Visiting from NYC - where should we eat?

Hi!

My boyfriend and I will be in SF for 4 days and looking for restaurant recommendations. We're staying in the Embarcadero area (also we won't have a car).

We're looking for fun, casual, moderately priced eateries (entrees up to $20, or preferably cheaper), with a good local vibe & beer/wine selection. Any cuisine will do.

Also, we're up for exploring "off the beaten path" and hole-in-the wall places too.

Thanks in advance!

restaurants w/ sleek modern minimal decor? 2011 edition

Hi!

I origianally posted this question 4 years ago, but it's my mom's birthday once again, and I need to find a new aestheically pleasing restaurant:

It's my mom's birthday next week & I want to take her out for a birthday dinner. I would love some suggestions. She's a big fan of restaurants that have a sleek modern design (minimal and/or industrial a plus!). I want to say "style over substance" but it would help if the food was good too! Any cuisine will do except Indian,Thai or Japanese. She's a hip lady, but it doesn't have to be too "sceney" either. I'm also willing to splurge a bit.

FYI She's already been to the Modern at MoMa, Perry St, Public, The Wright, Morimoto, Delicatessen

Thanks for your help!

Looking for great SPANISH TAPAS with great ambiance

Ooh. I vote for Alta. But Boquiera or Sala 19 are good too.

I had a really delicious (and romantic) dinner at Euzkadi in east village. Not quite Spanish, but Basque. http://www.euzkadirestaurant.com/

Taking Parents to Dinner 60s and 3rd Ave Area

Definitely take them to Fig & Olive on 62nd & Lexington. I took my dad there for Father's Day & he loved it. Lots of mediterranean inspired foods & flavors and a rustic yet modern decor. They also have a wide array of olive / olive oils which is pretty cool.

Braised goat at Hearth?

My friend got the Cucina Povera menu on Saturday night. I took a taste of the braised goat and it was very tender and delicous. I didn't see any bones at all. Also, the dessert was yummy, and i dont even like pudding. I'd recommed for the value.

Merkato 55 Brunch Experience

OMG. I had the misfortune of going to Merkato 55 for a brunch date. Maybe it just wasn't my scene, but i wanted to kill myself for the duration of my eggs benedict....although, my date was enjoying it (red flag!). House music, dancing on tables. Euro "fashionistas" & the i-bankers who love them (or vice versa). It seemed lame to me. However, if you're looking for a daytime party vibe (and you like that type of crowd), this will fit the bill. We went at 3pm and it was full effect. I still would like to try out Merkato 55 for dinner though.

Quiet diner / brunch place for 6+ on Sundays

I highly recommend Pipa. It has a great brunch. It's spacious, warm restaurant with lots of chandeliers & big communal tables. It's on 19th St near 5th ave. I think the most expensive brunch item is $13.

25+ for dinner on UES?

At that size would it be better to find a restaurant with a private dining space? I did a search on NY Mag for UES + private dining area...maybe that could give some more options. How about Lumi or Brasserie Julien?

UES: Sat. Lunch "near" The Whitney?

How about Orsay on 75th and Lex. Very close to the Whitney & has a warm brasserie feel.

apiary in EV

I went there in early January on a Saturday night (with my mom). It was definitely crowded, and "festive"...not too loud, but not quiet either. Food was good. I had the sea scallops appetizer and hangar steak. I think Apiary would be a hipper scene than Jane, but there are probably better restaurants out there.

I had an delicious chicken korma at Bombay Talkie. And a cocktail to match. I thought it was a pretty nice date spot.

Music Industry Dinners

I second Aspen. Also, anything in the Meatpacking District would be fair game. I'd suggest Merkato 55, Marcus Samuelsson's african/ethiopian restaurant. I went there for brunch once, and the scene was ridiculous. There was a DJ, fashionista types, and dancing. There may have been glowsticks involved. I was just trying to eat my eggs benedict (which were very good). But, i digress. I think dinner would a bettter bet. Also, the interior is dark and sexy, always good for the music industry crowd (i'm an ex-label girl myself).

Rocking Horse Cafe, for upscale Southwestern / Mexican...it's on 8th Ave at 19th St. Bombay Talkie, indian, on 9th Ave and 20th st. Or that new basque restaurant Txikito on 25th & 9th ave. Blossom, Trestle on 10th....

Any cool restaurants for teens in NYC?

Ooh, very cool! I agree with Cafeteria, or how about Coffee Shop in Union Square? Also, Rosa Mexicano on 18th St. is a fun Mexican spot.

fun bday dinner for 2 - $100

Thanks, Bar Carerra looks great! I never realized that it was the place next to bar veloce. I'm having my birthday dinner w/ my mom, and bar carerra seems like a better date spot, so i decided to try out Apiary. We'll see. Thanks for the tip.

fun bday dinner for 2 - $100

Greetings,

I am turning 28 this saturday & i'm looking for a somewhat fun (but not too loud & crazy) restaurant for a birthday dinner for two. Our budget is $100-125...I was thinking Apiary (never been...is it good?), or maybe Euzkadi or Esperanto type place. New American, latin, bistro, pan asian, all sound good. We're starting our night with cocktails at Flatiron Lounge, so something below 23rd St is ideal.

thanks in advance!

Best bagels in Manhattan?

The thing i don't like about Tal bagels is that they won't toast them! I just want to have the option.

Brooklyn Bagel on 25th & 8th Avenue without a doubt! They are big & fluffy & water boiled. Just had one this morning :)

places to get international brunch

Public for sure! It has my favorite - "Turkish eggs – two poached eggs on Greek yogurt with kirmizi biber butter" for only $8.00!! And Quinoa hashbrowns. It's a great industrial space & cool crowd. Although the wait can be long, they do have complimentary coffee.

Paprika on St Marks Place near 1st ave. Nice atmosphere, good wine, tasty italian food. Could be romantic, or just casual. Also, fun neighborhood.

Or Esperanto on 7th & Ave C, then head over to Louis 649 or Rue B for drinks.

restaurant with "industrial" decor?

hi there,

my mom is a design junkie and loves going to restaurants with cool interiors. She's a big fan of minimal (Perry St, etc) , but also likes industrial spaces (she loved PUBLIC). I've been tasked with finding a cool restaurant with hip decor. Food is secondary. Any suggestions? Any cuisine except indian & thai....also open to restaurants in bklyn.

thanks in advance!

wine of the month club, or wine related gift?

Hi,

My Dad's 60th B-day is coming up & he's a big wine fan. I was thinking it might be nice give him something wine related. Maybe do a Wine of The Month Club....can anyone suggested a good club of this sort (that also ships to NYC). Or any other wine ideas that would be nice as a 60th birthday present.

Thanks in advance!

restaurants w/ sleek modern minimal decor

Thanks for all the suggestions! We actually went to Lever House a few years ago for her birthday! I remember being impressed with the design.

I made a reservation at Perry St for 7pm (hopefully we can enjoy some natural light before sunset). A Voce looked really nice as well...maybe next year :)
