Local spices & sauces

Thanks Sue-we will definitely find a farmer's market or two and search there. We have bought spices from the farmer's market in Charleston, and some delicious hot sauce too!

Local spices & sauces

We leave Thursday 5/17 for our trip to Savannah & Hilton Head (hooray!!). We always bring back local spices and hot sauces (I mean HOT, not Texas Pete or Crystal. No offense meant!). Does anyone know of local grocery stores that would have a nice selection of spices and/or hot sauces? Thanks again!!

GOOD breakfast and dinner food in Nags Head?

If you are renting a house & plan on cooking a few meals there, buy your seafood from Carawan's Seafood Company. It's in Kitty Hawk on N Croatan Hwy, about 10-15 minute drive north of Nags Head. The seafood is fresh & the prices can't be beat. We always buy our seafood from there & have never been disappointed!! Have a great time!

Flying into Jacksonville-driving up to Savannah

WOW-I want to stop at ALL of these places, Littleman!! I might not make it to Savannah!! Thanks for the directions too!!!!

Flying into Jacksonville-driving up to Savannah

This place is #1 on my list. Thanks 1POINT and beteez!!!

Flying into Jacksonville-driving up to Savannah

Because the flight is MUCH cheaper, we are flying into Jacksonville & driving a rental up the coast to Savannah in 2 weeks. Does anyone know of any spots to stop for lunch on the way? We'll take BBQ, seafood or whatever the locals are having that day! Thanks!

KILL DEVIL HILLS

My family vacations in the OBX every summer-we love it! If you like seafood, you have to visit Awful Arthur's in KDH. Their crab balls are delicious & their KDH cocktail is on the money. It is an oyster shooter (the oyster is shucked right at the bar), with beer & a nicely spiced cocktail sauce added to it. We usually stock the kitchen at our rental house so we don't eat out too much-but we make it our business to go to Awful Arthur's at least twice during the week for lunch.

Visiting Savannah for the FIRST time!!

Thanks LaLa. I am the same way-I can be served by a waiter with white gloves, or by a waitress popping gum. As long as the service is good & the food is delicious-I could give a darn. I was anxious to try the Chart House for their Blood Mary, but that's about it. A co-worker told me to try the Soulfood Restaurant on W 42nd St in Savannah. Do you know anything about it? I think that is the name of it...

Visiting Savannah for the FIRST time!!

Is the service or food bad? Or is it not worth the price they charge? When we visit other places, we like to eat where the locals eat. We don't raise an eyebrow because they serve the food on paper plates, but we do draw the line when it comes to bad service or tasteless food. Can you give me a few places that the locals frequent in Savannah? Thanks!

Visiting Savannah for the FIRST time!!

We'll be staying in Hilton Head with relatives for 2 days & then in Savannah for 4 days. Have you heard of Tubby's Tank House or the Shrimp Factory in Savannah?

Visiting Savannah for the FIRST time!!

Thanks lenorel57! Sorry about your annoying server! I have Elizabeth's on my list, and also Huey's & the Crystal Beer Parlor. I think we are going to venture out to Tybee Island & stop at Sundae Cafe while we are there. I read on other posts that these places have pretty good food! We will definitely have to do the trolley!

Visiting Savannah for the FIRST time!!

Thanks! I'll check them out & come back with any questions.

Visiting Savannah for the FIRST time!!

Hubby & I are finally getting the chance to visit Savannah & we can't wait to get there! We will be staying May 17-22 (Thurs-Tues) & I would like your input as to where the best seafood places are, where the locals eat, where the best soul food can be found, and what establishments we absolutely cannot miss. Thank you ahead of time!

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

Where is Pascal's?

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

Thanks for the tip about Pascal's. Where is it located?

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

My H & I went to NOLA back in October-loved everything about it!! I have added Muriel's to my list!

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

That's a good idea. I have heard postive things about their menu & staff.

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

I know. It should be illegal how good the BBQ shrimp are!

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

That's actually on my list of "must try's", so thank you for reminding me!!

Taking Mom to NOLA for her first visit!!

My H & I are taking my mom to NOLA for her first visit ever & we are so excited! My mom is an active, fit 67 year old who passes for my sister at times! She loves to have fun & is a foodie like us. My question is this: do I take her to places I have tried & love, or do we venture out & go to places that I want to try? I have been to: Felix's (chargrilled oysters), Acme (when I visited NOLA for the first time 9 years ago), Gumbo Shop (bloody mary), Coops (gumbo), Fiorella's (fried chicken & pickles), Cooter Brown's (cheese fries), Camilla Grille (breakfast), Deanie's (soft shelled crabs), Mr. B's (BBq shrimp), and Mother's (Po Boy). We do want to take her somewhere wonderful for dinner one night so I need suggestions. Mom loves seafood & I want her first trip to NOLA to be filled with good seafood. We will arrive Friday 1/27 afternoon & depart on 1/30, so we don't have alot of time. Thanks!!

Which Camillia Grill is better?

I also had the pecan waffle & it was awesome! I had the fried catfish for lunch one day & that was tasty too. Hoping that the original Grill's food is just as good when we visit!

Which Camillia Grill is better?

Thanks for the advice! We will be in NOLA in October & will be bringing 4 friends who have never been, so we want to make the most of our long weekend & show off NOLA to them one meal at a time!

Which Camillia Grill is better?

We had the pleasure of dining at Camillia Grill in the FQ a few months back & were just wondering if we should venture down to the original one in the Garden District.

Visiting NOLA October 2011

Thank you! Never even thought of doing a combo tour. We will defintely look into that!

Visiting NOLA October 2011

Thanks! I can't wait to get back down to my favorite place on earth!! We actually had some pretty tasty oysters at Cooter Brown's back in February. I also tried them roasted for the first time ever while we were at Felix's and I had to stop moaning before they threw me out! They were THE BEST tasting ANYTHING I have ever had!!

Visiting Charleston SC Labor Day Weekend

Thanks so much! I will definitely check them out!

Visiting Charleston SC Labor Day Weekend

This will only be my 3rd time visiting this charming city. I will be in town September 2-7 for a wedding on Johns Island. While we will be busy with family & friends that Friday & Saturday, we basically have Sunday-Monday & Tuesday to venture out on our own-hooray! We want authentic Low Country food served at places the locals go. We also want 1 or 2 "nice" restaurants for dinner. One last thing: please point us in the right direction for hard crabs & delicious oysters! Thanks!

Visiting NOLA October 2011

We will be visiting NOLA again this October (we visit every October for a long weekend!), and want to know if softshell crabs will still be in season there, as well as where can we find the freshest oysters on the half shell (the last time Felix's beat out Acme). Also, this isn't a foodie question: we were in NOLA this past February & did the touristy swamp tour-didn't see a darn thing! Would it pay to try it again in October, or should we spend our swamp money on food & libations? Thanks!

NJ girls visiting NOLA Columbus Day Weekend 09

We decided on Oak Alley. I am actually looking forward to the tour! I usually like to do my own pub crawl, but we might do the Southern Comfort tour this time around. 2 days to go!! Can't wait till Friday!! Thanks for the tips, everyone! I will report back on our adventures!
