The end of haagen-daz

No ice crystals at all in the Vietnamese coffee I made yesterday. Only problem is, the i/c maker doesn't make nearly enough product for me.

Wow, they didn't even wait for the ink to dry on the press release. Pathmark is already advertising a SALE!!!!!! -- two 14 oz. containers of H/D for SIX DOLLARS!!!

Wowee zowee, what a bargain!

Good thing I stocked up on 16 oz. pints at $2.00 and $2.50 each. Now I get to sit back and laugh at all the consumers who will think $6.00 for two 14 oz. containers is a SALE!

Hysterical.

which products have you stopped buying because of price increases or volume decreases?

I know that, thew, that's my point to those who insist it is not. I reread my post and of course you are correct.

Not only is it raising the price, but it is duplicity on the part of the stupid consumer who is happy that the price isn't being raised, when in fact it is being raised with the lowering of quantity. And the further lowering of quantity is a continued raising of price. And then the manufacturer will come out with a PR release that due to the pressures on them, that they just HAVE to raise prices on their 4X lowered quantity items, BUT the quality won't be reduced.

So, if the consumer is stupid enough to buy all this, they are more than welcome to it.

>>(Of course, then you'd be complaining that they're charging more for the same product and you refuse to buy it based on THAT principle.)

Actually, no you can't predict how I post at any moment in time. But if you want to continue the personal bashing that is taking place in this thread, be my guest.

Oh, and be my guest in continuing to pay more for less product.

why are Yelp reviewers so bad?

There's room in the world for both sites. Bottom line, Yelp is less moderated. This site has its merits. Balance the two, and then go to the restaurant yourself, since no one has the same taste as you do, and then weigh in on the restaurant at one or both sites yourself.

Easy peasy

Why do most people like Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme Donuts

But Passadumkeg, unless you're making your own donuts or buying them at a farm stand at a very high price, what do you do for donuts? And if you're looking for a non young urban professional cup of coffee, and Dunkin Donuts makes the best non young urban professional cup of coffee around in Westchester, aren't you tempted by their 'buy two donuts and a medium cup of coffee' for a certain price deal?

I add sugar to sugar and get two glazed donut sticks with my coffee. Yum.

Tarry Lodge reviewed in the NY Times

steve h, there really isn't a fourth floor in Tarry Lodge. Try it out, it really is a Very Good restaurant, as the reviewer notes. Be sure to try the clam pizza, it is outstanding. If you like Manhattans, they make an excellent one.

Their service is very good and the parking is free. Taken together, I'm surprised Tarry Lodge only got a Very Good. Especially in view of the dearth of reallllly good restaurants in Westchester.

I can't wait to go back. Oh and when I asked, they never heard of us.

Haagen-Daz carton size chg. but no price change

What an idea. Make the switch here to metric and the consumer wouldn't even know which way was up! All KINDS of change could then be perpetrated while the consumer was kept in the dark, and happy for it.

But they're reaching for a pint or a half gallon and coming up short. Very short.

Not everybody wins. But the manufacturer wins and that's the whole point.

Wow, what a GOOD point, Orchid64. However, there wouldn't be many posts left if what you suggested were to take place.

cashew cookie recipe?

tempehtempeh, I smashed up TJ's sweet and salty (cashews mostly) trail mix and used it in a Mexican wedding cookie that I found in tastespotting. The novelty (duh!) of this particular wedding cookie was that it was flattened, and oddly enough, it made a difference! Well, to me. I ate them all.

Here is the recipe. I tried it with both the cashew mix and pistachios and it was delish both times:

Apple Meyer Lemon Tart recipe?

Not sure I'd like apples and lemons mixed, but you never know.

How about a lemon tart and an apple pie?

The end of haagen-daz

You're right, CrazyOne, isn't it sad? But, that's how companies do what they do.

foodsmith, the only alternative may just be to make it yourself. 3 ingredients and 35 minutes later, an alleged (I never got as far as measuring, next time) quart and a half of better than H/D coffee ice cream. Try it, if you have an ice cream maker.

I can just imagine, after all the hoopla, what the cost per ounce to me is, but hey, at least I am not getting less product for more money!

...........I wonder if they have put out an ice cream maker that makes a REAL half gallon???

Poor Krisy Kreme, a fad which fizzled like a sparkler.

Personally, I like Dunkin Donuts.

I did KT and it is gone.

Ooops, no it isn't. Same as the answer to Miss Needle. The answer involves the words 'thieving' and 'duplicity' and I would be chewing my cud.

Reallllly. Sounds like a new mission for me.

I tend to bypass sorbet because it smacks of 'healthy', but it sounds like I'll have to try them. Thanks.

Cuban in Port Chester?

nbermas, I don't know where you are but take a look at the thread on cuban sandwiches. The bakery at four corners in Pelham makes an outstanding cuban sandwich.

You have a store near you, MMRuth? I guess it's fortunate I don't -- they only have a limited amount of flavors in preackaged pints, while their choice of flavors is awesome.

OK, foodsmith, you made up my mind -- I bought the cream for cream scones but am going to make the Vietnamese coffee from Perfect Scoop instead.

My favorites were Dulce De Leche and Creme Brulee. I'll miss them both.

Ciao Bella has no creme brulee, but their dulce de leche is very good. Different from the dearly departed H/D, but very good all the same.

I've never made macaroni and cheese with anything less than a pound of macaroni and enough cheese to choke a horse.

But hey, if some people want to skimp on the macaroni in their macaroni and cheese, that's their choice. Interesting how even less macaroni for more money is defendable to some.

True, I had to hunt down creme brulee and only found it in Morton Williams. I now probably have all that is left in pints of that flavor -- jk.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Outside of the key lime, which I found weird, they all seemed creamy to me. I too loved H/D but they are dead to me now.

If you make your own, check out 'Perfect Scoop' - the Vietnamese coffee is insanely easy and delish.

foodsmith, they also boast about the painful decision they just made and their reduction being only a couple of spoonfuls, so you should not be surprised.

Have you tried Ciao Bella gelato in pints? Expensive, but very good and still a pint.

'I' need to look for other recipes??? What a perfect example of the power of the press. Ronzoni gives less product for more money and 'I' need to look for other recipes.

I come from three generations of Italians who would laugh out loud at a macaroni recipe that called for eight ounces or less.

I'll correct my statement -- all decent Italian recipes call for a pound of macaroni.

Of course it isn't silly, it's quite real as you note.

Instead of H/D, vvvindaloo, you might try Ciao Bella espresso gelato. It's stronger than H/D, but for the moment, it's still a pint.

which products have you stopped buying because of price increases or volume decreases?

Actually, they're reducing the quantity rather than raising the price.

Macaroni is now sold in boxes under a pound, requiring two boxes to make a recipe calling for a pound of macaroni.

Tuna has shrunk, as has the mayo, and no doubt the relish. The prices have stayed the same or have gone up, so people are paying more for less.

Guldens took away the former 1 pound plus jars of mustard in most supermarkets, replacing them with a shiny toy for those not paying attention, i.e., a squeeze bottle. Per ounce, I'm sure the cost is laughable. I managed to find the former pound plus jars and stocked up.

Of course, as more and more manufacturers lower the quantity while keeping the price the same, it will be harder and harder to find the products in their original form.

Not a problem, as I've noted I have no problem with anyone who wants to pay more money for less product.

To answer your question, and as you know, Turkey Hill, Edy's and now Haagen Dazs.

Thanks for the callout, alkapal.
