meatless potluck ideas?

alkapal-Was looking through some old threads. Was just wondering if you ever tried that lasagne recipe & wondered how it turned out. =)

Too frugal for Sourdough?

Also, my starter is just made of bread flour, but when I divide it I sometimes make a rye loaf. Half rye. It doesn't go in the starter though. I got my recipe from How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Bittman...

Being fed is one thing, but I don't understand having to throw some of it out.

Crazy supermarket check-out experience

I agree. I hate using the self-checkout most of the time. If I have more than one or two things, it seems to take as long if not longer than having waited in line. And if you need to buy alcohol in the self-check it takes awhile usually.

I hate that thing talking at me, too. They never have a place to set your purse or basket. Even if you have a cart it feels to me like a juggling act trying to get my wallet out, shoppers card & money or debit card.

Just such a hassle to me all in all. I could see having some of these registers for peeps that have one item & are in a hurry, but I despise when all that is open is self check. I like to be waited on, talk to the cashier sometimes... My husband was spot on saying we are all going to be replaced by computers & robots. We have seen SO many more self checks installed recently. There are people that need those jobs.

Any ideas for packing own vegan food to take for holidays or travel in general?

I love the idea of grape leaves, but, yes, a little hard to find ingredients around here. Same goes for stuffed cabbage.

I have a couple of great stuffed cabbage recipes. I used to use a vegan ground "sausage" that has always been difficult to find & now that I know it is made with GMO soy, I have no idea what to use. I can't even find the GMO one here.

I love vegan mac & cheese, but, again, it's hard to find nutritional yeast unless I buy it online & I honestly can't afford it right now.

All good ideas! I really appreciate it. If nothing else I need to rethink some recipes just to have something more interesting in my weekly repertoire. And we aren't going to be traveling now, but it will ease my mind to have some ideas for the future.

I had thought of that, too. It does not appear that we will be going now, but I can always use help for future visits. I don't know how sensitive they are though. I'm always being offered fish or cheese...

That is an excellent idea. I have only had chard once, but it was pretty good. I will have to look for some.

There is an Aldi in a nearby town. That is a good idea. I have only been to an Aldi once in my life that was pretty ghetto, but I have heard they have changed.

Maybe I can try those sometime then if they don't have the chili lime pistachios anymore.

Aw man! That is a major bummer! I will have to drop them a line. Those pistachios were SO good! Thank GOD the chickpeas are still there! I have yet to replicate it exactly.

Too frugal for Sourdough?

I have only been making sourdough for maybe three years now so maybe I am just ignorant on this, but I have never heard of having to throw out half of the starter. I keep mine in the fridge, dump it all into a mixing bowl with flour & warm water. In about 6 hours I divide it again-1 half goes back in the fridge & the other half goes to making a loaf.

I have never had any problems & don't "feed" mine. I make bread at least once a week, but I have gone even up to a month without messing with it & it was fine when I got the starter back out. The only problem I encountered was moving & discovering there was no refrigerator in our new place so my poor original starter got thrown out. It sat out too long & I wasn't sure about using it. It was pretty easy to make new one though.

Thank you! I have been making a lot of bean soups lately & making my own bread. It certainly might be an option to pack. The salads are good ideas, too. Maybe add chick peas to the raw kale salad? I do have a hard time finding kale where we live, but I will keep that in mind.

Thank you for those ideas! The meatballs sound especially good to me! I don't think I'll try the tempeh for this particular trip, but I would love to try my hand at making it. Thanks for the video! I tried making seitan once so far & it was a complete disaster & inedible. Would be great to master both!

They aren't resistant or anything. If they acted like that I honestly wouldn't go at all. I don't want to commit any etiquette faux pas, but I mostly need ideas on what travels well. Money has been tight & I live in a rural area so many more exotic ingredients are out. I'd like to take something relatively nice to share in case there is a sit-down dinner, but need sustenance for the rest of the trip, too. I usually end up doing Clif Bars, peanut butter sandwiches and have packed a pasta salad I made before. It just doesn't seem substantial enough & I always feel hungry & weak. I was just sort of looking to see if anyone else had any different things they might pack when in the same situation. I think if I have a plan it will ease some of the anxiety I already feel during holidays. Thank you for your input! =)

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - December 2013 [old]

We don't currently live near a Trader Joe's, but I used to always get the Chili Lime Pistachios that were SO good! They had another flavor, too that I can't remember at the moment. Habanero?? Last couple times I was in one I couldn't find these though. My dad used to bring me several bags when he would visit.

My husband & I buy a really good red German wine there, too. Been awhile so I forget the name. Was very reasonably priced as well.

I like the TJ brand soy sauce too that is made in Japan. I could sure spend some money in there! I heard some things awhile back about them selling GMOs & not disclosing it. Not sure of the details. I still like them better than Whole Foods.

And almost forgot! They always had this awesome cold chick pea salad that was to die for! I could eat that all day, every day!

Popular flavors that you don't care for

LOL I guess I am one of those weirdos that likes the Brazil nuts. I think I saw an episode of the Big Bang Theory where Sheldon was commending Amy for being willing to eat all of the brazil nuts so he doesn't have to look at them. =)

I will have to try that sometime. I have a ton of it lying around. I rinse the ends of my hair with it sometimes.

That is so weird because my friend who just turned 80 was telling me yesterday that her husband would sneeze when he would overindulge. His drink of choice was beer though. Huh, I thought I just had allergies or a cold. (LOL just kidding on that part.)

Subway sure does have a distinctive smell. I never thought about it until now... I have felt sick smelling yeast out of a bakery before, but just the one. I thought I was the only one...

I did not yet know I didn't like amaretto until I had a sip of a friend's drink. Reading above I thought perhaps it was the sour mix, but when I was a bartender I didn't like the smell of amaretto either. Used to sling a lot of those.

I think I know the weird butter taste you refer to. I had some olives I never tried before that taste that way to me. First olive I ever didn't like!

Cheese Wafies! Those were so good! Can't remember if they were Wise or not, but I saw some at Shop n Save in Saint Louis I believe. They just might still be out there! =)

Thank you for all of the suggestions! We will have to drive about two hours away. Their house is pretty secluded though & we are usually there from morning until late at night if we don't end up staying the night so in any case it'll be more than one meal time.
