Rome and Venice Restaurants- On the Cheap?
In terms of Rome:
Da Giovanni is great and extremely cheap. I'm talking 4 euro for a pasta dish. If people suggest Da Enzo, don't go, Da Giovanni is way better and Da Enzo is highly overrated and more expensive.
Taverna Cestia is one of my favorite places in Rome. Most pastas are under 10 euro. They have the best cacio e pepe in Roma that I have found.
Venice
Yeah, a meat specialist is definitely not what I am looking for in venice, there is enough of that in Rome. In terms of places that are amazing for fish (which is something I am deprived of here in Rome) you think that Dalla Marisa (during one of their meat days) for dinner and 4 feri for lunch are good choices?
Venice
Thank you both for your replies. Dalla Marisa looks like the place to go for one of the nights. Thank you PBSF for differentiating between the two sets of restaurants. It was unclear in the book Osterie d'Italia by slow food the differences between their two lists. I think we will definitely have to check out Cavatappi as well. What is La Bitta like?
Venice
Going to Venizia this weekend. I have two dinners and one lunch that I am looking to find places for. My list thus far is narrowed down to these restaurants. What do you think?
Alla Botte
Antica Adelaide
Ca'D'Oro Detta Alla Vedova
Dalla Marisa
La Bitta
Also
Cavatappi
La Mascareta
and
Al Prosecco.
Thanks in advance,
Saul

Best Pizza Bianca in Roma
I am on the quest for the best pizza bianca in roma. I live on the aventino but I go everywhere in the city. What is your favorite place(s)? I thank you in advance.
Da Luigi Roma
I have heard good things from Romans about a restaurant called Trattoria Da Luigi. Its on the Piazza Sforza in Rome. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about it, or if they have been there. It has a mix of roman cuisine and other classics from around Italy.
Thanks in advance.
Restaurants in and around the Aventino
Thanks for the advice, you are always extremely helpful.
Restaurants in and around the Aventino
Yes! I am excited for the program.
What were your favorite places to go to on a casual night, when you didn't want to go far or spend lots of money?
Thanks for the advice.
Restaurants in and around the Aventino
We are living in the Aventino, for six months starting in February. What are your favorite places to go? We will be on a student's budget so cheaper places are preferable, but that is not to say we will not have our splurge nights.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate all the advice I can get.
Classic Roman Dishes
I love offal. I'm actually also living in the testaccio area for six months so that is perfect. Thanks for the tip ttoommy.
Classic Roman Dishes
When you think of Roman food, what is the first dish that comes to mind? What is your favorite roman specific dish? What dishes should one be looking for in Rome, that are specific just for Rome?
Chilean Food Book
I am spending the next six months living in Santiago, and I love food. Are there any good books about the foods of chile. I really want to learn more about the regional cuisines and local specialties. I have been searching high and low for some written guidance regarding this. Or any excellent books on the food of chile or santiago in general. Also what is your favorite book on chile in general. Thanks so much in advance.
Ordering in Rome
Thanks Summer that is definitely advice that I will weigh heavily. Often how comfortable one feels at a restaurant is undervalued. I agree that it is definitely an important factor as to how much I enjoy my meal.
Ordering in Rome
Is it seen as rude not to order three courses at a restaurant.? Say you and a friend want to share three or four. In a number of guidebooks that I have looked at it seems to be portrayed as proper to order three each.
Also what is the norm when it comes to finishing an entire plate? The portions in Rome can often be quite large, and room needs to be saved for other courses. But I don't want to stick out more than I already do as a foreigner.
What is a good sized tip to leave at restaurants?
Hole in The Walls in Rome
That is an excellent good point. Quality of ingredients is always a big factor.
There is nothing worse then getting a dish that is completely poorly executed. I'm sorry that happened. But I have worked in a number of restaurants in the States, and I don't necessarily agree with the consistency argument. Often in a bigger restaurant I find since so many plates are going out it is harder to have consistent quality control. While in a smaller setting the head chef can personally look over every dish to make sure that they are to his/her specifications. I guess that this just boils down to issues regarding the management in the kitchen.
What is a good food book that you would recommend that is a good guide for more middle of the road restaurants in Rome?
Hole in The Walls in Rome
Thanks so much for your reply. I really appreciate the good advice on Downie's book and Rome in general.
I'm really interested with what you said about not being sure that the best renditions of Roman food are in the smallest simplest places. Why is it that you feel this way?
From what I have read and been taught about Italian Food in general, that it essentially is really simple fresh home cooking. So i am curious as to why that sort of cuisine would not show up in the smallest simplest places?
Hole in The Walls in Rome
Thanks ebernard, this is exactly the kind of restaurant I am looking for. It sounds great.
Hole in The Walls in Rome
Right of course. But there is definitely a certain attitude that people can have similar to one that most chefs have in portland, where they are really doing what they are for the love of the food not to get rich.
I actually have Terroir coming in the mail right now. I am hoping that it will be really helpful.
Hole in The Walls in Rome
I am in search of all mom and pop hole in the wall restaurants in Rome. I love family run restaurants who are just in it for the love of food. What are your favorite places like this?
In Rome for 6 Months
I am gearing up for a semester abroad in Rome. I have cooked in a high end Italian restaurant in Berkeley called Eccolo. So I have high expectations. I have a huge soft spot for salumi, and hole in the walls. There are plenty of posts about the high end places in rome, I want to hear about the local off the beaten path gems.
Thank you so much for your help I am looking forward to what people come up with.
