I can understand not being allowed to go to their concerts, but not being allowed to Daven with them? Very wrong.

hotel question/sabbath observance

The best thing would be not to have to go to an ER, even during the week, but it's only a prayer. In any case, all should be well.
As far as the washrooms there, IMHO, sometimes you just do what you need to do. God will understand.

hotel question/sabbath observance

There's a Double Tree hotel in Skokie that, due to its location, caters to a lot of Jewish events on Shabbos. They remodeled the entire building a few years ago and all of the public washrooms were built with automatic sinks and toilets. The cRc, which certifies their kosher kitchen, made them install at least one sink and toilet in each public washroom that the simcha visitors might use and also made sure that there was an entrance door that wasn't controlled by a sensor. There are even signs by the washrooms indicating that it has "manual flush" toilets. It must seem very strange to all of the non-Jews.

hotel question/sabbath observance

You can never cross the line if your only intentions are to learn. First, orthodox Jews don't shop on Shabbos, regardless of the sensors.
As far as inadvertently setting off a motion sensor, the first time might be unintentional, but one should still do their due diligence when going somewhere that may pose a problem later on Shabbos. You can't just close your eyes and claim ignorance.
I hope that this helps a little.

hotel question/sabbath observance

You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately, many hotels also use motion sensors to turn off the lights and air conditioner when you leave the room. You also need to check to make sure that your room isn't equipped with these sensors. if so, you would need to cover them so that they would become inactive.

hotel question/sabbath observance

I once stayed at a Hyatt hotel in Orlando. They catered to a Jewish clientele and had some rooms that had an actual key instead of a key card. When I checked in I asked for a keyed room and she said, "I
Oh, you want a kosher room"
I'm not sure if it was glatt.

Kosher Certified Canned Artichoke Hearts?

Actually, although the cRc does accept that certification on everything, they do accept the artichoke bottoms if they are packed in water, just not the hearts. Again, its the bug thing.

Chicagoland Rumors

The one down the street from the Allstate Arena opened years ago and I believe that it's still open. Keep in mind that not everything in their store is necessarily certified kosher.

First kosher in Dumbo

Understood. Thanks very much. I just figured that I was the only geographic insufficient person out there. I honestly never even heard of Dumbo. I first thought that it was a typo.

I already got it. I said that it's under the bridge.

First kosher in Dumbo

Although I live in Chicago, I still travel to the holy land, New York. I had to go to Google to find out what country Dumbo was in. Who would have thought that it's right there under the bridge in good old Brooklyn. Thanks Evan for the geography lesson. Please don't tell me that I'm the only one that didn't know where Dumbo was.

Kosher Certified Canned Artichoke Hearts?

I don't think that you'll find any accepted hashgacha that will accept artichoke hearts. Artichoke bottoms, yes, but not the hearts. It's a bug issue.

Pickled deckel

I wonder if it's the same cut of meat that I remember, but more likely is that you are good at cooking deckel, no matter what it is, and that's why you are getting your good results. A good cook can make shoe leather taste good.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I spoke to a manager at Mariano's and it appears that they did their homework, they just didn't expect the massive turnout for the grand opening. Supposedly this was their best and busiest opening yet. Let's hope that those that were turned off will give them a second chance.

Pickled deckel

I remember seeing two different cuts of beef called deckel. One was the brisket deckel that was the fatty part on top of the lean first cut brisket. The other was called brust deckel and was located near the neck of the cow. It's an inch or two thick at it's thickest point and was very stringy and not very tender. It was a good relatively inexpensive sub for brisket and was often used as a cheap fake brisket corned beef. Not my favorite cut of beef.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I'm sure that they did their homework but I've heard more bad reviews than positive ones, both on Chowhound and in the community. It's true that Jewel wasn't the best at the start, but they didn't have someone to cheat of of on the final exam. I hope that they realize their mistakes before it's too late. Most people won't give them a second chance, especially since they already have Jewel to fallback on.

New Mariano's in Skokie

I'm very disappointed with the last few posts. I was hoping that Mariano's would have been better prepared, especially with all the time that they had doing their research of the competition. I wonder if they even bothered consulting with some of the kosher consumers.

I heard the same thing. Besides the now usual fried and baked chicken, you can pick out the steak of your choice from the kosher meat department and they will cook it to order right there for you. You can either take it home or eat it at the tables set up in the store.
Mariano's is known for it's high quality and customer service and they can leave Jewel behind in the dust.

New Mariano's in Skokie

There's a new Mariano's Supermarket scheduled to open this coming Tuesday at the corner of Touhy and McCormick in Skokie. It will have a full fresh food center all certified by the cRc including fresh meats and fish, a sushi bar, an olive bar, a soup bar, a candy bar that includes a variety of fresh popcorn and a full service deli with meats and salads and a fresh bakery with breads and cakes. Their grocery section is set to be one of the best in the Chicago area.
I'm sure that they will give Jewel a run for their money.
