Sensuous's Profile

Foods that unreasonably gross you out...

I could never eat a crawfish. They used to crawl up my driveway after a heavy rain and a few would occasionally get stuck in the garage and scare the daylights out of me. This was in South Carolina.
I can't work with a whole raw chicken even though I have no problem with chicken pieces. The whole bird makes me woozy feeling. I don't like to see those chickens in markets riding round and around on a rotisserie either.

Rehoboth Winter Weekend

All I know about Shorebreak is what I learn from Rehoboth Foodie, laststandchili. Maybe this summer it'll take off after a bumpy start last year. Their menu is very fancy! I'll check it out soon. The food has got to be great with the Eden people in charge.

This is Polar Bear Plunge weekend in Rehoboth. Grotto Pizza and Thrasher's will put all others to shame with the Polar Bears.

The Nage classes would be wonderful. I have enjoyed the chef's demonstrations at our farmer's markets.

Here's the foodie's review of Shorebreak Lodge: http://www.rehobothfoodie.com/index.php/Rehoboth-Beach-Reviews/American/Traditional/shorebreak-lodge.html

Rehoboth Winter Weekend

I can't believe I've never been to the Bridgeville Jimmy's. I have had their delicious food at catered events though. By the way, Nage does amazing catering too.
The bar at Henlopen City Oyster House is always packed no matter the day or time or season.
I like Cafe Azafran too. Oh wow their coffee is good.
I'm so glad you had a good time here, laststandchili.

Funniest Thing a Server Said to You

That is funny. It reminds me of a similar slip of the tongue my mother once made to a hostess. Mom and I were hoping we'd be seated in a booth rather than a table and when our lady presented us with a very nice one my mother smiled at her and said "oh wow, nice boobs! Booth! No, I meant nice booth! Oh but you do have nice boobs." We all three laughed until we cried.

Panera Bread v. grocery store bakery

I never pass a Panera without stopping for a large sourdough loaf to bring home.

Funniest Thing a Server Said to You

I have a reptile sister-in-law.

What do you do with canned salmon? Not salmon patties.

Canned salmon mixed in with scrambled eggs and served with grits is a delicious meal.

beyond oats--any hot breakfast grains ideas?

Grits with sharp cheddar cheese is my favorite. This was my breakfast every morning for many years.
Cream of Wheat is good too. My husband likes it with sugar but I prefer it with butter, salt, and black pepper.

Cilantro for authentic Mex in Rehoboth Beach

Hey Lewes. Thanks. I will give it a try soon. I like Giant.
Twelve days and I have not had one potato chip!

What are your favorite things to mix into oatmeal?

At home I like steel-cut oatmeal with walnuts, raisins, bananas, and a little brown sugar.
In a local restaurant I recently had a delicious bowl topped with strawberries, blueberries, almonds, and bananas. This healthy breakfast with a small black coffee came at the price of $11 with the tip! I was shocked. Isn't it a shame what good food costs?

Cilantro for authentic Mex in Rehoboth Beach

Here is a link to their menu: http://capegazette.villagesoup.com/business/el/cilantro-cocina-de-mexico/141922 I went by there to give the corn a try but found them closed for the season. I will look forward to it in the Spring.
The arugula salad with orange and kiwi also sounds good. Lewes, I wanted to ask you if you know of a good salad bar in the area.
I am determined to make healthier food choices this year.
Thanks.

Cleaned, Blue Crabs in Raleigh area?

Favourite gifts to receive (food related)

My husband likes a particular Jack Daniel's that is very expensive so I usually pick that up for him this time of year. I like to receive wine or champagne but I really like cookbooks also.

rice cooker recommendations?

I have one by Rival that is very simple to use and to clean but I know it wouldn't keep rice warm for two days. It works well though and was very inexpensive. It has only one button. The indicator light says either COOK or KEEP WARM. It has an inner pot that lifts out, a plastic ladle, and a plastic measuring cup. I measure the rice with the cup and fill it with water to the corresponding line marked inside the pot, cover it with the lid, press the button, and forget about it. It makes up to three cups of uncooked rice.

95 -- NC lunch stop -- meatless recs needed

The Summerton Diner in South Carolina serves great southern food, is definitely worth the detour and is easy to find. They don't take credit cards.

Rascal's, New Castle DE

Here are two articles about Rascal's.

I learned my lessons...

That sounds good to me, LeoLioness. I do want to one day dine at Art Smith's restaurant in DC. That drive is not bad from where I live in Delaware.
I have had some really bad counterfeit southern food in restaurants though and I hate that because I know how wonderful it can be.
I think the food you get in small restaurants down south is made special by the home cooks in those kitchens. It is very generational, southern cooking, time spent with good cooks.

I learned my lessons...

I don't order southern food anywhere other than down south. I grew up in South Carolina and miss the food but have learned the hard way not to expect anything even close anywhere else.

can your palette change in a year or did i just buy some crappy food?

I think women's cravings do change along with hormones.
When I was pregnant I couldn't stand the way cantaloupe smelled and had to run away if one was near. A pile of fresh cantaloupes in a produce department sent me racing outside for air. Today, twenty-plus years later, that one odor still makes me a little bit queazy.
I don't typically crave sweets and can have them around me without being tempted, then at a particular time of the month I get desperate for a candy bar.
Alcohol is more of a summertime indulgence for me for some reason.

Why is Chef Robert Irvine hosting Restaurant: Impossible?

His Hilton Head restaurant is very popular and is on my bucket list. http://www.eathhi.com/

Restaurants in Durham?

You're welcome. I really miss Foster's Market in Durham and Neomonde in Raleigh, both casual restaurants with great, fresh food.

Emporia, Va for dinner

You're welcome. Yes, that is a long drive to Florence.

Emporia, Va for dinner

I apologize. I just read the link I provided and realized the lunch may not still be at The Lady and Son's.
For another idea that is quintessential Old South think about exiting into Beaufort. It is beautiful with antebellum homes and moss-covered ancient oaks, great restaurants too. They have recently rebuilt their riverside area and it is lovely.

Emporia, Va for dinner

Raghound, I have seen a busy restaurant called Carolina Chicken and Barbecue there and the Yelp reviews are good. It is very conveniently located close to I-95. Everything else in that area is chain. I have developed the habit of stopping by Bojangles in Onley but would love to make a change. I hope you get some responses before your trip. I'm interested too.

Also, I saw your Southeast post that you are also staying close to the Hilton Head Airport. There are two restaurants near there that my family enjoyed often - Cancun and The Yummy House. Carey Hilliard's is very popular but we hated it.

My husband still travels there and enjoys Sam Snead's.

River Street in Savannah is not hard to get to from the airport area and I think would be worth the effort. There is an actual Paula Deen bus tour that includes lunch at her restaurant. It is a hassle otherwise to get a table at The Lady and Son's. Just hanging out around River Street and Historic Savannah is lots of fun though. It is a very walkable city.

Here is information about the Paula Deen tour in case you're interested: http://www.savannahtours.us/?event=offer.detail&offerId=8327

The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Philly Edition

Michael Symon chose the pasta tasting menu at Vetri, declaring it to be his favorite restaurant in the country.

“If I had to go to one place for pasta, I would go to Vetri in Philadelphia, my favorite restaurant in America. I’ve never had a pasta there that is anything less than the best pasta I ever ate. [...] Marc’s pasta is breathtakingly perfect.”

Restaurants in Durham?

We enjoyed Foster's Market early on Sunday mornings but there are so many other wonderful restaurants in Durham and Chapel Hill.

Dewey/Rehobeth Restaurants in mid-October

Casa DiLeo is a great place for pizza if you don't want Grotto. Louie's is also very good.
For seafood Big Fish Grill never disappoints and in Lewes there's Fish On. Fins has a very popular Happy Hour and Go Fish has the best fish and chips.
The Bake Shop on Second Street in Lewes is my favorite coffee house/baked goods spot. Cafe Azafran isn't a coffee house but I always love their coffee and breakfast offerings but everything they serve is wonderful.
For Italian, think about A Touch of Italy for sandwiches and fresh baked bread and desserts. Lupo Di Mare on Rehoboth Avenue is modern and lovely. Villa Sorrento and Gallucio's in Lewes are both very good.
Consider Dogfish Head for craft beer and burgers and a hat or t-shirt. Kindle in Lewes has half-priced burgers on Wednesdays but so many area restaurants are offering off-season specials so be sure to pick up a Cape Gazette when you get into town.
I really like the sandwiches at Arena's.
The Rehoboth Foodie offers up-to-date restaurant advice so be sure to look over his website.

Moving down to South Carolina. Suggestions?

You really should post this on several boards, definitely DC and Southeast.
You will love Southern food! I wonder where in South Carolina you are moving.
