takeout coffee in Jackson heights
And i just wrote to Starbucks asking for even a general opening date, and they wrote back with a cryptic "due to various construction laws we cannot approximate any store opening dates."
It was a total non-answer.
FH Trader Joe's---Oct. 26th Opening Day !!!
Would the general concensus be that the M53 bus is the most convenient way to get to TJ's from Jackson Heights (74/Roosevelt stop)?
Thinking that with 4 or 5 bags of groceries, a straight bus ride would be easier than a subway/bus transfer.
Also, what is the name of the TJs stop on the bus, and approx. how long can I expect to be on the bus before hitting the bell/signal?
Thanks!
market watch: Jackson Heights
seneca - I was just thinking the same thing. When i started going to Trade Fair a couple of months ago, I was thrilled with their selection of organic produce. For the last few weeks they've been carrying very limited products, and I was going to bring it up to a manager. If they decide not to stock those things that I was buying, I'll go to The Met instead. Shame.
Wine shop in Jackson Heights?
I think there's a decent-sized segment of JH that is ready for more upscale places - as evidenced by this and other threads.
I certainly am. It seems as though the owners of Espresso 77 are.
I think it'll happen - just not immediately - perhaps over the next 5 years.
I think it's also a question of owning vs. renting. As a co-op owner, I'm ready for gentrification and for real estate prices to increase. Were I renting, I'd probably be singing a different tune.
And i didn't know that Espresso 77 only had 4 tables. In that case, I welcome Starbucks more wholeheartedly than ever! Hopefully both can thrive.
Wine shop in Jackson Heights?
Is there a subway that goes to this new mall? I don't know Queens too well.
If there's also an Amish Market, that's a huge plus and worth the trip.
bread in Jackson Heights
Trade Fair carries a couple types of organic breads that i like - I'm kind of a health nut though.
If that's what you're looking for, they have The Baker bread (various types of organic breads) and one right by it - the name is escaping me - but it's a high-fiber, low-glycemic index (i.e bad carbs) bread.
They are both located in the back of the store by the frozen foods.
I would think that Carollo Bakery would have decent, freshly baked baguettes and such.
Where to Find Taralli in Jackson Heights?
Hehe i did try Carollo's. I've given up on finding this in JH.
I'll just order online or get in Manhattan/Astoria.
(I'm really particular about the taralli being cooked with olive oil - many places use corn oil.)
Where to Find Taralli in Jackson Heights?
Thanks both. Sadly, I tried both Trade Fair and Italian Farms with no luck. The woman in Italian Farms had no idea what I was even talking about (don't know if anyone that works there is actually Italian.)
I found a couple of online places to order, so that looks like the best option for me.

Where to Find Taralli in Jackson Heights?
Does anybody know of an Italian pastry shop/grocer that sells taralli - savory "crackers" baked with olive oil that are rolled out and shaped into rings?
Preferably in Jackson Heights...
Thanks!
Wine shop in Jackson Heights?
Lowery's does have a good selection of wines (Parker Station Pinot Noir, good selection of French) but I've also gotten bottles from there that were spoiled.
I'll continue ordering online or schlepping from Trader Joe's (a wine shop in the Queens location would be so awesome!)
With the new espresso bar opening, we're crying out for a chic wine shop.
Wine shop in Jackson Heights?
I actually posted the exact same thing a while back. I recently moved to JH, and there is absolutely not one single specialty wine shop.
The liquor stores are really overpriced (with the exception of the one right by the 74th St subway stop), and so many of the wine bottles are covered in dust. I won't buy wine from them as there's probably a good chance you'll open it to find it spoiled.
I get my wine in Manhattan.
Fresh Pasta
Fresh pasta is a world apart from dried (I won't even make dried pasta).
When Trader Joe's opens, they have good fresh pasta pretty cheap.
I don't know of any Italian groceries that have homemeade pasta.
Trader Joe's Coming to Queens
I don't know Queens too well and just moved to Jackson Heights.
Does anyone know the closest subway to the new TJ's? Or, the best way to get there?
Trade Fair Supermarkets - Best Items?
Oh, I didn't know they had Fage- so good to know.
Those shelves are a bit overwhelming - they are stocked so fully - so these recs are great.
Trade Fair Supermarkets - Best Items?
Just moved to Jackson Heights, and i LOVE Trade Fair.
At first, I was a bit put off by the look of the place - kinda dark and dingy (I shop at Whole Foods a lot so I'm used to bright and airy).
I have to say, walking throught the vegetable aisle, I was so happily shocked to see the amount of organic produce they carry.
Then, I got a bottle of Turkish olive oil that was on sale for $4.99. Got home and tasted it - it exploded with flavour. Most grocery stores charge 3X the price for only average-tasting olive oil.
So, for those who shop there regularly, what are the "secret finds" or the best items they carry, that you'd recommend?
what will make me move to Astoria
I've just discovered Trade Fair, and it is amazing! The quality of goods for the low price is unbeatable.
I am a frequent traveller to Italy among other places, so olive oil is something i'm very particular about. I just got an insanely flavourful bottle from Trade Fair for $4.99. Most grocery stores charge more than that for cheap, mass-produced, flavourless oil.
As far as dining, I really love Cup. It's a stylish diner-type place with a big space and a big menu. The food is always good. Brunch is great.
How happy am I to NEVER set foot in another dingy, dirty, Gristede's again?
Good wine/liquor shop(s) in Jackson Heights?
Thanks Mike. I'll check out the one on 84th.
Seems silly that I'd get rock-bottom prices on wine in Manhattan.
Good wine/liquor shop(s) in Jackson Heights?
Hi All -
Walking through my new neighborhood of Jackson Heights, I have only seen some small, cluttered wine/liquor shops. They are often dusty and dank as well. Not an enjoyable shopping experience.
This is around 37th Ave in the 70s.
I went in to a couple, and found that the wine was offensively overpriced (pretty much double the cost for the ones that I recognized).
I normally stock up on wines at Trader Joe's in Union Square, and sometimes Warehouse Wines on B'way and 8th Street.
Does anyone know of a good shop with a good selection of wines and spirits, with good prices?
Doesn't have to be IN Jackson Heights, as long as it's somewhat close by.
Otherwise, I'll continue to shop in Manhattan.
