Maroni's in Northport, Long Island
Hi Phil and Kingfish - tough crowd! I have been to Jean George and was not impressed at all - my pal and I were dining among a bunch of lunching Japanese ladies! I felt like I was at some social tea! Not cool at all. The food was just "OK"....which was fine BUT we had 2 glasses of rosé brute, the waitress did not tell us they were $25 a glass!!! I must admit - we felt like idiots (and we also felt jacked!!!!)
Anyway - Maroni's...my wife and I went there and had some lovely dishes (agree - way overpriced) but the experience was pleasant. You must sit outside in the courtyard though. Inside felt much like a stuffed Jean George.
Also, comparing Northport to NYC is much like comparing NYC to - say - San Sebastian in Spain or Paris for that matter. There is ALWAYS something better. But if you are in Northport on a beautiful day - nothing compares (especially after a couple of prosecco's)
GOOD TIMES!
Korean Food in Nassau County?
There is a place diagonally across from Home Depot in Jericho (5 mins from Williston Park) that has Japanese and Korean BBQ. I have not tried it yet - it looks as if it is timidly introducing Korean BBQ to the area. It is a hard sell for the area, but it could work - especially if it is good.
Thin crust pizza in NW Nassau County?
Grimaldi's in Garden city is very good. Pizza margherita.
The new Luzzo's (westbury) can be great, but I think they bit off more than they can chew (no pun intended) with an oversized chain, sized restaurant. The service is bizarre and the other night they kep on spraying air freshener -a really floral one - gross. Pizza Diavlo
Bertucci's (I know it's a chain) but they are certified from Naples - so they are the real deal. Again, on a good night - it is very good. A bad night - not so much! Pizza bella venetzia or margherita
Ethnic restaurants: Nassau County North?
Tried Hummus World to day for lunch - great. I had the "schwarfel" - which had falafel and schwarma. The tumeric in the chicken was really unexpected - really tasty. Would definitely go back. Thanks for the referral.

Hi EZP.
As far as authentic Japanese - there are 3 we have found that are great and are the real deal. The others - IMO - are a terrible waste of money and benefit from the typical consumers lack of experience. When we look for a Japanese place, we want more than just raw fish - we rate it on the cooked food as well.
1.) Satsuki (Lynbrook): Some of the best sushi ever. The prepared hot dishes are superb - in particular the homemade gyoza, kushi katsu and beef tataki (hard to screw that up - but restaurants do!)
2.) Shiro - sushi bar only! (Carle Place) - The sushi here is top notch - in fact - we always see a mix of white folks, black folks and Japanese businessmen. Great stuff - excellent.
3.) Taka - (westbury) as I mentioned in my original post - the sushi is great - the prepared (berkshire pork) specials are delicious. Taka is not so cool, but I will give it one more try.
I will try the Orient in Bethpage – I live up near Hunan taste - maybe I will try that as well. I hate to admit it - but I think PF Changs has the best Chinese in Nassau County. I really, really want someone to prove me wrong! It is a gorgeous place - the food is really, really good. I know it is heresy in foodie circles to proclaim a chain as good - but I don't give a shit - I just want good food and am really insulted if I pay good money for lousy food.

Hi _ I am always on the prowl for unusual places in Nassau. Really good (and preferably really inexpensive) food. I have tried these places and they are good - the real deal. Any other suggestions are appreciated.
• Barraida (Mineola) - great Portugese wood charcoal BBQ
• Pollos el Paisa (Westbury) - Colombian
• Sripraphai (Wiliiston Park) - legendary Thai
• Heritage of India (New Hyde Park) - Indian - good but overpriced
• Rang Mahal (Hicksville) - Indian - excellent - but ridiculously overpriced
• Tangra Masala (New Hyde Park) - Indo/Chinese - excellent
• Masala Wok (Hicksville) - - Indo/Chinese - excellent
• Taka (Westbury) - Japanese - very good, but Taka is a sociopath, too bad
Is there any Chinese that doesn't suck? Something like Joe's Shanghai in Flushing? Or Korean? Or Indian places that are really good that are not stupid overpriced? What about Jamaican? And I do not consider Besito relevant to this discussion!
My wife is Japanese - so we have that covered. No Chinese or Korean sushi please!
Smoked Paprika in NY Metro Area
Believe it or not _ I found it at my local Stop and Shop in Carle Place, Long Island. Spice Island brand. It is good quality -- very chorizo-ee.

Sripraphai is opening a second branch in Williston Park
Went for lunch today - quite busy for being open less than 2 hours. Place looked great – food was amazing as expected.
Naples/Naples area seafood shacks? Help.
We love it - we have been going there for a number of years. We are contemporary architecture fans – so this place suits us well.
I must say the food quality has improved dramatically since last time we were there. Aura (breakfast) was very good - and the poolside grouper sandwich was a knockout - simple, clean and fresh.

That is a spot-on assessment - a fantasy seafood shack. It has potential to be amazing and a destination for sure. It will need work!
Have fun this weekend - hopefully the weather will cooperate!
NYC To Nassau?
Went last week - loved it - note - the pizza is TRUE Neopoletana style - the buffala mozzarella and the tomatoes are a bit watery - so the resulting crust is not crispy. I read this is exactly how it is in Naples (Naples at Table book).....Wines are terrific.

Hi _ Here is my report back. We only had time to check out Dixie Fish, Grouper and Chips and our regular visit to Steamer's,
My favorite is still Steamer's - the range of food and the quality is fantastic. Great stuff.
Grouper and Chips (we went to the one on 41 – Gulf Coast Grouper and Chips) and it was really good - a little greasy I must say - but really great. I would definitely go back.
Dixie Fish had the potential to be amazing - but it was really hot - the table was sticky – that said, the fish dip was great - and the location is amazing. I will definitely give it another shot. Plus, the band playing was really good. The people were really nice and friendly there. I want to love this place.
So - many thanks to all - we wil be back there in a couple of months and I will try the other places. My kids want to go to Truluck's this time. Great place.

Naples/Naples area seafood shacks? Help.
Hi, we are headed down to Naples Grande next week for a few days and I would love to find a seafood shack in the area. We have been to Steamers (in a strip mall) and it was very good. We will go this time – but we are looking for the old-school Florida fishshack (like Frenchies in Clearwater or Fourth St in St. Pete.
Florida has amazing seafood, and we look forward to it.
We are willing to drive up to 45 mins from Naples I suppose.
Any help is appreciated. -jm

NYC To Nassau?
This is excellent. Little by little we will get out of the 1980's. While I find there are some great places out here if you try really hard - it is generally frustrating. We have about 5 places that we frequent in Nassau – now that we are going to Huntington more, we are broadening our favorites - albeit slowly.
I have not tried any of the places you mentioned (except Sriprathai) - but I will.
I can't wait for Sriprathai – it is 5 minutes from us.
