Sabor Cocina Mexicana - Thousand Oaks
We thought the food was excellent - definitely a cut above the usual Mexican fare. It was most akin to the Mexico City type restaurants, as opposed to Tex-Mex. The margaritas are the size of your head, and because we had heard they could be watery, we ordered an extra shot of tequila on the side. Truthfully, we hadn't looked at the menu, so we were surprised to find that the drink, with the extra, was $18.00! ($12.00 alone). We decided that we will just ask them to have the bartender to be certain he has added a goodly dose of tequila to the already pricey drink. Other than that, we loved the entire experience. The decor is amazing, and the bar is really a nice place to meet for drinks and chips - not just an "add-on" room.

We're looking for a "special" restaurant in the Camarillo area, to take visitors, who will be living there in the near future. Any suggestions?
Burritos/Tacos in Westlake/Thousand Oaks
Los Dos Hermanos on Thousand Oaks Blvd., near Erbes. The BEST "street tacos" we've had in the U.S. (and we lived for a few years in Mexico). Also a fantastic tostada with huge beautifully cooked shrimp. Good margaritas, that pack a whallop. No atmosphere to speak of, but the food is out of this world.

They were the BEST! Every once in a while, there will pop up one of their segments - still wonderful.

Possibly the WORST Mexican food I've ever had. Yes, it's very reasonable, but most Mexican restaurants are. Watery refried beans, overcooked meat, nothing at all traditional about the menu selections. Service is friendly, but that's about it. AND the only drinks available are beer and soft drinks - no margaritas, which to us, is one of the fun additions to a Mexican meal. We much prefer Agave Azul.

Tucson - Mexican restaurant?
Thank you SO much! Yes, it was El Charro - just not good at all. I will send the kids your restaurant list and tell them to check them all out, so that the next time we visit them, they'll be able to take us to a really good place!
Tucson - Mexican restaurant?
Our kids have just moved to Tucson, and they're still trying to find a GREAT Mexican restaurant. One that was recommended (can't remember the name) was notable for its carne seca, and it was probably one of the worst meals any of us has eaten. Meat was way too salty, and the other dinner choices were mediocre, at best. We lived in Mexico for a few years, so we're not unfamiliar with the cooking. The sort of Tex-Mex fare in Tucson is a favorite of ours. I hope to learn of some places recommended by Chowhound readers. Thank you!
Viana La Place
I have a cookbook - "Pasta Fresca" by Evan Kleinman & Viana La Place & one entitled "Panini," also by Viana La Place (written in 1994). I wonder whether anyone knows if she has written anything recently. Her recipes are wonderful.

I agree! Can't believe Leila's is still in business, despite their outstanding food. It's just in such a weird place - you really have to know the little shopping center. I found out about it, as it's close to my hair salon.

And Zagat would be correct, at least in my humble opinion. Very good food - imaginative, nicely presented; good service; friendly staff (but not overly so). We also like Farfalla, in the Westlake Promenade. Westlake is so small, that it's difficult to find anything new. Grill on the Alley is ok - pricey steaks. Ditto, Mastro's. Do you remember the Pacific Dining Car near downtown L.A.?
