Where to buy shiso in Edmonton/ Calgary?
Thanks everyone. Good tisp. I haven't seen any at T&T (WEM) but it is not a staple produce.
Will look this weekend.
Where to buy shiso in Edmonton/ Calgary?
A little late replying...but thank you. Will look for them.
YEG Pho
Just wanted to add that Co Do Hue's has better Bun Bo Hue than Pho... It is a big serving.
Thai Binh serves Bun Bo Hue soups only on Fridays and weekends, freshness ensues. Pho there is also decent.
I am also in the King's Noodle camp.
Where to buy shiso in Edmonton/ Calgary?
I love shiso (Japanese Perilla) but having trouble finding this herb in Alberta - except occasionally at Japanese restaurants. I have seen seen seeds for sale in LA but for obvious reasons I couldn't bring them back. Actually, don't even know if you can grown them in this climate.
Anybody know where one can buy shiso in Edmonton or Calgary?
What about growing them here? Thank you.
Q Haute Cuisine-Calgary
I think Q Haute is consistently good (food and service) and would be considered a high-end restuarant. I have not been to Rush but have been to Muse. The view and ambiance is also excellent. The last time I ate there was back in March though.
You can check their website for their menu- http://www.qhautecuisine.com/
Kabuki Sushi & Grill
I agree. Ordered the deluxe sashimi (25 pieces) thinking that it would have a good variety. It was very standard...actually less than standard fare. 8 pieces of salmon, 8 pieces of tuna, 4 pieces of tako, 4 pieces of red tuna and something resembling chop chop filling (scallops and tobiko). The fish was either not quite defrosted or defrosted in such a way that it felt mushy. The cuts were thick (if you care for that) and strangely rough around the edges?? Either they need to get better fish or invest in better knives. The special makis were better compared to their sashimi offering.
The decor is neat with the sakura "tree" in the middle and clean.
All in all, not the worst place I have been to but mediocre at best.
Diners, Drive-ins and Dives in Edmonton
I think of the Commodore on Jasper Ave. Cheap, greasy spoon, diner type of spot. I find it charming. You can have campbell soup and jello too. Massive milkshakes. Also, they have a small Western-styled Chinese menu. Oh and it is cash only, of course!
Edmonton Recommendation Please - 50th birthday dinner
Went to Il Pasticcio for a Christmas party before - lively Italian restaurant. They bring food out on platters, served family style. Good service and food.
Favourite things to buy at the Italian Centre EDM
Their sandwiches (spicy)
Pancetta, prosciutto
Any kind of cheese
Bread
Balsamic vinegar
Schweppes Bitter Lemon
Dim Sum Calgary and Edmonton?
Great! I am glad you had a chance to try it!
I felt the same way about the XLB fillings, but it will do while in Alberta.
(Just saw this thread on the board again just now, hense the late response.)
If you are up in Edmonton next time, you can try Old Szechuan for something a little different from usual Cantonese fare.
Edmonton - Where can I find a good bottle of sake?
Check the Liquor Depot (I am not sure if it was a depot or barn...) in Oliver Square. I don't frequent it but I was in there some time last year and was surprised by the selection they have in stock. Good luck.
Edmonton – quick after work food to go
There is a Caffe Sorrentinos In South Common - decent soups, salads, pasta or panini combos. Ample parking, quick deli style service.
Zinc at the Art Gallery of Alberta - a huge disappointment
Dined here a few nights ago as well, and went in with low expectations due to the mediocre reviews. I thought everything was fine, not fantastic but not terrible either. The server was not overly attentive. Had the beef cheek starter and was slightly surprised by the large portion. The flavour was very good. The tart part of the dish I didn't get because it was some kind of crusty bun covered with leeks and muchroom in a madeira sauce. The cod was cooked just right, the sauce had a very subtle flavour which may be considered bland by some. The fennel and wild boar salad underneath was tasty enough.
All in all, I agree with Dan G that it was OK but not up to the level of other places in this price range. I do hope it improves as I do enjoy the restaurant space.
Edmonton RROTM - March discussion
Re: Mexico Lindo. I was there on one occasion early last year. The servers (owners) were very friendly and helpful as well. I can't remmeber what I had for entree but really enjoyed the churros + mexican hot chocolate for dessert. Hot churros dusted with sugar and hot choc with a slight kick.
I am in no way an expert in Mexican cuisine but it was definitely not tex-mex. Having tried fresh greasy dolce leche churros in Central America - I wouldn't say their churros are comparable but I think they came close. Perhaps the Mexican variety is slightly differnt.
Shanghai Food in Chicago: Soup Dumplings
Edmonton, as in Alberta? Look up Shanghai Grill out on the west end, near Mayfield Inn. It's in an obscure area. The XLB and dishes are pretty decent for Alberta.
Dim Sum Calgary and Edmonton?
Foodkarma, the rest of the Shanghai dishes I have tried were okay. The drunken chicken (cold appetizer) was very good, so was the stirred fried long beans. They have a cold noodle dish that was good too. I personally did not try the house made beef dumplings but a relative who is Shanghainese said it was decent. I tried one of the ducks, I have forgotten which one it was underwhelming. I did not try the pork belly, would have to try that next time.
Note, oddly they are closed on Wednesdays.
Anyone tried the brunch at Sage (River Cree)?
I read about the brunch offering (new?) at Sage recently:
http://communities.canada.com/edmontonjournal/blogs/eatmywords/archive/2010/02/02/brunch-at-sage.aspx
Anyone on the board tried it? I like the flexibility of buffet and ordering off the menu.
Dim Sum Calgary and Edmonton?
foodkarma, I have tried the XLBs at Peking Garden and thought it was also the "best" in Alberta until I tried the ones at Shanghai Grill (west end Edmonton near Mayfield Inn). The wrapper is thin and filled with soup and a choice of pork filling or pork with crab filling.
If you happen to be in Edmonton, give it a try. You can google the address.
Of course, no comparison to Vancouver.
Unusual Eggs Benny? (YYC)
RE: Avenue Diner - it is always nice when the server asks you how you like your eggs bennys and serves them as such! :D
Unusual Eggs Benny? (YYC)
Was at Moxie's on Sunday, they have eggs benny with scallop and crab cakes, and one with smoked havarti and pancetta bacon.
Unfortunately, the eggs were cooked throughout, didn't look poached to me, rather looked like they put them in a cup and nuked them. The staff did come back with 2 new eggs, cooked in the same manor but with slightly runnier centers. The experience could vary with different location though.
Unusual Eggs Benny? (YYC)
AKA in Bridgeland ( pretty much across from Diner Delux) has eggs beeny on house made brioche. Choice of pork belly, house-cured salmon, bacon or sausage. I have only tried teh pork belly and cured salmon ones, they were both well done.
pearl sugar and Belgian waffles
FYI, I have picked up a package of Lars Pearl Sugar at Ikea before.
Buddha's Veggie Cgy: now serving meat
That is a bit disconcerning, "fusion" scares me.
Do you know if they will still serve vegetarian dim sum on the weekends?
Jasper, AB - Recommendations?
I was in Jasper back in August and had a pretty decent meal at La Fiesta. Large portions and you can get jugs of Sangria. The locals (a server from another restaurant) also recommended that place. Fiddle River is a bit more candle lit type of dinner restaurant. But it is better known for their seafood. Had a couple of drinks and appies at Evil Dave's - the menu and ambience should please a big group of guys.
We stayed at the Amethyst Lodge and one morning missed their breakfast service downstairs - the concierge directed us to Papa George's down the street at the Astoria. (http://papageorgesrestaurant.com) We were pleasantly surprised by the breakfast. - and it was busy! The restaurant also has a fairly impressive wine cellar at the back. Although we didn't have supper there, it looks promising. See website.
Won Jung Gak Korean Restaurant in Edmonton
Hey there, I have been there a number of times. They serve Korean style Chinese food.
If you like their black bean noodles (jjajang myeon) and spicy soup noodles (jjanpong)equally, they actually have a bowl that serves BOTH. It comes in a bowl with a divider in the middle, so you can sample both. It's fantastic in the winter. The fried chicken goes down great with a little bit of soju (Korean rice wine, harsh stuff) or beer.
Another tip, in the summer, they serve a number of different cold noodle dishes. The problem is, a lot of these seasonal specials are written in Korean posted on the wall. Will have to point and ask the server to tell you what they are.
Edmonton RROTM - November: Zaika
I haven't had the opportunity to try their buffet but have ordered a la carte and take outs - both occasions won positive reviews with dining companions. I also liked that they didn't "dumb" down the spiciness of the vindaloo we ordered. The server did ask us how much spiciness we can handle though.
I was initially attracted by their selections of appetizers, they have a few items that differ from your usual pakora and samosa. Having visited India in the past, I have cravings for the gol gappa and papri chaat from time to time (they are essentially snacks sold by street vendors). If you don't want to venture out to an East Indian grocery to put together some of these, you can get some at this place.
The Bothy Wine & Whisky Bar, Edmonton
Yup, they were at Indulgence and also at Rocky Mountain Food/ Wine Fest.
At Rocky Mtn, they served a braised pork belly dish as well as cured salmon on rye.
i am looking forward to sampling their haggis as well!
The Bothy Wine & Whisky Bar, Edmonton
I have been looking forward to the opening of this establishment since hearing of it at Slow Foods Edmonton. My buddy and I went for a late supper and wine and some how ended up having some whisky too. You are right Bob Mac, Doug is passionate and very knowledgeable! We had a fantastic time and will definitely go back for more whisky and try the meat pies.
Tried the tomato and smoked bacon soup (of the day) - which was steaming hot and very creamy. It almost reminded me of the smoked tomato soup from Fuze.
We also had wine flights and ordered charcuterie - the menu has a nice and varied selection, and always nice to see items from local suppliers. The plate came with a myriad of accompaniments and warm bread.
The wine bar is definitely something - it is HIGH TECH, very cool.
There is a cellar room at the back of the restaurant (the wine and spirit list still in the works) but didn't get a chance to peek in.
I mentioned Haggis in passing but did not ask if it is made in house - sounds like they are planning to have it on the menu. At least, they would like to have that in time for Robbie Burns Day...and possibly other Burns related celebration in the works. :D
