbos, regardless of the sensors.
As far as inadvertently setting off a motion sensor, the first time might be unintentional, but one should still do their due diligence when going somewhere that may pose a problem later on Shabbos. You can't just close your eyes and claim ignorance.
I hope that this helps a little.

hotel question/sabbath observance

You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately, many hotels also use motion sensors to turn off the lights and air conditioner when you leave the room. You also need to check to make sure that your room isn't equipped with these sensors. if so, you would need to cover them so that they would become inactive.

hotel question/sabbath observance

I once stayed at a Hyatt hotel in Orlando. They catered to a Jewish clientele and had some rooms that had an actual key instead of a key card. When I checked in I asked for a keyed room and she said, "I
Oh, you want a kosher room"
I'm not sure if it was glatt.
