world famous Barbecue Meatloaf

Ah Smoke Daddy...

I am no 'fried chicken expert,' but I had a piece of his fried chicken last week and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. AMAZING.

Good bakeries in the burbs?

I seriously cannot say enough about Roma's cannolli cake. It is pure heaven.

Trying to recall cookies from the past

Magic Middles - popular around 1989

God they were good...

I have recently found a similar version -- a new Peppdridge Farm milano called "Milano Melts":

Not quite the same, but they are filling a void for now. :)

I am loving Olce in Cedars !

PS love that you call it a 'pie' -- friends around here make fun of me for calling it that all the time!

I am loving Olce in Cedars !

Let me try to answer some of these questions.........

Best North Jersey pizza -- I stand behind "Vinny's Pizzarama" in Wayne, NJ. Second to none -- oh, and they serve "RC Cola" from the fountain with ice chips not cubes. To be honest with you, I'm not sure if it is the dough, the cheese or the sauce that makes it so good... but man I miss it! Crispy thin crust with an appropriate amount of cheese is what does it, I think.

Around Lansdale, I've found Fiore's Brick Oven Pizza in the now closed Superfresh strip mall to be my preferred Friday night pizza of choice.

I would like to give Olce another shot -- but next time dine in.

I am loving Olce in Cedars !

Based on the recommendations, I tried Olce this past Friday night. I'm beginning to think that I'm a bit of a 'pizza snob' as I was spoiled by the pizzas of North Jersey growing up...

I did take-out and got the Margherita, the Roma (prosciutto/artichoke) and a side caesar salad. The margherita was 'fine' but the Roma was borderline inedible -- the prosciutto was SO SALTY and overpowering.

While I had really high hopes for this place and found the staff to be lovely, I don't know that I will be rushing back any time soon. Who knows, maybe I just ordered the wrong thing...

Girls' Weekend - Old City Dining Recs

Thanks to all for your suggestions. We ate at Zahav and really enjoyed it. We weren't able to finish all of the food -- we got the $36 tasting menu. The quality of the food and its preparation were excellent.

For bfast, we wound up going to Reading Terminal. Worked out great.

We also got some bar food at Plough & the Stars -- all fried, tasted fine at the time but we all felt like hell afterwards.

Thank you again for all of the ideas -- much appreciated.

Thinking $20/$25 an entree?

Girls' Weekend - Old City Dining Recs

Hello, three girlfriends and I will be staying at the Hyatt at Penn's Landing next month and are in search of dining recommendations for dinner and brunch. Thinking it might be best to dine in/around old city due to the location of our hotel.

We are open to BYO and not limited to any particular cuisine. Nothing too expensive, please. :)

Philly Phoodies - 1st time in TX

Hi all,

Just wanted to report back on our trip. We did not have a car but did have some access to the hotel shuttle, which helped. Due to transportation issues, we were not able to make it to Red's Porch.

Casual Dinner - Paradise Cafe on 6th: It was fine -- we had a very large group (20+ ppl) and they were quite accommodating. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, broccoli for $8.50. "Mystery Beer" for $2. Prices were right for casual bar food.

BBQ Lunch - Iron Works BBQ: Btw the 4 of us, we got brisket, pork ribs and sausage. Brisket was tender but lacked flavor. Ribs: I prefer fall off the bone style and was a bit disappointed in the tenderness/flavor. Sausage was great -- unlike any sausage I'd ever had before.

Dinner - Botticelli's: We were again here with a large group. Excellent outdoor bartender. Margaritas were delish and he made an excellent Manhattan. Folks in our group raved about the butternut squash raviolis. We had the salmon and were disappointed with the sides/lackthereof.

Breakfast - Perla's: our bartender from Botticelli's recommended this place for bfast and good bloody mary's. It was amazing. My husband used the phrase "explosive flavors" to describe his eggs benedict/crab. I had the lobster omlette which was delish. We ordered a basket of their fresh pastries and they were amazing (fresh donuts!). The bloody mary was so good (pickled green bean, 3 olives and lime garnish) that I ordered 2. Several at our table ordered the baked grapefruit. I'd never seen that on a menu before and love the idea. They raved about it. The atmosphere was super cool and the staff was very attentive. Another plus: excellent, strong coffee. Quite simply, we loved this place.

We met up with friends at Polvos one night for drinks and they thoroughly enjoyed their meal there (killer guacamole).

All in all, we were quite happy with our dining experiences. If we had a car, I think we would have made the drive to Snow's for BBQ as well as Red's Porch.

Thank you, Austin foodies, for your helpful recommendations. We'll be happy to help any of you out should you visit Philly any time soon.

Philly Phoodies - 1st time in TX

I just checked the weather and believe it or not, Philadelphia is just as hot these days. Yikes!

Thanks for the well written, helpful advice. We look forward to trying out your suggestions and reporting back.

Philly Phoodies - 1st time in TX

Hello all,

We will be in Austin (Crowne Plaza) from Th-Sun this weekend for a wedding. This will be our 1st time in Austin and TX for that matter. We will not have a car (not sure how that will factor in to your recommendations...).

We enjoy good, quality, fresh food and don't care about the "fancy" factor. Love a good bloody mary, bbq, and fish (not necessarily all at the same place).

Please share your picks for any of the following categories:
- BFast
- Drinks
- BBQ
- Tex/Mex
- Casual
- Lunch
- Nice Dinner

Thanks in advance!

Dinner near Loews Hotel Saturday night?

Thanks for the suggestions. Kanella sounds great -- will definitely put it on the list to try in the future. We actually wound up at Monks. The hour wait was well worth the amazing mussels and burgers that night.

We have been to Lolita and did enjoy it a year ago. Just wasn't really what we were up for this past weekend.

Dinner near Loews Hotel Saturday night?

Looking for a dinner rec. close to the Lowes Hotel for tomorrow night.

There will be 4 of us -- an early bday dinner for hubby. We are going out kareoke-ing from 9-12 and want a relaxed early dinner. Doesn't need to be fancy, just good food.

Considering Monks or Oyster House... but haven't been impressed with what we've read about OH.

Thoughts/ideas???

Lansdale Lunch Rec?

My mom and I are going for massages in Lansdale this Saturday and I wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations.

I had been considering Cravings Cafe but recent reviews have been pretty poor, so I am reconsidering.

Thanks!

Need bagel place in or near Ambler

Service at Bagelworks in Lansdale is PAAAAIINNNfully SLOW.

Some advice: I have "placed an order" the day before for several dozen bagels; picked them up as soon as they opened (6:30am?) and they had them all sliced and ready to go. Bagels are delish!

Recession dining in the burbs?

For BYOB Italian, you can't go wrong with Boccelli's at the Gwynedd train station. DH enjoys Cafe Lombardi in Horsham. I will second Nadia's Thai in Lansdale but FAR PREFER their Media location (always a good crowd -- which I can't really say about the Lansdale location).
