Beefy Macaroni Casserole

Great comfort food dish, and yes, it makes a ton. I only had a 28 oz can of tomatoes so I used all of it and left out the cup of stock because of the extra liquid from the tomatoes. I did add a teaspoon of Better Than Beef paste (just without the water) and will probably try chicken next time, because there will be a next time. It was not at all dry—perfect and creamy. It made two casseroles and I stuck one in the freezer without the cheese topping, but it didn't stay in there long. I'm cooking that one tonight.

Shaved Asparagus Salad

Made this tonight, but with rice wine vinegar because I didn't have champagne vinegar. Everyone loved it.I used an excellent Parmesan Reggiano from a local cheese shop which really made a difference. I wasn't sure there would be enough dressing, but there was plenty. Quick and easy, too.

Beer-Braised Bratwursts with Onion

This recipe got rave reviews all around when I made it for a Father's Day dinner. I debated making it the "right" way, by cooking it in the beer first and then browning, but I decided to do it this way because this is how I braise all meats. I figure I'm an Irish New Englander so I have a license to do it "wrong." Plus, cooking the onions in the butter that now had sausage juice in it seemed like a good thing to do. And it was.

Pie dough in the food processor

That's what I do, too, except I use mostly butter, processing that for a few pulses before adding a little shortening (ice cold, too) and pulsing for a few more bursts. The crust is always perfect. I almost wonder if it's foolproof because my oven heating element caught on fire and broke when my pie was in there for two minutes—just long enough to start the butter melting. I had to race to the nearest available oven (on Thanksgiving!!) and entered the wrong temp, nearly burning it. My SIL lowered the temp and covered the whole thing in foil for the last 25 minutes and the pie still came out perfect! I pretty much use Brown-Eyed Baker's apple pie crust, maybe verbatim, although I have a habit of tweaking.

"Duck Fat Fries"

Hmmm... maybe if I was faced with a 45 minute wait while craving Duckfat fries and a milkshake I would change my tune REALLY quickly.

"Duck Fat Fries"

Those fries at Duck Fat ARE something special! (Of course, you have to drink one of their milkshakes with them, too.) I've never waited for a table there, but I have seen people waiting. Wouldn't go that far for french fries.

Talenti Gelato -- crazy good supermarket gelato

I tried the raspberry and thought it was horrible—completely devoid of raspberry flavor. It actually had a weird chemical taste that stayed with me the whole day. I was not inspired to try any of their other flavors.

Buddha's Delight (Jai)

You don't need to try every recipe Chow publishes. They're not all written with one person in mind. This is a great recipe for someone who is adventurous or who is looking to make a traditional dish for the Chinese New Year. It's at least interesting to read if you're not going to make it!

Moist Carrot Cake Recipe

Incredibly good--especially considering how quick it is to make. I ended up having to make cupcakes instead (didn't have the right pans) and I can't stop eating them. My new standard recipe, thanks!
