Need Houston help
I don't get Hugos. I went once, that's all it took. My husband's mole sauce was totally burned, my fish was completely cold and raw inside, the place was busy and we couldn't get service (and we had a kid, which I mean, in all fairness, please pay attention and get us our stuff as fast as you can given that we are fighting public temper tantrums at every moment), and when we did the waiter spilled beer all over our table (okay, it was honestly the second beer for one of our guests, and the waiter opened it and tried to pour it into a glass and spilled it all over the table, us, our child, and our food). The manager discounted our meal but... what really makes a good spot? Free food, or good food and good service? Hugo's is out for me, until I hear some good reviews.

Not a vegetarian but I very rarely eat meat, and my husband is a vegetarian. We've tried and liked Ruggles Green (I know a lot of people dog ruggles on here but seriously the veggie pannini at Ruggles Green-- yum.) There's a good eggplant sandwich at Empire Cafe. There's a good veggie sandwitch at the coffee shop cattycorner to that, also good tiramisu there. There's an all vegetarian indian restaurant at Kirby in the Miako's complex called Madras Pavillian. That place is buffet at lunch and dinner at dinner, and I've never been disappointed except once at buffet they gave us lukewarm water instead of asking what we wanted to drink, the food was very spicy and the a/c happened to be broken... but damn the food was good. Dinner service went off better, my husband and I both loved our curries and the crepes are delish too. Also the list above has great picks. Oh, I almost forgot I often like to stop into Aladdin in Montrose and fill up on veggies, salad, and their baba gannoush and hummus... also good. But when I go there, I always get the lamb kebob just for a treat too. :-)

You know I never thought about googling it... thanks Scargod! Good way to help me sound less stupid! :-) All the sides to you! All the sides!
Inspiration requested for appetizers--Italian Dinner for the Boss
That's exactly what I was going to say.
you can do the traditional antipasti tray and stash in the fridge till folks come over.
you can do the cute little endive leaves (or whatever kindof boat or roll you want to make) with a sweet little bruschetta mix inside, and that gets rid of the bread.
Get some cheese, get some fruit and put it on your wood chopping block.
I also have a dictator at home (4 years old, so he can actually talk to order me about), so I always turn to pasta with raw sauce... you could do your favorite cold pasta salad just use bowties or penne to keep things manageable and less dinner-y.
You could do a fennell and citrus salad, it's fruity, it's yummy, easy to eat.
You could get your husband to saw away at some frozen beef for a while and do carpaccio (yeah you can make it at home and keep your husband out of your hair...)... you could make a nice artichoke appetizer and serve with butter, pesto, whatever you like. Just cook them ahead and serve them room temp or a little warm from your WFO. Alright I gotta stop now! I'm hungry!
also your other ideas sound fine... a lot of people are suprised at how nice a simple and healty snack is like your hummus and fresh veggies. I like olive oil dip with veggies, too. You can make it work, don't worry! It'll be fab!
Best Barbecue Only You Know About...
Cranky Franks in Fredericksburg is the best BBQ I've had so far... so good we had to try back for a couple of days cause they kept running out. Best part is you get ALL the sides, not just two. Just hop into Fredericksburg and ask where it is. It's by that old drive in theatre, I forget the name of that road tho. They have another location that I've never been to, think it's in Fredericksburg too.
Favorite Italian Restaurants in Houston
Did any of y'all eat at Pasquale's on Montrose before it became the brazilian steak house? I wonder where Pasquale is now... his food was great, the place was never packed at weekday lunch, and the guys all became like second family. That's my fave, I'm so sad it closed....
And what about Michelangelo's? Love Dolce Vita, too packed though... Damians is good but once I got dirty white clam sauce.... hey thanks for the tips on more places to try!
Any suggestions for very special 60th ANIV? (HOU)
I've lived here my whole life and can't find a place with a nice dinner and room to dance. My suggestion for a special dinner plus music (piano, no dancing) would be Bistro Vino, but I see they've gotten a mix of good and bad reviews, so you might love it or hate it....I would try it if you're going on an off night but not a busy night just to be safe. Also Michaelangelo's has a piano some nights, you should call and check. I love love love their menu and the prices are actually pretty good, the waiters are always attentive, and it's a nice setting. Also think La Colombe D'Or, which is a hotel as well. When I went there was no music, but it was the nicest restaurant and the best food I've had so far. You can call and see if they have music on sat/sunday. I generally go on an off night so I can actually hear my friends over dinner (everywhere is loud on Friday and Saturday) Another Houston favorite is Tony's, also Damians. I know the Italian places better than the creole ones. At any rate, I can tell you this: if your parents-in-law want to have a special meal and dance, you're probably going to have to make two stops. You should check out the Omni hotel, they have a spot downstairs called the Black Swan where you can go dancing. I don't think it's a restaurant as well, but I know they have "nights" -- jazz night, swing night. I will keep an eye on this blog because I love to eat and to dance, so if anyone out there has a spot to have both a nice meal and a dance, I am soooo going. Post where you go and how it turned out so I can try too!
