Prepared foods at Compare Roxboro Rd. Durham

I have tried the empanadas and very much like the beef, the chicken is fine, too. There are decent, albeit overly cooked carnitas. Nice shortcut for homemade tacos. We tried uncooked bulk beef chorizo from the meat counter and while it was tasty, it had far too much gristle for me. The bakery is a trip. Nothing flavorwise that rocks my world yet, but they are almost cartoonishly fun to look at. Bottom line, try the beef empanadas. And the green sauce from Mami Nora's just around the corner is a great topping - MN's chicken was too salty for me but the sauces go with so much.

Looking for decent Bahn Mi in Raleigh, Durham, NC area.

Believe it, only check their minimum. I do large group catering fairly often.

And another enthusiastic vote for Spize. They deliver to Duke, the owner is very gracious, and the baguettes are wonderful: each bite a little different, and very fresh and flavorful throughout.

Semi-Annual Trek to Saxapahaw -- Any Changes?

We have had 2 disappointing visits recently to the general store, both due to poor management decisions. The first, we stood for over an hour on a busy Sunday after ordering, while other diners were called to pick up theirs. No one - including the owner, who was present - noticed that this seemed unusual. We finally asked, and they told us, without a shrivel of remorse, that they must have given our orders to someone else. The rest of our party was waiting for us on the patio while their food went cold.

The last time (yep) we witnessed one of the cook staff brushing his teeth in the kitchen sink. That, and the weaselly ala carte charging ($3 extra for 6 cubes of non-duck-fat "fries"? Aka a red potato and a half?). Bye, SGS. We won't be back.

Food festivals July 17-18?

We're trying to decide between Taste of River North and the Lincoln Park Block Party on Sunday afternoon. If anyone has been to either/both I'd love to hear a report. We love street fairs. Thanks!

You got to be kidding me (Crooks Corner, Chapel Hill, NC)

Sounds like a reasonable version, too bad the versions we've encountered held very little seasoning. Yet another in a series of off nights = just not worth it anymore. Plus, it seems to need a good cleaning/sweeping. Always with the food on the floor!

I completely agree, and lament that their shrimp & grits is constantly mentioned in don't-miss-in-NC lists. It's subpar, bland and inauthentic - you can do better in your own kitchen! The place is highly overrated in the (national) press; locals are substantially underwhelmed. So sorry you wasted time, money and enthusiasm. Next time in the area, you'll do far better at ACME, Elaine's, Lantern, Jujube, Neal's Deli...and that's just CH/Carrboro!

Have been in Greensboro for 2.5 years - still can't find the unique?

GSOYankee, it's not exactly unique but I've always enjoyed meals at the Green Valley Grill in the O.Henry. I could conceivably dine solo (I'm female) in the lovely main or other room.

DBGB or Balthazar for brunch? Please help me choose!

We had brunch at DBGB last Sunday and the food was fantastic, the room, a bit odd. The bloody mary tasted as if each component were made in-house, in a good way; the matzoh ball soup broth was silky, sublime. My blood sausage over scallion mashed potatoes with two perfectly poached eggs in quenelle form, ala elongated ovals (?) was pure, sophisticated-baby-comfort food. The charcuterie plate was good and generous, and the cassis-beer-yogurt ice cream sang. The room is sort of a weird muddy hue, relieved only by the lovely copper pots around the perimeter. But, I loved our first and only late-night visit to Balthazar, so maybe you can do both?

Planning Meals for New York in December: La Grenouille, Craft, Jean Georges.. so many to pick from and not too many days!

Hi, I'm new here. Why avoid La Grenouille on Saturday night? I was planning my first trip there on a Saturday in October!
