Hostess Snow Balls

They're baaaa--aaack. And just for Halloween...they're so orange they GLOW!!! Anywhere you find Hostess Twinkies and cupcakes they'll have Snoballs, too.

Good Tea Service

Tea and Sympathy. I went there on a first date....and we've been married for over 8 years now.

Shopsin's in the Essex Street Market

We went there, but it was closed for the day. But just by looking at it -- and the new menu -- it's not the Shopsin's we knew and loved. At all.

Best Cupcakes in NYC?

Sugar Sweet Sunshine, in my opinion, has yet to be topped. But they do have one serious oversight -- no coconut cupcakes! In fact, this seems to be a real problem around town. Wuzzup? It's a classic! We had to schlep to Brooklyn's Two Little Red Hens to get them for our wedding -- worth it, but surely Manhattan can start producing them, too.

Just to round out your party choices, Burgers & Cupcakes has some interesting choices. How about some fairy cupcakes, for example?

Red Velvet Cake

I think the best red velvet is at Sugar Sweet Sunshine. In fact, I think everything they make is the best.

easy, cheap eats near Madison Square Park

I love Eisenberg's, too, but if you're looking for some with a few more things on the menu -- or even just a bigger table -- the Comfort Diner is just across 23rd Street.

Two Little Red Hens did the cupcakes for our wedding! Why didn't I think of them?!? Worth the schlep out to Brooklyn. Thanks!

Midtown burgers for gang of 15 year old girls

Burger Heaven -- there are a few of them mid-town. Not pretentious, fine for a big (chatty) group, and you won't flinch when the check comes. Be sure to ask for their red relish!

Neighborhood butchers

For anyone reading this list after April 2007, Kurowycky is now a thing of the past. According to a New York Times interview with the owner there just weren't enough customers between their big ham seasons (Easter and Christmas). Hey, I did my part. This is a heartbreaker.

Hostess Snow Balls

You may be right -- they may not ship them in the summer. But I promise the next time I see them in Manhattan I'll report back. In the meantime:

Tips for an "elegant Sunday brunch" in Manhattan?

Ouest?

Hostess Snow Balls

I agree -- the pink ones taste the best. My sister and I used to fight over them. A hundred years ago, when I was growing up, the package had one white and one pink Snowball. I'm not sure when this happened, but at some point both Snowballs became pink. (This might have brought harmony to our home, or my sister and I would have found something else to fight over. Icing roses were another battlefield, but I digress.) For certain holidays -- Halloween, for example -- they now come in special colors. But the pink ones still taste the best.

I was at Economy Candy on Tuesday -- not a Snowball in sight. Wherever they sell the classic two packs of Hostess cupcakes and Twinkies (not the boxes) they usually have Snowballs on the display. I can vouch for this, because this question ignited a major hunger for Snowballs in our home. If you can't find them, it might be because we got there first.

Where's your favorite cheesecake bakery? [moved from Manhattan board]

The layer of sponge cake, Junior's trademark, is under most -- but not all -- of their cheesecakes. Here's a link to their description of it:

East Village/LES Authentic Italian...

Lanza's is a good choice. (I believe the sign out front now says "Sal Anthony's.") It's on 1st Avenue, between 10th and 11th, east side. For dessert, cross the street. Veniero's on 11th Street has killer Italian pastries (tables in the back).

Lanza's is a red tablecloth kind of place -- charming but not terribly fancy. I would take clients there, but not the ones who are looking for glamour. Veniero's is a bakery -- a bakery that arguably the best Italian pastries in the City. The East Village is less than fancy, and these choices reflect that atmosphere.

Cheap eats in NYC

"Cheap Eats" is actually the cover story of last week's 'Time Out NY.' Here's the link:

The categories are: The Basics, International, Gourmet, Dessert, and Free Eats.

When a slice is just not enough, where do you go? I know everyone raves about Junior's, but I'm not crazy about the layer of spongecake -- it's too soggy for me. I prefer a graham cracker crust.

I can tell you where I've had the worst cheesecake -- the otherwise wonderful Stand on 12th. Are you sitting down...it came in a glass. Now I am craving the real thing.

Thick Malted Milkshakes

Indeed there is -- the Lexington Candy Store. It's on the corner of 77th and Lex. You can't miss it; it looks like a place that has malteds.

really good old fashioned marble cake, crumbcake?

Better late than never -- Moishe's.

Warm Brownie with Ice Cream

I had a wonderful one the other night: Stand, 24 East 12th Street (between University and Fifth). Whatever you do, do not order the cheesecake. It comes in a glass.

Hostess Snow Balls

Do I remember them!?! They're a staple! You can get them at most Bodegas.

Does anyone remember the Tiptoe Inn?

It was a great kosher-style deli on the UWS. When I was a kid my parents used to take us there as a treat. Their cherry cheesecake was a standout, and I've never seen anything like it anywhere else. It was in a pie crust, with a lattice crust on top -- a shiny cookie-like crust. Has anyone had anything like it lately? If so -- where?

New England fried fish in nyc?

Molly's does a great fish and chips, with an ale batter. (Third Avenue, between 22nd and 23rd.)

Top 5 Burgers

A guilty pleasure -- the red relish at Burger Heaven. The burger is average, but the relish is delish.

Best tuna fish salad in nyc?

Eisenberg's, hands down.

Top 5 Burgers

Two seconds after I read "toasted marshmallow milkshake" I was on the phone. We're going there tonight! My husband loves the idea of a soda with Cel-Ray and strawberry ice cream. I can't wait!

Birthday Italian or Mexican Restaurant?

I'm stunned -- we've gone there for years and have never had a problem. I've never heard a word about it that wasn't glowing. I wonder what happened!

fun lunch spot near midtown

Fun...PrimeBurger? Very 1950s NYC -- it's the City's version of a drive-in.

Top 5 Burgers

I need to know -- what is a Toasted Marshmallow Shake? It sounds like heaven in a glass. It's always good to have another thing to do with toasted marshmallows...
