Found Umami Paste No. 5 in Saskatoon!

After reading your post , I decided to look for it here in Calgary and found it at Market17. Even the person at the till was curious about it. Googled it and now can not wait to use it ! Thanks for the post.

Chuck Hughes - Next Iron Chef? [moved from Quebec board]

I agree cherrytomato ! His love of food and his helpful nature makes him stand out . I would love to see more of him. Make sure you put in your votes as mentioned above because he is neck to neck with Chef Burrell for first place.

Pumpkins for Roasting? (Calgaryj)

My Co-op on Richmond road has what are called "cooking pumpkins'. I think they would work well for your recipe. But be warned that there was not many left when I last looked.

Layered graham cracker square recipe needed.

Well danna, I think I will try your recipe you posted, as my mother found the one I was looking for and it started off with "half a cup of crisco lard" !!! The name of the cake is Bachelors Cake. Thanks for the help !

Layered graham cracker square recipe needed.

Thanks anyway but this bar is layered like a cake would be with crackers, chocolate then cracker again ,usually about 6 layers. I came up the same recipe you sent when I did a search. Thanks again for trying.

Layered graham cracker square recipe needed.

I grew up in Western Canada and I remember these squares at every wedding, dance, and funeral that I ever went to. They were whole grahams layered with this creamy chocolate and they were sooo good. I have never seen them in a bakery or anywhere in the city. If you can help me out I would appreciate it. Thanks all !

Top Chef Canada (Spoilers for all Episodes)

TC in the states has there own uninspiring episodes. Remember Elmo and Cookie (MUPPETS), judging the food.! I would rather see Michael Smith, and hey we are Canadians, we are always a bit quirky and ordinary. I love the show !

Top Chef Canada (Spoilers for all Episodes)

I am rooting for Connie, and am upset that for the last two shows, they have not shown what she made for quickfire. I get it that she isn't in the top 4 or the bottom 4 but I would still like to see what she made! Didn't the U.S. version show everyones dish?

CHARCUT Roast House Calgary

I finally went after reading the raves about it for a long time, way before Top Chef. Everything was fantastic! We went for lunch and for two full meals plus 2 glasses of house wine , it was only $65. Well worth it. P.S. Rooting for Connie to take it all!

Are you seeing grocery stores moving away from self check-outs?

Not a grocery store but our Walmart had 4 self checkouts for around a year, then got rid of them. The reason given was that "we were robbed blind"

What 's the wierdest recipe you have found and would you attempt it?

After accidentally eating half an ant that had crawled on to my p.b. sandwich. I can confirm that they do taste very tart. just like a lemon !

Best Instant Ramen? (please do not mock me, pretty please)

agree that Mama brand noodles are one of the best. I have them as a simple soup or stirfry with pork, garlic, cabbage, and celery, . yum.

Top Chef Canada

Top Chef Canada is set to air in April and I have heard that there are two chefs from Calgary. One is the chef and owner of Charcut but who is the other Calgary chef?

A chowhound married to a picky eater . . . divorce? ;-)

There are certain things that are rooted in childhood, and can't be torn out. My x father-in-law grew up in Ireland and considered corn to be pig food !! To my surprise one Thanksgiving Day ! He lived in Canada over 40 years but would still not touch corn.

If you could wear your food as perfume...

Fresh baked home-made cinnamon buns! The best smell in the world !

A new recipe project!

Agree. I have had a recipe for an East Indian lamb chops with tumeric cream sauce saved in my favorites bar for over 6 months and finally made it. It was good but I prob. would not make it again. Now I am glad that I cleared it out and now can move on to the next recipe saved.

Fenugreek leaves in S.W.

Hclass. It turned out fantastic. Will make it again and it really was easy.I ended up with extra sauce that I am sure would go well with chicken tomorrow .

Fenugreek leaves in S.W.

Thanks for the tips ! I went to Superstore today and found it. Almost missed it as it was in the International aisle and the box said Kasoori Methi. I would have missed it but for the fact that I am curious about anything food, turned the box around and it said fenugreek. I will let you know how it turned out.

Fenugreek leaves in S.W.

Thanks cancowboy ! I had looked up silkroad but thought they were in the far part of the city. Inglewood is not too far.

Fenugreek leaves in S.W.

I am going to try to make Vij's popular Lamb Popsicles from his world-famous resto in Vancouver. The only ingredient left that I need is fenugreek leaves. I live in the S.W. Thanks!

looking for turkey giblets

Co-op has packs of gizzard and heart mixed, haven't seen necks but I am sure any chicken part with a bone would work . I also think that more parts equals more flavour. Use at least 5 of each, hearts and gizzards.

Diners,Drive-ins, and Dives Calgary.

That sounds so good! And a real DDD destination.

looking for Szechuan peppercorns yyc

I found them in Chinatown a few months ago in a tiny shop . I think it was east off of Center St. on 2nd. Very good price too. Sorry I don't know the name of the shop but when I go to Chinatown I have to go to all of the shops, love exploring!!

Small Corn Tortillas in YYC

Calgary Co-op, at least the Richmond road one. They are in the deli section. I hope they are good as I have not tried them.

$30 pine nuts

I work at a grocery store and pine nuts from the bulk bin are always in our " decided they didn't want them " basket. I would do the same when I saw the prices but do you know that anything coming from the bulk bin and rejected at the cashier has to be thrown away, such waste. Lets all be smart shoppers and help limit waste.

Are you into iced coffee or iced tea, or both?

Iced coffee! Double, double with lots of ice. Although I do not mind iced Capps a real iced coffee is just regular coffee. So refreshing in the summer ! What I hate is when you ask for iced coffee and they give you a coffee slurpee. Yuck.

Side dishs to a smoked turkey?

I have bought a smoked turkey for the first time and am having it with friends on Sunday. But I am undecided on the sides. I know I want to do a stuffing with wild mushrooms and a bit of truffle oil. And maybe yams but am stumped on the rest. Any suggestion??

Best cocktail meatballs?

Yes! One jar grape jelly, one jar or less of sweet chili sauce, and a spoon or so of instant coffee. Season with a bit of s and p and garlic powder. Very good and so easy. I have not tried it in a crock pot but I'm sure it would work.

Problems with storing fresh basil

I bought a living Basil plant over a month ago, the kind that comes with the roots and on the advise of an old Italian gentleman put in a vase with water almost covering the roots. It stayed on my window sill for at least 3 weeks before it started to droop and I picked off leaves almost every day for use. I did learn that you have to make sure the water is below the stalk by a bit or it will start rotting the stem.

Green Chili-new location on Bow Trail SW

I am going to take your advise John and try something new next time. Are the chicken dishes you recommended very hot? I like a bit of heat but not too much.
